Claims an AR-15 Is an \u2018Automatic Weapon\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"subheading\">CLAIM: During Friday\u2019s airing of\u00a0MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe,\u201d New Mexico Gov.\u00a0Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) claimed an AR-15 rifle is an \u201cautomatic weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">VERDICT: False. AR-15s are semiautomatic firearms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Grisham made her comments\u00a0during a discussion of the May 16, 2023, Farmington, New Mexico, shooting that left three people dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">CNN\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/16\/us\/farmington-new-mexico-shooting-tuesday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">identified<\/a> the Farmington gunman as an 18-year-old male and noted his family had worried about his mental health. He used three different guns in the attack and was ultimately killed by police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">One of the guns was an AR-15, which Grisham described as an \u201cautomatic weapon.\u201d She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Frankly, no one that isn\u2019t in the military \u2014 this is a weapon of war \u2014 or a trained police department, in my view, no one in America who isn\u2019t in one of those two situations should own an automatic weapon. There is no reason to own one of those.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Contrary to Grisham\u2019s assertion, AR-15s are semiautomatic firearms.
