Biden Issues ‘Highly Unusual’ Warning at Dem Fundraiser<\/a><\/p>\n

President Biden on Thursday said the risk of nuclear \u201cArmageddon\u201d was at its highest level since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962\u2014a warning The New York Times is calling \u201chighly unusual for any American president.\u201d Speaking at a fundraiser in New York City for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the president admitted he didn\u2019t know \u201cPutin\u2019s off ramp.\u201d\u201cWhere does he find a way out? Where does he find himself where he does not only lose face but significant power?\u201d Biden openly questioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” the president said.<\/p>\n

Biden, claiming to know Russian President Vladimir Putin \u201cfairly well,\u201d argued the leader is serious when he speaks about using \u201ctactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.\u201d Resorting to these weapons shows his military is \u201csignificantly underperforming,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In an angry and fiery speech last week, Mr. Putin raised the specter of using nuclear weapons to hold on to his territorial gains, which Ukraine\u2019s powerful counteroffensives have begun to erode. Mr. Putin said he would use \u201call available means\u201d to defend Russian territory \u2014 which he has declared now includes\u00a0four provinces of eastern Ukraine that Russia illegally annexed<\/a>\u00a0in recent days.<\/p>\n

The atomic bombs the United States dropped on Japan in 1945, Mr. Putin said in that speech, had \u201ccreated a precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks and others by top Russian leaders represent the first time since 1962 that Moscow officials have made explicit nuclear threats.<\/p>\n

Officials in Washington have been gaming out scenarios in which Mr. Putin might decide to use a tactical nuclear weapon to make up for the failings of Russian troops in Ukraine. In late February, Mr. Putin\u00a0called for his nuclear forces to go on alert<\/a>, but there has been no evidence that they did so. (NYT<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday the U.S. hasn’t seen a reason yet to adjust its nuclear posture as there’s been no sign that Russia is imminently planning to use nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Critics ripped the president, arguing his policies helped get to this point.<\/p>\n
