No, We Don\u2019t Want Women to Have the Same Rights as Guns<\/a><\/p>\n

Nearly every time the pro-life movement achieves a significant legislative or judicial victory, progressives create either memes or protest signs riffing on conservatives\u2019 commitment to gun rights. These takes were out in full force after the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in\u00a0Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health<\/i>, both because of the magnitude of that ruling and because the previous day, in\u00a0New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen<\/i>, the Court\u00a0struck down<\/a> a New York law that required individuals to demonstrate a need to carry guns outside the home.<\/p>\n

Leftists on Twitter said they\u00a0wished<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cwomen in America had the same rights as a gun.\u201d They must have tweeted these wishes in fits of passion without really thinking about them, because putting women on the same legal footing as guns would be pretty sexist. If Democrats had their way in\u00a0Bruen<\/i>, women would have to demonstrate to the government a need to leave their homes. Here\u2019s what else would happen if we were to treat women like guns:<\/p>\n

Men would need a permit to bring women outside the home.\u00a0<\/em>While\u00a0Bruen\u00a0<\/i>made it unconstitutional for the government to require people to demonstrate a need to carry guns beyond their doorstep, most states in the union require gun-owners to possess concealed-carry permits. The requirements for these permits\u00a0vary<\/a>\u00a0from state to state, but most require applicants to be a minimum age (usually 18 or 21) and take a class on firearm safety.\u00a0Putting such regulations on women going beyond their doorstep would seem more fitting for a country like Afghanistan than for the United States.<\/p>\n

Women would not be allowed to attend school<\/em>.\u00a0We often hear about gun-free zones after school shootings.\u00a0The\u00a0Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990<\/a>\u00a0criminalizes the possession or discharge of a firearm in a school zone.\u00a0If we were to treat women like guns, K\u201312 schools would become \u201cwoman-free zones.\u201d\u00a0Similarly there are many college campuses that do not allow students to carry on campus.\u00a0There were times in our country\u2019s history when men and women were not allowed to attend school together, and those were not good times. Progressives describe the decision in\u00a0Dobbs\u00a0<\/i>as \u201cgoing backwards,\u201d but that would be more apt if we treated women the same as guns.<\/p>\n

Women could be bought and sold.\u00a0<\/em>If we are worried about objectifying women, calling to give them the same rights as literal objects is not helpful.<\/p>\n

In short, this idea that \u201cwomen should have the same rights as guns\u201d would be more like\u00a0The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/i>\u00a0than any pro-abortion caricature of pro-life legislation ever imagined. Our political slogans are not meant to be the height of discourse, but we should expect them to be minimally coherent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
