BREAKING: Supreme Court Rejects Race-Based College Admissions<\/a><\/p>\n

In a major 6-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court has struck down\u00a0race-based admissions<\/a>\u00a0at two universities, declaring it a violation of the equal protection clause.<\/p>\n

The conservative justices, led by Chief Justice John Roberts,\u00a0made up the majority<\/a>. Justice Sonya Sotomayor wrote the dissent in the Harvard case and was joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Jackson wrote the dissent in the University of North Carolina case, joined by Sotomayor and Kagan.<\/p>\n

In the majority opinion, Roberts writes that the court has \u201cpermitted race-based admissions only within the confines of narrow restrictions. University programs must comply with strict scrutiny, they may never use race as a stereotype or negative, and \u2014 at some point \u2014 they must end.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also wrote that \u201chowever well-intentioned and implemented in good faith,\u201d the admissions programs at Harvard and UNC \u201cfail each of these criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n
