\u2018He just looked like he was possessed<\/a>\u2019<\/p>\n

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A homeowner who shot a man he says broke into his home spoke exclusively with Action News Jax Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just looked like he was possessed, and he was acting like he was possessed,\u201d William Kerr recalled.<\/p>\n

Kerr says the man broke into his house Wednesday morning, threatened him, and stole $400 dollars.<\/p>\n

The homeowner was not arrested.<\/p>\n

Kerr\u2019s wife was leaving for an appointment when Kerr says he went into his office.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got the door open about a foot, and I see this guy standing there. He\u2019s got my rifle\u2026 BB rifle \u2013 he\u2019s standing there with the rifle like this, the butt facing me, and he\u2019s fixing to clock me \u2026 I quick-slammed the door, and I heard him messing with the other door in the room. So, I\u2019m thinking, \u2018oh, man, Tina\u2019s out there in the car fixing to go.\u2019 So, I ran through the kitchen, grabbed me a cleaver, and went out the door. By the time I went out the door, he\u2019s already at the mailbox.\u201d<\/p>\n

Worried for his neighbors, Kerr says he followed the man down the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a next-door neighbor with a little kid; the lady across the street is kind of elderly,\u201d Kerr said.<\/p>\n

At that point, the police were there. Kerr recalled pointing them in the man\u2019s direction. Kerr then figured he\u2019d continue down the road to make sure the man wouldn\u2019t hurt anyone, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a privacy fence in that lot. Well, I drive down a little bit, and I see him, and he\u2019s broken off a piece of this privacy fence \u2026’ Come on out \u2026 the police officers are driving up the street, they\u2019ll be here in just a second,\u2019\u201d Kerr recalled saying. \u201cWhen he gets up \u2013 he has this big stick \u2013 it\u2019s probably three or four inches around and about three feet long. And he wields the stick, well I jump back \u2026 I had my gun, I tried to shoot him in his hands to get the stick out of his hands. About that time a police officer drives down the street, and I wave him down, I\u2019m like, \u2018he\u2019s right here!\u2019 And he tried to run, still.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another neighbor who saw the man before he entered Kerr\u2019s house also called 911. That neighbor gave Action News Jax a video of the man walking up his dock, naked and muddy. He told Action News Jax he\u2019d given the man a pair of shorts, water, and food before calling 911. But he said the man took off, heading toward Kerr\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was jacked up on something. He was dirty as heck,\u201d Kerr said. \u201cThe time he tried to ram me in there he was going, \u2018wooo! Wooo!\u2019 And even when he was swinging the stick, he was like \u2018wooo!\u2019 And his eyes were like golf balls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police questioned Kerr on Wednesday and later released him that evening. Kerr says he claimed self-defense.<\/p>\n

Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson talked about whether the homeowner might face charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are in imminent fear of death or great bodily harm, you can probably defend yourself and claim self-defense,\u201d Carson said.<\/p>\n

Carson says a self-defense argument can be difficult to prove.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy advice would be, don\u2019t follow people out of your house. Call law enforcement, and allow them to manage it. Because if you get involved there\u2019s a possibility that you could ultimately be charged with manslaughter or even murder,\u201d Carson added.<\/p>\n

Kerr says he wishes the man would\u2019ve just asked for help, saying he would\u2019ve gladly given him the $400 dollars that he stole. Kerr says he hopes the man gets the help he needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope the best for him. I don\u2019t hope anything bad,\u201d Kerr said. \u201cIt was a traumatic situation on both our part.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, investigators said the man Kerr shot was in surgery. Action News Jax is still working to learn the man\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
