{"id":87627,"date":"2022-11-13T00:23:17","date_gmt":"2022-11-13T06:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=87627"},"modified":"2022-11-13T00:23:17","modified_gmt":"2022-11-13T06:23:17","slug":"87627","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=87627","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/syracuse-students-not-interested-in-mandatory-diversity-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syracuse Students Not Interested or Engaged in Mandatory Diversity Course: Report<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<article><em><strong>Requiring students to talk about \u2018identities\u2019 and \u2018stereotypes\u2019 not a big hit at Syracuse<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Syracuse University students are not interested in a mandatory diversity course, with some criticizing it as too focused on finger pointing and singling out individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Syracuse University structures its First-Year Seminar 101 course around students sharing their experiences with their cultures and identities, students taking the course said nobody wants to speak,\u201d\u00a0<em>The Daily Orange<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyorange.com\/2022\/11\/first-year-seminar-101-students-peer-advisers-criticize-address-difficult-topics\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. \u201cIn some classes, students said they don\u2019t know each other\u2019s names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One student raised concerns that the focus on privilege and identity alienates students.<\/p>\n<p>The campus paper reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First-year finance major Julia Moreno said many of the ways the course attempts to engage experience-based discussion end up having a negative effect. Questions revolving around exploring identities can make students feel singled out, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single question is about you,\u201d Moreno said. \u201c\u2018What are your identities? What are your privileges? What stereotypes do you have in your brain? What do you think about?\u2019 But nobody wants to share that because a lot of it\u2019s really personal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another student questioned why the course, focused on new Syracuse students, does not help them with socializing or \u201cnavigating\u201d the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGita Goldberg, a transfer student and junior communications and rhetorical studies major, said the class doesn\u2019t achieve what she would expect from an introductory course intended for new students,\u201d the paper reported. \u201cShe said FYS has not covered subject matters focused on introducing students to SU and helping them navigate their first semester at university like she expected it would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other universities have struggled to deliver an engaging diversity course. For example, Saint Joseph\u2019s University in Philadelphia had to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/st-joes-ends-up-mandating-diversity-course-which-had-low-student-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandate<\/a>\u00a0its diversity course due to low enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>The faculty senate voted in favor of requiring students to take the course and the university will likely approve that request.
