Now They\u2019re REALLY Serious: Biden Taps VP Harris to Lead Administration\u2019s Gun Control Messaging<\/a><\/p>\n

President Joe Biden made an\u00a0announcement<\/a>\u00a0he hopes will excite the gun\u00a0control activists for his 2024 reelection bid. The president is calling in his Big Gun\u00a0to \u201clead the messaging\u201d on his gun\u00a0control accomplishments to generate buzz.<\/p>\n

Media\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0the president assigned Vice President Kamala Harris,\u00a0widely panned<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0\u201cone<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0worst VPs in history<\/a>,\u201d to be the \u201cleading voice\u201d on gun\u00a0control and charged her with making those issues front and center for the campaign.<\/p>\n

Election Day 2024 is \u201cjust\u201d about 500 days away.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Message<\/h3>\n

President Biden is in dire need of some help to sell his gun\u00a0control bona fides to the activists he wants to keep satisfied. He has failed to pass meaningful gun\u00a0control legislation around many of his biggest promises and all but admitted he\u2019s unable to do so. His biggest targets continue to be renewing\u00a0a national ban<\/a>\u00a0on modern sporting rifles (MSRs) and to continue the\u00a0false attacks<\/a>\u00a0against the lawful firearm industry through repeated\u00a0lies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MSRs are the most popular-selling centerfire rifles in America, with more than 24.4 million in circulation since 1990. That makes them\u00a0more common<\/a>\u00a0than there are Ford F-150 pickup trucks on the road. Public\u00a0polling<\/a>\u00a0around MSRs and whether or not they should be banned shows Americans are much more informed and accepting of the popular semiautomatic rifle and that they don\u2019t support a ban. The current data flies in the face of what the president and his chief messenger Vice President Harris want to pitch to the American people.<\/p>\n

The gun\u00a0control White House duo of President Biden and Vice President Harris face significant obstacles in setting the gun\u00a0control agenda. The first is Congress and the second is the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

Congress won\u2019t entertain legislation introduced to ban MSRs \u2013 AR-15 and AK-47 style rifles and their variants. That\u2019s not to say the Biden administration couldn\u2019t attempt to try to get creative with\u00a0executive orders<\/a>\u00a0and rewriting regulations. They\u2019ve done as much with the Frame & Receiver Final Rule and the Stabilizing Pistol Brace Final Rule. Both are dubious though and are facing\u00a0legal<\/a>\u00a0and legislative challenges.<\/p>\n

Gun\u00a0control activists remain\u00a0irritated and angry<\/a>\u00a0at the Biden administration for their inaction on more gun\u00a0control. What they\u2019re really mad at is that the Biden administration doesn\u2019t have the authority to erase the Second Amendment, which is preventing a radical gun\u00a0control agenda.<\/p>\n

The Messenger<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt is time for Congress to act and stop with the false choices. This is not about getting rid of the Second Amendment,\u201d the vice president once\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0CNN. \u201cIf we really want something that is going to be lasting, we need to pass legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a stark contrast to when Vice President Harris was a candidate for the top job. During the 2020 presidential race,\u00a0she vowed<\/a>\u00a0to voters to go on her own, unilaterally, to enact strict gun\u00a0control measures if Congress didn\u2019t act within her first 100 days in office. That included pledging to ban the importation of all so-called \u201cassault weapons,\u201d or MSRs.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0media reports<\/a>,\u00a0she also\u00a0pledged<\/a>\u00a0to mandate \u201cnear universal background checks\u201d requiring anyone who sells five or more guns per year to run background checks on all sales and that she would \u201crevoke a gun\u00a0dealer or manufacturer license if they broke the law and make them criminally liable\u201d through executive action.<\/p>\n

Vice President Harris has a challenging task ahead to lead the messaging efforts for an administration that\u2019s facing the realities of trying to sell something the American public isn\u2019t buying. The administration has already admitted failure to do what they promised and are stymied to act further on gun\u00a0control restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Did That\u2019<\/h3>\n

For President Biden\u2019s campaign to attempt to convince the American public to re-hire him, it may not matter who the messenger is on their gun\u00a0control platform, Vice President Harris or someone else. Americans just might not be buying it. After all, it\u2019s President Biden who has overseen the\u00a0ongoing historic firearm purchasing stretch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The confluence of several circumstances has meant the political calculus has changed for voters when it comes to gun\u00a0rights and firearm ownership. The elected leaders who represent them would be wise to take note.<\/p>\n

Significant numbers of\u00a0minorities<\/a>\u00a0have purchased firearms since 2020, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans. Women have made up between 30-40 percent of firearm purchasers during this historic stretch. Gun\u00a0rights groups from across the\u00a0political spectrum<\/a>,\u00a0including\u00a0progressive left-leaning groups<\/a>,\u00a0are popular and seeing membership numbers dramatically increase.<\/p>\n

It might be time to get one of the gas pump stickers of President Joe Biden saying, \u201cI did that<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s his administration\u2019s policies that are driving millions of Americans to lawful gun\u00a0ownership. Sending Vice President Harris out on the trail to be the \u201cleading voice\u201d on those policies doesn\u2019t resemble an administration that\u2019s listening to the American people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
