And while \u201cdemocracy\u201d was once just a transparently silly euphemism for \u201cstuff we want,\u201d it has since evolved into a rhetorical device that denotes a decisively illiberal mindset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/25\/democrats-the-only-way-to-save-democracy-is-one-party-rule\/\"><del>DEMOCRATS <\/del>Demoncraps: The Only Way To Save Democracy Is One-Party Rule<\/a>.<br \/>\n<em>\u2018Save Our Democracy\u2019 is the new \u2018Russia Collusion.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At this point, it would save everyone time if Democrats could simply point to a policy agenda item that isn\u2019t going to save democracy \u2014 if such a thing exists.<\/p>\n<p>If Republicans vote, they are killing democracy. If they don\u2019t vote, they are killing democracy. The only way to \u201csave democracy,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maxboot\/status\/1524345353545388032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes<\/a>\u00a0The Washington Post\u2019s Max Boot, is to empower one-party rule \u2014 a position that probably sounds counterintuitive to anyone with a middle-school education. \u201cNow you need to vote to literally save democracy again,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/watch-biden-calls-for-democrats-to-vote-in-midterm-elections-slams-semi-fascism-in-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contends<\/a>\u00a0President Joe Biden, or we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/10\/24\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-a-democratic-national-committee-event-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will<\/a> lose our \u201cfundamental rights and freedoms like the right to choose, the right to privacy, the right to vote \u2014 our very democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chilling stuff. But it doesn\u2019t end there. You will remember that by failing to \u201creform\u201d the filibuster, which would entail authorizing the thinnest of fleeting majorities to shove through massive generational \u201creforms\u201d without any national consensus or debate, we are also killing democracy. This has been the position not only of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/04\/02\/kill-senate-filibuster-save-american-democracy-column\/7060951002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left-wing pundits<\/a>\u00a0and the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/11\/opinion\/us-filibuster-senate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editorial board<\/a>, but also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.klobuchar.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2021\/3\/for-the-people-act-is-one-reason-we-must-eliminate-the-filibuster-amy-klobuchar-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">senators<\/a>\u00a0tasked with defending their institution. I wonder if they will support this democracy-saving fix next session, as well?<\/p>\n<p>Then again, if we don\u2019t nationalize the economy to avert a climate crisis, we are also killing democracy. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to save democracy in order to save our species,\u201d Jamie Raskin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/apr\/18\/jamie-raskin-climate-crisis-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explains<\/a>. And if we don\u2019t empty the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to temporarily keep gas prices low to help Democrats win in 2022, we are killing democracy. \u201cWe find ourselves in a situation, where keeping gas prices low is key to preserving and strengthening the future of our democracy,\u201d MSNBC\u2019s Chris Hayes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allinwithchris\/status\/1582887592277991425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We must allow the president to unilaterally create trillion-dollar spending bills and break existing private sector contracts by fiat. For democracy. We must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/21\/opinions\/court-packing-will-save-democracy-w-kamau-bell\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pack the court<\/a>\u00a0to \u201csave democracy.\u201d We must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/05\/18\/disinformation-board-dhs-nina-jankowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">create<\/a>\u00a0a Ministry of Truth to help with \u201cstrengthening democratic institutions.\u201d We must vote for a Pennsylvania candidate who can\u2019t cobble two consecutive coherent sentences together because the \u201cfate of our democracy\u201d is at stake,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnfetterman\/status\/1583504501826523137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0our former president.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t support a partisan congressional investigation that\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/28\/jan-6-house-committee-misinformation-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circumvented<\/a> basic due process norms, you probably hate democracy. If you aren\u2019t self-flagellating and holding yourself accountable for the actions of Jan. 6 rioters, you are also bolstering the coming autocracy.<\/p>\n<p>If the Supreme Court empowers the public to vote on an issue like abortion, unmentioned anywhere in the Constitution, it is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2022\/06\/27\/alito-dobbs-decision-states-rghts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">degrading<\/a>\u201d our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-05-05\/abortion-rights-falter-as-democracy-slides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">democracy<\/a>.\u201d If the court protects rights that are explicitly mentioned in the Constitution from the vagaries of the political process, it\u00a0 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/guns-and-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also<\/a>\u00a0undermining democracy. Which is convenient.<\/p>\n<p>The only way to save democracy is to allow one party (guess which one?) to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/03\/pelosis-h-r-1-is-an-authoritarian-outrage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federalize elections<\/a>, so they can compel states to count mail-in votes that arrive 10 days late, legalize ballot harvesting, force the overturning of dozens of existing voter ID laws, allow felons to vote, create onerous burdens to chill speech, and empower bureaucrats to redraw congressional districts. Otherwise \u2026 well, you know.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll remember last year, when left-wingers were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/mike-pence-vote-suppression-trump-riot-authoritarianism.html?utm_source=tw&amp;utm_campaign=nym&amp;utm_medium=s1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arguing<\/a>\u00a0that Mike Pence\u2019s support for basic voting ID \u2014 backed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/194741\/four-five-americans-support-voter-laws-early-voting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around<\/a>\u00a080 percent of the American public and implemented in virtually every free nation \u2014 heralded a \u201cPermanent Authoritarian Rule.\u201d The president\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/07\/joe-bidens-shameful-voting-rights-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0Georgia\u2019s moderate voter law, \u201codious,\u201d \u201cpernicious,\u201d \u201cvicious,\u201d \u201cunconscionable,\u201d a \u201csubversion\u201d and \u201csuppression,\u201d the \u201c21st-century Jim Crow\u201d and the sure sign of an emerging \u201cautocracy.\u201d In 2022 early voting in Georgia is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/georgia-early-voting-numbers-record-first-week-midterm-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shattering records<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, of course, there are the nefarious \u201celection deniers.\u201d You know, \u201cThe Big Lie?\u201d If Democrats believed \u201celection denial\u201d was an existential threat to American \u201cdemocracy,\u201d they probably wouldn\u2019t be perennially <a href=\"https:\/\/gop.com\/video\/12-minutes-of-democrats-denying-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engaging<\/a>\u00a0in it. The American left hasn\u2019t accepted the legitimacy of a Republican presidential election win since 1988. Democrats \u201csave democracy\u201d by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/12\/democrats-interfere-republican-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pumping<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/25\/us\/politics\/blue-states-midterm-landscape.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions<\/a> into the primary campaigns of \u201celection-denying\u201d Republicans to try and set up a more favorable general election.<\/p>\n<p>Just last night, Hillary Clinton, one of numerous prominent Democrats who wouldn\u2019t accept the legitimacy of the 2016 presidential election, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Breaking911\/status\/1584726498681896961?s=20&amp;t=yfiJx6HoWICcIZgTfC3Z5A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cright-wing extremists already have a plan to literally steal the next presidential election.\u201d This is the kind of preemptive election denialism Democrats have been engaged in for nearly two decades. Democrats don\u2019t lose elections; they are victims of gerrymandering or voter suppression or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niskanencenter.org\/reckoning-with-the-deep-structural-problems-in-our-democracy-with-greg-sargent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">structural<\/a>\u201d problems or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/new-study-shows-russian-propaganda-may-really-have-helped-trump-n1025306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">too much free speech<\/a>\u00a0or Fox News or Russian gremlins.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2016, the Democratic Party descended into the politics of hystericism. It began with a mind-bending tale of a second-rate power stealing our democracy with a few Facebook ads and a Manchurian candidate. The collective psychotic break that followed was bolstered by an unethical political media and a corrupt investigation into the president that was predicated on an opposition-research document filled with fictions, distortions, and Russian disinformation. Democrats wanted to cripple the president. They succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, a large swath of the left has become so reliant on infantile fearmongering, that they seem incapable of debating any issues or dealing with the reality of an opposition party.
