Bob McManus: Alvin Bragg didn\u2019t trust a grand jury to do his bidding in Daniel Penny subway chokehold case.<\/a><\/p>\n

Daniel Penny, the Marine Corps veteran who fatally subdued a deranged, threatening vagrant on the subway last week, was\u00a0arraigned Friday on manslaughter charges in Criminal Court.<\/a><\/p>\n

Anyone who expected differently in DA Alvin Bragg\u2019s Manhattan hasn\u2019t been paying attention.<\/p>\n

Penny had put Jordan Neely, a career criminal who was terrorizing the F Train May 1,\u00a0into a chokehold; Neely subsequently died<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and thus the charges.<\/p>\n

In less bizarre times \u2014 that is, before America lost its bearings on matters of crime, criminals, and simple justice itself \u2014 the case wouldn\u2019t be complicated: A vagrant was menacing subway passengers, a straphanger reacted, the vagrant died \u2014 and a grand jury could be trusted to do the right thing.<\/p>\n

But those days are history.<\/p>\n

While true justice demands context, that doesn\u2019t seem to matter to Bragg \u2014 nor to those activists determined to define everything in racial terms.<\/p>\n

Penny is white; Neely was black.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all the activists needed.<\/p>\n

Bragg, meanwhile,\u00a0is an unapologetic advocate<\/a>\u00a0of the George Soros approach to prosecution.<\/p>\n

That is, he announced early on that he intended to do as little of it as he could get away with; black New Yorkers are inequitably affected by vigorous law enforcement, so the less of it, the better.<\/p>\n
