3 Months After Bruen Ruling, Antis Still Trying to Dance Around Constitution<\/a><\/p>\n

More than three months after the landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down New York\u2019s unconstitutional, and century-old gun permit \u201cgood cause\u201d scheme, anti-gunners continue trying to get around the Second Amendment, while the media seem content to help the whining.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0CNN<\/a>, since the June 23 smackdown of New York\u2019s carry permit law in\u00a0New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen<\/em>, \u201cscores of new lawsuits have been filed against gun restrictions at the federal, state and local levels.\u201d The cable news network report also noted, \u201cThis shift in burden has put gun rights groups at a greater advantage in court. It has also changed the type of work that government defenders \u2013 and the outside gun safety groups that often support them in litigation \u2013 must do to advocate for their laws.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday, anti-gun New York State Attorney General Letitia James\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0she will fight a federal court ruling from last week that declared some tenets of the state\u2019s new law\u2014hastily adopted just days after the high court ruling\u2014were unconstitutional. Speaking defiantly, James said her office had \u201cfiled a motion to keep the entire\u00a0Concealed Carry Improvement Act in effect and continue to protect communities as the appeals process moves forward.\u00a0This common-sense gun control legislation is critical in our state\u2019s effort to reduce gun violence. We will continue to fight for the safety of everyday New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a prepared statement, James\u2019 office said the new law \u201cstrengthens requirements for concealed carry permits, prohibits guns in\u00a0sensitive\u00a0places, requires individuals with concealed carry permits to request a property owner\u2019s consent to carry on their premises, enhances safe storage requirements, requires social media review ahead of certain gun purchases, and requires background checks on all ammunition purchases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics complain the new statute is as bad, if not worse, than the original law.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/a>said ruling by District Judge Glenn Suddaby \u201cdealt a sharp blow to New York, which had sought to provide a model for new gun legislation for the five other states whose laws were invalidated by the Supreme Court\u2019s June ruling \u2014 in part by outlining how those \u2018sensitive places,\u2019 where the court said it was permissible for states to bar guns, can be defined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramping up the rhetoric, anti-gun New York City Mayor Eric Adams\u00a0announced Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0he was designating Times Square as a \u201cgun free zone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Times story quoted Judge Suddaby, who called the \u201cgood moral character\u201d requirement of the new law \u201cfatally flawed.\u201d He also said the demand for access to someone\u2019s social media accounts for the previous three years would not pass muster.<\/p>\n
