Cori Bush (MO) wants you to know that Republican Rep. Byron Donalds (FL) does not count as black.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FWIW, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByronDonalds?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ByronDonalds<\/a> is not a historic candidate for Speaker. He is a prop. Despite being Black, he supports a policy agenda intent on upholding and perpetuating white supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>His name being in the mix is not progress\u2014it\u2019s pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cori Bush (@CoriBush) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoriBush\/status\/1610726873792929792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the only interpretation of her comment. Donalds has been nominated to be speaker of the House. Regardless of the circumstances, and regardless of what you think of Donalds\u2019s politics, that\u2019s historic.<\/p>\n<p>At least, this was the rule when Democrats were nominating their first black man or first woman to be president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody ought to celebrate it, Republican or Democrat alike,\u201d Democrat John Kerry\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-clinton-kerry\/kerry-says-all-should-celebrate-clinton-win-regardless-of-party-idUSKCN0YU1U8\">proclaimed<\/a> after Clinton won the nomination. \u201cIt\u2019s a breakthrough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was always a lie, I\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/why-arent-news-media-celebrating-giorgia-meloni-rishi-sunak\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0after Giorgia Meloni and Rishi Sunak got no grand congratulations on their elections in Italy and the United Kingdom, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they said\u00a0<i>we should celebrate racial diversity and historic firsts<\/i>, what they really meant was: \u2018We should celebrate the Left\u2019s wins and come up with excuses to call the Right racist or sexist.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We know for a fact that Democrats and liberals use the charge of racism dishonestly as a cudgel \u2014 as a way to shut up political enemies and increase the cost of opposing them.<\/p>\n<p>Recall how liberals\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/who-cares-call-them-racists-explaining-the-dishonest-attacks-on-legal-scholar-ilya-shapiro\">wrote<\/a> in private emails they expected only their allies to see: \u201cTake one of them &#8230; who cares \u2014 and call them racists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat is necessary,\u201d liberal journalist Spencer Ackerman explained, \u201cis to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwinger\u2019s [face] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Consider the\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/why-coke-went-woke\">story<\/a>\u00a0recently publicized about Coke\u2019s lobbying methods on soda taxes and food stamp restrictions. Coke met with NAACP and other civil rights groups, saying, \u201cWe will give you money. You need to paint opponents of us as racist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But we don\u2019t need to posit dishonesty by Bush here. Let\u2019s grant that she actually means and believes what she\u2019s saying.<\/p>\n<p>This tells us something else. This tells us that when Bush talks about race, she\u2019s not talking about race the way most people do. To her, \u201cblack\u201d isn\u2019t about the color of a person\u2019s skin, it\u2019s not about the experience a person had growing up, and it\u2019s not about a person being descended from slaves or being the victim of discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>To Bush, being black means being a liberal Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>This is an abuse of language, and it\u2019s a particularly pernicious one.<\/p>\n<p>Race carries extraordinary weight in American culture and politics for a good reason. America\u2019s original sin was African slavery. We\u2019ve never recovered from it. We fought a horrendous war over slavery. States and the federal government have institutionalized racism. The legacies of slavery and Jim Crow are visible every day.<\/p>\n<p>African Americans were the victims of these offenses.\u00a0<i>Democrats<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>liberals\u00a0<\/i>were not. By redefining race to mean party, Cori Bush is trying to smuggle the moral weight of America\u2019s racist history into something much more pedestrian \u2014 her own party and her own policy preferences.<\/p>\n<p>This is harmful because it rightly makes neutral observers very skeptical anytime any Democrat speaks about race or racism \u2014 and we need to be able to speak clearly about race and racism. People like Bush make that impossible, and so people like Bush make race relations in America worse \u2014 which means people like Bush make life worse for other African Americans.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just Cori Bush who does this.
