Man fatally shot while trying to break into York County home<\/a><\/p>\n

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) \u2014 The York Poquoson Sheriff\u2019s Office says a homeowner fatally shot a man who tried to kick down the door to a home in York County on Monday.<\/p>\n

The call for the shooting came in just after 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Corvette Drive. The neighborhood is near Queens Lake Middle School.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is very abnormal for this neighborhood,\u201d said York Poquoson Sheriff\u2019s Major Ron Montgomery. \u201cIt\u2019s a quiet neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an update Tuesday, the sheriff\u2019s office says the man, identified as 20-year-old Antonio Beltran Flores Perez, had jumped a gate and tried to forcibly enter the home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family had spotted the individual coming out of the woods behind the home and the family had gone inside the home and this person came onto the deck and began kicking the door,\u201d said Major Ron Montgomery.<\/p>\n

The homeowner said he and his family were outside at the time and went inside and locked the door. Perez then tried to kick the door, the sheriff\u2019s office says.<\/p>\n

Major Montgomery says Perez, who tried to break into the home, didn\u2019t have a weapon, but tried multiple times to get inside. They say Perez\u2019s body was found on the back deck. Major Montgomery says the homeowner\u2019s concern was trying to protect his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was his big concern,\u201d said Major Montgomery. \u201cThe door had been locked and when he started kicking the door to make entry into the house, that\u2019s when the homeowner shot the individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Major Montgomery says even though York County has a fairly low crime rate, that doesn\u2019t mean people living there are immune to these types of crimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have someone who\u2019s trespassing on your property that you\u2019re concerned about, I would encourage you to dial 911 immediately,\u201d said Major Montgomery. \u201cNationally, we are seeing a lot more handgun violence and a lot more of these situations where burglaries or larcenies are occurring, so I think nationally that is a trend and what we\u2019ve learned here in York County, although we have a very low crime rate, that doesn\u2019t mean we are going to be immune from these types of crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right now, investigators say no one has been charged in this case.<\/p>\n
