Josh Hawley said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Missouri Republican discussed Penny\u2019s case during an interview with The Daily Signal about his new book, \u201cManhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs,\u201d following news that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u00a0had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/05\/11\/marine-charged-jordan-neely-death-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged<\/a>\u00a0Penny with second-degree manslaughter in the death in the New York<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>subway of Jordan Neely.<\/p>\n<p>The senator pointed out that the American people still don\u2019t have all the facts and details necessary to understand the incident fully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a good example of the extremely confusing signals that the culture and the media and the Left send to young men, which is that you don\u2019t hear much outrage on the Left \u2026 about the fact that New York subways and streets are extremely unsafe, and that if you are an everyday citizen walking or traveling, you may well be subject to violence,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cThat\u2019s just wiped away. We\u2019re supposed to just live with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But then, you\u2019ve got a guy who actually puts himself in danger to try to help other people. You\u2019ve got a subway passenger now saying, \u2018He saved my life. He put himself in danger.\u2019 That is automatically condemned before we even know all the facts. It\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, that must be wrong\u2019 or \u2018That must be crazy.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Young men looking at this situation, Hawley said, will likely think, \u201cWell, now, hold on. I thought that a man was supposed to be willing to put himself on the line. Isn\u2019t that what we celebrate in the Greatest Generation, for example, a whole generation of young men who went out there and sacrificed for their country? But you\u2019re telling me now, \u2018If I do that, I\u2019m going to be vilified, sued, charged, what have you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the criminal justice system plays out, Americans will learn the facts and the truth about what happened between Neely and Penny, Hawley said. But based on what is known?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sure looks like the guy who wanted to do good and wanted to protect others is being immediately condemned, while the criminality or potential criminality of the aggressor here is just sort of being overlooked,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A women who witnessed the altercation between Penny, 24, and Neely, 30, said that train passengers on a New York City subway train became increasingly uncomfortable when Neely, a homeless man\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-details-emerge-about-altercation-between-unstable-nyc-homeless-man-and-decorated-marine-criminal-charges-weighed\">with an extensive criminal record<\/a>\u00a0and documented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/13\/nyregion\/jordan-neely-top-50-mental-illness.html\">history of mental illness<\/a>, began loudly spewing violent and threatening remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sitting on a train reading my book, and, all of a sudden, I hear someone spewing this rhetoric. He said, \u2018I don\u2019t care if I have to kill an \u201cF,\u201d I will. I\u2019ll go to jail. I\u2019ll take a bullet,\u2019\u201d\u00a0the woman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/witness-jordan-neely-chokehold-death-calls-daniel-penny-hero\">told Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at where we are in the tube, in the sardine can, and I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, we\u2019re in between stations. There\u2019s nowhere we can go,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThe people on that train, we were scared. We were scared for our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Neely began using the words \u201ckill\u201d and \u201cbullet,\u201d the woman said, Penny stepped in. Penny\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/givesendgo-campaign-raises-more-than-2-million-for-daniel-penny\">restrained<\/a>\u00a0Neely in a headlock for several minutes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/former-marine-accused-of-choking-subway-rider-to-death-released-on-\/13242081\/\">according to ABC News<\/a>, during which time Neely reportedly lost consciousness. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>Penny remained on the scene to talk to police, as his lawyers have noted. He \u201cturned himself in here voluntarily and with the sort of dignity and integrity that is characteristic of his dignity of service to this grateful nation,\u201d defense attorney Thomas Kenniff said, ABC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Penny\u2019s lawyers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/former-marine-accused-of-choking-subway-rider-to-death-released-on-\/13242081\/\">have said<\/a>\u00a0he was acting in self-defense. A legal defense fund set up in the former Marine\u2019s name has raised more than $2.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Neely family attorney Lennon Edwards advocated for second-degree murder charges and another Neely family attorney, Donte Mills, has called for \u201cpeople to look at those that may be there in that [uncomfortable or dangerous] situation and say, \u2018Why?\u2019 And, \u2018How can I help them or make a difference?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/05\/07\/our-city-is-going-down-the-drain-protesters-clash-with-nypd-block-subway-over-chokehold-death\/\">Those who\u00a0<\/a>claim that Neely\u2019s death was racially motivated have participated in protests in New York City. Prominent Democrats, such as Rep. I\u2019m going to be vilified. If I want to be heroic, I\u2019m going to be told, \u201cNo, don\u2019t do that.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the other hand, if you do nothing, if you sit around in your parents\u2019 basement and look at a screen all day, you feel terrible about yourself,\u201d the senator continued, citing the dangers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/05\/18\/josh-hawley-masculinity-manhood-book-war-men\/\">pornography and social media<\/a>\u00a0consumption. \u201cAnd this is what we\u2019re seeing in men today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This all connects to why so many men of today feel that they lack purpose, are depressed, and feel alone, Hawley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the cultural dysfunction that the Left\u2019s ideology has led us to,\u201d Hawley concluded. \u201cAnd the antidote to that is a better vision. It\u2019s a better message, to say, \u2018No, we want you to be a hero. We want you to sacrifice yourself. We want you to put yourself on the line. We want you to try and serve others.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what you should do as a man,\u201d he said. \u201cYou should try to take on the roles of father and husband and warrior.
