Russian-installed authorities order evacuation of Kherson in face of Ukrainian counteroffensive.<\/a><\/p>\n

R<\/span>ussian-installed authorities in the occupied city of\u00a0Kherson<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday urged residents to leave immediately in the face of a looming counteroffensive by\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>\u2019s armed forces whose aim was to recapture the southern city.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the tense situation at the front, the increased danger of massive shelling of the city and the threat of terrorist attacks, all civilians must immediately leave the city,\u201d a statement on the\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0administration\u2019s Telegram channel said Saturday.<\/p>\n

Urging people to board boats across the Dnieper River, Russia also said in the statement that all departments and ministries of the Kremlin-installed administration should also leave the southern city, which has been in the hands of Russian forces since they invaded Ukraine in February.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian forces bombarded Russian positions and targeted supply routes across the province on Friday, inching closer to a full assault on the only provincial capital that has remained in Russian hands throughout the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

The order came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces had planted explosives inside the huge\u00a0Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River, which holds back an enormous reservoir.<\/p>\n

In a late-night television address he said Moscow was planning to blow up the dam and that \u201cwould mean a large-scale disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia has accused Kyiv of firing rockets at the dam. Neither side produced evidence to back up their allegations.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy’s comments came before more than 1 million people woke up without power Saturday, after a wave of Russian strikes pounded critical infrastructure in several cities across the country, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a deputy head of the Ukrainian president\u2019s office, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Power outages were reported in regions around Kyiv\u00a0<\/a>by Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksii Arestovych, who said on Twitter that communication networks in the capital had been hit by Russian missiles. He said that five had been shot down by his country’s forces.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Infrastructure in the southern city of\u00a0Odesa<\/a>\u00a0had also been hit, he said.<\/p>\n

NBC News could not independently verify these claims, but officials in the western cities of Lviv, Khmelnytskiy, Volyn and Rivne also reported attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result of the strikes, there is no power supply in part of the Rivne district,\u201d Vitaly Koval, the governor of Rivne, said on his Telegram channel, adding that electrical substations had been damaged. He said the attacks produced no casualties.<\/p>\n

His comments were echoed by Ihor Polishchuk, the mayor of Lutsk, who said in a post on his Facebook page that part of the city had lost its electricity supply.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere,\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2018s Foreign Ministry said it condemned a call by France, Germany and Britain for the United Nations to investigate allegations that Russia has used\u00a0Iranian-made drones<\/a> to attack Ukraine, according to the Iranian state-run news agency, IRNA.<\/p>\n

In a letter signed by their U.N. envoys, the three European countries backed Ukraine\u2019s call on Monday for a U.N. investigation, arguing the use of\u00a0Shahed-136\u00a0attack drones,\u00a0<\/a>known as kamikaze drones, breached the terms of the\u00a02015 Iran nuclear deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The White House said Thursday it had evidence that\u00a0Iran had sent military officers<\/a>\u00a0to Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine to help Moscow\u00a0launch drone attacks\u00a0on targets across the country.<\/p>\n

Iran sent trainers and technical support to enable Russian forces to use\u00a0Iranian-made drones\u00a0\u201cwith better lethality,\u201d John Kirby, White House National Security Council spokesperson, told reporters.<\/p>\n
