American U. students at odds with D.C. group that favors unarmed police<\/a><\/p>\n

Some American University students are skeptical at claims made by the District of Columbia\u2019s so-called \u201cPeace Team\u201d that unarmed police are \u201chighly effective\u201d at preventing gun violence \u2014 in one of\u00a0the deadliest cities<\/a>\u00a0in the country.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0its website<\/a>, the DC Peace Team\u2019s mission is to \u201ccultivate the habits and skills of nonviolence in communities, so [it] can better resist injustice, and thus, build a more sustainable just peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team is a huge proponent of, and utilizes,\u00a0restorative justice<\/a>\u00a0(which has been growing in the nation\u2019s school systems,\u00a0much to many teachers\u2019 chargrin<\/a>) and weaponless \u201ccivilian protection units.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Peace Team Board Member Sal Corbin\u00a0(pictured)<\/em>, such methods \u201cemphasize inclusion rather than exclusion [\u2026] and punishment.\u201dA former psychology professor, Corbin told\u00a0The Eagle<\/em><\/a>\u00a0he grew up in a violent atmosphere where punishment was \u201cswift and severe.\u201d<\/p>\n

As such, he wanted to study an alternative. Corbin believes an unarmed police force is \u201cextremely effective\u201d and involves \u201cdeploying teams to events where violence or escalation is a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Schentrup of the youth gun reform group Team ENOUGH added that \u201cwhen victims of [gun] violence don\u2019t get help, their natural response is to traumatize other individuals in that same way.”<\/p>\n

The Peace Team notes it will even intervene in certain situations \u201cwith their bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

But\u00a0The Eagle<\/em>\u00a0notes some American U. students are wary. One student said even with stricter gun control, criminals will still find a way to possess firearms, so yes, cops should be armed. Another said disarming police when the threat of a mass shooting is ever-present seems like a bad idea.<\/p>\n

American, like other colleges in and around the nation\u2019s capital (Georgetown, Howard) have unarmed campus cops. George Washington University, however, recently decided to arm a small percentage of its officers.<\/p>\n

Washington DC\u2019s violent crime\u00a0is up 10 percent<\/a>\u00a0so far this year, and is\u00a0147 percent higher<\/a>\u00a0than the national average. Other crimes in the city occur at a rate 87 percent higher than the national average.<\/p>\n

Even Corbin conceded that \u201cclearly there are circumstances where weaponry is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal isn\u2019t to replace law enforcement entirely, but rather give an alternative approach to it that doesn\u2019t necessitate, increase or escalate violence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
