{"id":89882,"date":"2023-02-07T17:51:59","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T23:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=89882"},"modified":"2023-02-07T17:52:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T23:52:25","slug":"89882","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=89882","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/02\/06\/proposed-relaxing-of-wyoming-gun-laws-would-cause-problems-says-new-york-anti-gun-activist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elitist snobs from New York always think the land between the coasts is populated by nothing but hicks and cows<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the Wyoming Legislature considers several bills that would make it easier to carry firearms in public spaces, there\u2019s evidence that those practices make things worse, a gun control advocate said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen things like guns routinely being left in bathrooms on campuses,\u201d Andy Pelosi told Cowboy State Daily.<\/p>\n<p>As executive director of The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus, which is based in New York State, Pelosi was answering what he claims are flawed arguments from Wyoming concealed-carry advocates who have said that the loosening of concealed carry restrictions in other states hasn\u2019t caused problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Causes More Problem Than It Solves?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allowing firearms on college campuses has led to problems and even some tragedies, Pelosi said. That has included more suicides or perpetrators using firearms to force sexual assaults.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepgunsoffcampus.org\/blog\/2019\/05\/15\/incidents-campus-states-allow-campus-carry-2-21-19\/\">He cited some studies\u00a0<\/a>his group has compiled from reports of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepgunsoffcampus.org\/blog\/2017\/05\/01\/concealed-handguns-campus-multi-year-study-julie-gavran-ph-d-western-director\/\">gun-related incidents on campuses<\/a>, including Colorado State University. Concealed carry is allowed at CSU.<\/p>\n<p>It generally isn\u2019t allowed on the University of Wyoming Campus. Students or staff may carry at UW only if they\u2019ve obtained a special permit from university police for some pressing reason, such as being stalked.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the incidents in Colorado that Keep Guns off Campus cites include student gunshot suicides in 2008 and 2017 and an accidental shooting on the CU-Denver campus in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2017 at Fort Collins Community College, \u201cA 26-year-old female student pulled a loaded gun on her professor after he confronted her about cheating,\u201d according to one of the studies cited.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, allowing guns on campuses and other previously gun-free public spaces isn\u2019t shown to diminish crime, but instead increases the number of incidents such as suicides, threats and accidental shootings, Pelosi said.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming opposes allowing concealed carry on campus, the group\u2019s representative, Caitlin Heddins, told legislators during a recent discussion of one of the firearms-related bills.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-wp-embed is-provider-cowboy-state-daily wp-block-embed-cowboy-state-daily\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" title=\"\u201cShowdown Over Guns In State Capitol: \u201cGun-Free Zones Are Soft Zones For Mass Shooters\u201d\u201d \u2014 Cowboy State Daily\" src=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/02\/03\/showdown-over-guns-in-state-capitol-gun-free-zones-are-soft-zones-for-mass-shooters\/embed\/#?secret=27KNLLHfMj#?secret=X2mJuBhyZ1\" width=\"600\" height=\"571\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" data-secret=\"X2mJuBhyZ1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<p><strong>Still A Good Idea, Some Say<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, advocates for the bills \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyoleg.gov\/Legislation\/2023\/HB0105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0House Bill 105<\/a>\u00a0and Senate File 135 \u2013 argue that it violates the Second Amendment rights of Wyoming residents to not allow concealed carry into government buildings, government meetings and the like.<\/p>\n<p>They contend that gun-free zones simply create \u201csoft targets\u201d for mass shooters or others with ill intent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New \u2018Capitol Carry\u2019 Bills\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A pair of new bills introduced to the Wyoming Senate on Monday would help allow concealed carry in the Wyoming Capitol building, where civilians are now prohibited from having firearms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wyoleg.gov\/Legislation\/2023\/SF0149\">Senate File 149\u00a0<\/a>would create an \u201cenhanced concealed carry permit.\u201d The current Wyoming concealed permitting process does not require applicants to take any actual firearms handling or live-fire training. Instead, they take only classroom or online courses.<\/p>\n<p>Under the bill, those regular concealed carry permits would still be available.
