{"id":93371,"date":"2023-06-04T01:57:07","date_gmt":"2023-06-04T06:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=93371"},"modified":"2023-06-04T01:57:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-04T06:57:07","slug":"93371","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=93371","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/nearly-30-of-people-under-30-support-government-surveillance-cameras-in-every-home-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly 30% of people under 30 support government surveillance cameras in every home: poll<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u2018Young people seem more willing to prioritize safety over ensuring robust freedom\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Roughly three in 10 Americans under 30 favor \u201cthe government installing surveillance cameras in every household to reduce domestic violence, abuse, and other illegal activity,\u201d according to the results of a new Cato Institute survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know how much of this preference for security over privacy or freedom is something unique to this generation (a cohort effect) or simply the result of youth (age effect),\u201d Cato\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/nearly-third-gen-z-favors-home-government-surveillance-cameras-1?s=03\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. \u201cHowever, there is reason to think part of this is generational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cato conducted its 2023 Central Bank Digital Currency National\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/survey-reports\/poll-only-16-americans-support-government-issuing-central-bank-digital-currency?au_hash=6aZ8djbslxSndG0DjZMmbUYgCJLRxYSdCn2wZibWmzA#\" rel=\"noopener\">Survey<\/a>\u00a0of 2,000 Americans in collaboration with YouGov from February 27 to March 8. It included a wide swath of ideologies, ages and other demographics.<\/p>\n<p>One question asked: \u201cWould you favor or oppose the government installing surveillance cameras in every household to reduce domestic violence, abuse, and other illegal activity?\u201d Overall, most respondents were against the idea:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Strongly favor 6%<br \/>\nSomewhat favor 8%<br \/>\nNeither favor or oppose 10%<br \/>\nSomewhat oppose 7%<br \/>\nStrongly oppose 68%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the younger generation tends to favor the idea, support declines with age, \u201cdropping to 20 percent among 30\u201344 year olds and dropping considerably to 6 percent among those over the age of 45,\u201d Cato\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/nearly-third-gen-z-favors-home-government-surveillance-cameras-1?s=03\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 It is also possible that increased support for government surveillance among the young has common roots with what Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt describe in the Coddling of the American Mind: young people seem more willing to prioritize safety (from possible violence or hurtful words) over ensuring robust freedom (from government surveillance or to speak freely).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The survey results also found that, when broken down by ethnicity and ideology, minorities and the center-left are more open to government surveillance than other categories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-128715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 805px) 100vw, 805px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey.jpg 805w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey-381x400.jpg 381w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey-105x110.jpg 105w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Catosurvey-768x807.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"805\" height=\"846\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrican Americans (33 percent) and Hispanic Americans (25 percent) are more likely than White Americans (9 percent) and Asian Americans (11 percent) to support in\u2010\u200bhome government surveillance. Democrats (17 percent) are also more likely than Republicans (11 percent) to support it but not by a wide margin,\u201d Cato reported.<\/p>\n<p>The libertarian think tank\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/nearly-third-gen-z-favors-home-government-surveillance-cameras-1?s=03\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a>\u00a0that it asked the question about home surveillance as part of its survey on Central Bank Digital Currencies \u201cto see whether there is a relationship between opinions on the government issuing a central bank digital currency and government installing cameras in homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that the two opinions are correlated. Interestingly, more than half (53 percent) of those who support the United States adopting a CBDC are also supportive of government surveillance cameras in homes, while only 2 percent of those who oppose a CBDC feel the same,\u201d the institute reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis suggests there may be a common consideration that is prompted by both issues.
