That\u2019s always a good idea. If you aren\u2019t already familiar with them,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-four-rules-of-gun-safety-for-beginners-and-everyone-else\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here are the four rules of gun safety<\/a>\u00a0that every gun\u00a0owner should know and practice.<\/p>\n<p>But we all know that groups like Giffords aren\u2019t really concerned about actual firearm safety as much as as they are control those who own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=ale&amp;ti=11093&amp;pri=21153&amp;pw=275597&amp;mi=16393&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.guns.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc\">guns<\/a>. They\u2019re not trying to change our minds here. They want the general public \u2014 the majority who don\u2019t know much about the issues surrounding firearms and gun\u00a0rights \u2014 to rethink what \u201csafety\u201d is. Instead of being about the practices an individual should adopt for basic firearm safety, they want people to think that \u201cgun\u00a0safety\u201d comes from the imposition of \u201ccommonsense\u201d gun\u00a0control laws.<\/p>\n<p>They want John and Jane Q. Public to think that gun\u00a0owners don\u2019t give a damn about safety, when precisely the opposite is the truth. We all started out dumb about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=ale&amp;ti=11093&amp;pri=21153&amp;pw=275597&amp;mi=16393&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.guns.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc\">guns<\/a>\u00a0at some point and were corrected by a parent, an instructor, a range safety officer, or a mentor. Some of us have had worse experiences that woke us up. But the general public hasn\u2019t had that experience. They don\u2019t know (and don\u2019t want others to know) how seriously safety is taken as a normal part of the gun\u00a0culture.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why a lack of basic, fundamental gun\u00a0safety practices isn\u2019t tolerated in the gun-owning community.<\/p>\n<p>To spread that message even further, we need to be reminding people of three things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What actual gun\u00a0safety really is<\/li>\n<li>That we take it seriously<\/li>\n<li>That passing laws can\u2019t make bad owners or criminals into good ones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What Real Gun Safety Is<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Real gun\u00a0safety doesn\u2019t come from collective action. It doesn\u2019t come from laws. It doesn\u2019t come from firearms design (assuming the design isn\u2019t seriously defective). It doesn\u2019t come from your gun\u00a0shop, or even from a firearms instructor. Ultimately, gun\u00a0safety lies in the hands of the individual holding a gun. While the exact wording differs, the Four Rules cover things really well . . .<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Four Rules of Gun Safety&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.thetruthaboutguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/four-rules.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you take any basic class given by a reputable instructor, you will start off with gun\u00a0safety before ever going to the range. Beyond what\u2019s contained in the Four Rules (or the NRA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsafetyrules.nra.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 rules<\/a>, if that\u2019s what you learned), there are other safety considerations to know including . . . .<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The gun\u00a0needs to be safe to operate<\/li>\n<li>You need to know how to use it safely<\/li>\n<li>Use the correct ammo<\/li>\n<li>Wear eye and ear protection<\/li>\n<li>Never use alcohol or drugs while shooting<\/li>\n<li>Keep\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=ale&amp;ti=11093&amp;pri=21153&amp;pw=275597&amp;mi=16393&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.guns.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc\">guns<\/a>\u00a0away from unauthorized people (children, thieves, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Range safety procedures and rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a community, we take these rules seriously. To be told by gun\u00a0control advocacy operations \u2014 of all people \u2014 that<em>\u00a0they\u2019re<\/em>\u00a0the ones who really care about firearm safety is not only false, it\u2019s downright insulting.
