Critics are calling the step \u201cgreenwashing\u201d and say it could threaten the bloc\u2019s bid to become climate-neutral by 2050.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One good way to know someone is trustworthy is that they tell you how trustworthy (credible) they are.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>In a proposal presented this Wednesday, the EU Commission stated that certain strings remained attached. For example, gas plants could only be considered green if the facility switched to low-carbon or renewable gases, such as biomass or hydrogen produced with renewable energy,\u00a0by 2035.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/fact-check-is-nuclear-energy-good-for-the-climate\/a-59853315\">Nuclear power plants<\/a>\u00a0would be deemed green if the sites can manage to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-the-real-cost-of-nuclear-energy-for-humans-and-the-planet\/a-60390384\">safely dispose of radioactive waste.<\/a>\u00a0So far, worldwide, no permanent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-to-shut-controversial-gorleben-nuclear-waste-facility\/a-59211763\">disposal site<\/a>, has gone into operation though.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference in Brussels, Mairead McGuinness, the EU commissioner responsible for financial services, said her institution was\u00a0<strong>not guilty of \u201cgreenwashing<\/strong>,\u201d as gas and nuclear were labeled as \u201ctransitional\u201d energy sources in the taxonomy. \u201c<strong>Our credibility is still strong,<\/strong>\u201d McGuinness added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not everyone was happy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Environmental organizations most certainly see this critically, saying the proposal could jeopardize the EU\u2019s aim to reach climate neutrality by 2050. The Climate Action Network Europe wrote that the EU Commission \u201csacrifices the scientific integrity of the taxonomy on the altar of fossil gas and nuclear lobbies\u201d and failed to \u201creorient financial flows towards genuinely climate-positive investments.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/european-commission-declares-nuclear-and-gas-to-be-green\/a-60614990#:~:text=European%20Commission%20declares%20nuclear%20and%20gas%20to%20be,the%20bloc%27s%20bid%20to%20become%20climate-neutral%20by%202050.\">It\u2019s a comprehensive article and well worth a read.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>What happens\u00a0next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The European Commission\u2019s taxonomy proposal will now be reviewed by the 27 EU member states and by the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>As the EU\u2019s executive opted for a delegated act, a type of fast-track legislative procedure, only a total of 20 EU countries, or a majority of EU lawmakers at the European Parliament,\u00a0would be able to reject it.<\/p>\n<p>While EU states are not likely to turn down the taxonomy, a win in the European Parliament is not yet certain. Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum have expressed anger over the inclusion of fossil gas and nuclear power in the EU taxonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Green lawmaker Rasmus Andresen said he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d by the proposal, adding that the Green parliamentary fraction would fight hard to gather a majority against the taxonomy.<\/p>\n<p>German Social Democrat Joachim Schuster told DW he thought it possible that the European\u00a0Parliament could vote against the act.<\/p>\n<p>And even if lawmakers were to support\u00a0it, there is another threat looming:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/austria-luxembourg-eye-legal-steps-in-eu-nuclear-energy-row\/a-60515621\">Austria and Luxembourg have already threatened to sue<\/a>\u00a0 the European Commission over the taxonomy rules.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s amazing what the prospect for a winter with little to no heat will do European Commission Declares Nuclear and Gas to be Green.
