Will the Left Ever Learn to Wait Before Blaming the Right for a Mass Shooting?<\/a><\/p>\n It\u2019s our thirst to understand \u201cwhy\u201d someone would carry out such a horrific act that drives our curiosity and animates our search for a political villain in these mass shootings.<\/p>\n Answers are always few and very unsatisfying. Trying to ascribe rational, logical thought processes to someone who is mentally ill is an exercise in futility. It doesn\u2019t matter if he leaves a right-wing manifesto railing against blacks and Jews or swears allegiance to Antifa and claims to want to stamp out \u201cfascism.\u201d \u201cPolitics\u201d \u2014 a shooter\u2019s limited understanding of it \u2014 isn\u2019t a catalyst as much as it is a touchstone to a reality of which he or she is only vaguely aware.<\/p>\n The most recent incident led to a familiar pattern. A man walked into a gay club where a drag queen show was underway. Before he was stopped, five people were killed and 18 were wounded. Given the gunman\u2019s \u201ctarget,\u201d it was \u201cnaturally\u201d assumed that the perpetrator was a right-wing fanatic who was driven to this mass slaughter by conservative politicians and online hate sites (like PJ Media).<\/p>\n A\u00a0National Review<\/em>\u00a0editorial<\/a>\u00a0sums up the arguments on the left.<\/p>\n According to the burgeoning conventional wisdom, therefore, the true culprits for the Club Q shooting include\u00a0Libs of Tik Tok<\/a>,\u00a0Tucker Carlson<\/a>,\u00a0Elon Musk\u2019s Twitter content-moderation policies<\/a>, the \u201cright wing moral panic<\/a>\u201d about drag queen story hours, and \u2014 of course \u2014 the entire Republican Party.<\/p>\n Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0attributed<\/a>\u00a0the shooting to the Right\u2019s \u201canti-LGBT+ campaign,\u201d writing: \u201cConnect the dots, @GOP.\u201d Equality Florida press secretary Brandon Wolf\u00a0told MSNBC<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cright wing grifters, including politicians like Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, they\u2019ve been spewing this vile, hateful rhetoric about LGBTQ people . . . and we warned them that inevitably this would result in violence.\u201d<\/p>\n In the\u00a0New York Times,\u00a0<\/em>columnist Michelle Goldberg\u00a0argued<\/a>\u00a0that the shooting \u201cseems hard to separate\u201d from the Right\u2019s \u201cnationwide campaign of anti-L.G.B.T.Q. incitement.\u201d \u201cEach time these things happen, the right-wing go-to is to blame \u2018mental illness,\u2019\u201d Brian Broome\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Washington Post.\u00a0<\/em>But \u201cit\u2019s right-wing rhetoric that sparks these nightmares.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 always looking to fundraise off of a tragedy \u2014 weighed in.<\/p>\n The mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, which saw a 22-year-old man charged with hate crimes and murder on Monday, came after years of intensifying anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, acts of violence and intimidation, and discriminatory legislation from far-right individuals and groups, including powerful Republican politicians.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Anderson Lee Aldrich was not influenced by right-wing \u201chate speech.\u201d He was not \u201canti-LGBTQ\u201d because he was, in fact,\u00a0a \u201cnon-binary\u201d person<\/a>\u00a0who preferred being addressed with the pronouns \u201cthey\/them.\u201d He had been hospitalized several times for mental disorders. But, apparently, Aldrich was influenced and motivated to kill fellow LGBTQ people by right-wing loudmouths?<\/p>\n \u201cWords matter,\u201d Whoopi Goldberg said on\u00a0The View.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cWords matter and people like Lauren Boebert who, you know, has been in the forefront of dissing LGBTQ+ people, is now saying her prayers and thoughts go with the families. Well, they don\u2019t really need your prayers and thoughts. They needed your votes. That\u2019s what they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n What did people need when a Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer\u00a0opened fire<\/a>\u00a0on a number of House Republicans at a practice for the Congressional baseball game, putting House Majority Whip Steve Scalise in the hospital for six weeks? This came just days after Sanders warned on the Senate floor that if the GOP\u2019s healthcare bill passed, \u201cthousands of Americans would die\u201d \u2014 a phrase echoed by most of the Democratic congressional leadership.<\/p>\n In 2017, a Tennessee woman\u00a0attempted<\/a>\u00a0to run a Republican congressman off the road for his support for the GOP\u2019s Obamacare replacement bill. Does violent rhetoric from the left ever matter? Or is it only violent rhetoric from the right?<\/p>\n There have been more than\u00a0100 pro-life churches<\/a>\u00a0attacked since the\u00a0Dobbs<\/em>\u00a0decision last summer. A man was arrested outside of the private home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh admitting he was planning to kill him. Using the left\u2019s rationale to explain the attacks, we have to assume that left-wing rhetoric is to blame.<\/p>\n But that will never happen.
