The New York Times Has an Embarrassing Epiphany About \u2018Gun-free Zones.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve all seen signs announcing a particular place is a \u201cgun-free zone.\u201d While these signs are supposed to reduce gun violence by informing would-be shooters that their firearms aren\u2019t welcome on the site, the reality is that they are instead beacons alerting criminals to soft targets.<\/p>\n

And it looks like the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0may have finally figured that out. After a murder took place in Times Square on Thursday night, the paper openly questioned why posted signs banning guns from the area didn\u2019t stop the violence. \u201cThe shooting was the first since the creation of the expansive, signposted zone, the police said in a statement, and it immediately renewed questions about whether such a designation can truly protect the area,\u201d the so-called paper of record\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople feel emboldened to carry guns on the street,\u201d said Tom Harris, a retired New York City police inspector and the president of the Times Square Alliance, told the\u00a0Times<\/em>. \u201cA gun-free zone is not going to stop a criminal from carrying a gun.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have to admit I\u2019m shocked that the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0acknowledged this. While I\u2019d like to give them credit for that, the fact is the inefficacy of gun-free zones is something conservative media has been pointing out for years.<\/p>\n

In fact, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Pulse nightclub, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Virginia Tech University were all targeted by mass shooters despite being gun-free zones \u2014 and that\u2019s barely scratching the surface.\u00a0According to\u00a0a 2018 study<\/a>\u00a0by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), a whopping\u00a097.8% of mass shootings over a 68-year period occurred in \u201cgun-free zones.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, while it\u2019s great that the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0finally has acknowledged that gun-free zones are useless, this epiphany is decades too late.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
