She was 71.<\/p>\n<p>The illness was only recently discovered, her family said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Alley joined the cast of &#8220;Cheers&#8221; in 1987 as bar manager Rebecca Howe and left in 1993. She also played Veronica Chase in the television series \u201cVeronica\u2019s Closet,\u201d which ran from 1997 to 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In film, Alley turned in a memorable performance as Lt. Saavik in \u201cStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,\u201d and she starred alongside John Travolta in the \u201cLook Who\u2019s Talking&#8221; films.<\/p>\n<p>She was Ms. Robin Elizabeth Bishop in the 1987 film \u201cSummer School,\u201d and played Gladys Leeman in \u201cDrop Dead Gorgeous,\u201d which came out in 1999. The family asked for privacy Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mother\u2019s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did,\u201d they said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>She won two Emmy awards \u2014 for outstanding lead in a comedy series in \u201cCheers\u201d in 1991, and for outstanding lead in a miniseries or special for her role as Sally Goodson in \u201cDavid\u2019s Mother\u201d in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Alley, a native of Wichita, Kansas, married actor Parker Stevenson in 1983, and they adopted children William True and Lilly Price. The couple split in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Alley was a member of the Church of Scientology, which she often defended in interviews. She has credited Scientology\u2019s Narconon program with helping her defeat a cocaine addiction. She wrote two books, \u201cThe Art of Men,\u201d published in 2012, and \u201cHow To Lose Your Ass and Regain Your Life,\u201d published in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Travolta was among the first to share his thoughts after Alley\u2019s death was announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirstie was one of the most special relationships I\u2019ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. Prayers for all her family,\u201d Allen wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Lee Curtis, who appeared with Alley in the \u201cScream Queens\u201d television series,\u201d shared on Instagram that Alley was \u201ca beautiful mama bear in her very real life\u201d and that \u201cShe helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheers\u201d cast members reacted with sadness to the news. Rhea Perlman said she and Alley had become friends instantly. \u201cHer joy of being was boundless,\u201d Perlman said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Ted Danson, whose character in \u201cCheers,\u201d Sam Malone, pursues Howe as a love interest but is frequently rebuffed, recalled that he had watched an old episode on a plane Monday in which Alley was \u201ctruly brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard. As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died,\u201d Danson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children.
