HOUSE PASSES 2 BILLS RELATING TO PROPERTY RIGHTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"dateline\">OKLAHOMA CITY<\/b>\u00a0\u2013<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple protections in the state including \u201cStand Your Ground\u201d and the \u201cCastle Doctrine\u201d allowing Oklahomans to use physical or deadly force, if it\u2019s in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>A bill passing through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/623a22df6880e4532394d6c7\/House\">House<\/a>\u00a0Thursday expands part of the Castle Doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a simple bill, on your property if you feel that your life is threatened, you have the right to protect yourself,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/623d47226880e45323a8a881\/David%20Hardin\">David Hardin<\/a>, (R) Stillwell.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill 2049 expands the definition of a dwelling- allowing people to use physical or deadly force against people trespassing anywhere on their private property, not just breaking into their actual house.<\/p>\n<p>The previous law only applied to self-defense when a person broke into the actual home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/623908b66880e45323e5147d\/Democrats\">Democrats<\/a>\u00a0argue that this creates a vague law and opens more doors to problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are too many opportunities for accidental mishaps if we extend the Castle Doctrine,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/62390c1c6880e45323e7c16d\/John%20Waldron\">John Waldron<\/a>\u00a0(D) Tulsa.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/640a7374271cfcfcf225c137\/Jay%20Steagle\">Jay Steagle<\/a>, (R) Yukon, argued that this is just a recognition of what should already be in the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuggesting that an individual has the right to be on someone else\u2019s private property before any kind of action needs to be taken- even conversation is absolutely ridiculous,\u201d said Rep. Steagle.<\/p>\n<p>Many republicans say this bill is necessary for rural areas of the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live 30 minutes away from a maximum-security prison- I don\u2019t have time to ask them what they\u2019re doing there, I need to have the right to protect my property,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/storiesByEntityId\/640a7374271cfcfcf225c136\/Jim%20Grego\">Jim Grego<\/a>, (R) Wilburton.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats say property lines aren\u2019t always clear, and that this can create problems for people who may be out hiking or hunting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you all familiar with somebody that\u2019s been affected by being out in a rural area and death coming to you because you are out on someone else\u2019s land,\u201d questioned Rep. Goodwin.<\/p>\n<p>With all the debate the author reminded house members the intent behind his bill was simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is never intended for you to walk out and shoot anyone you want on your property, this bill is intended for you to be able to protect yourself,\u201d Rep.
