Forbes Claims More than 330 \u2018Mass Shootings\u2019 This Year Using Misleading Data<\/a><\/p>\n

Forbes<\/em>\u00a0pointed to misleading data and claimed on Monday there had been over 330 \u201cmass shootings\u201d in the United States so far in 2023.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0labeled<\/a> their report \u201cbreaking\u201d news.<\/p>\n

Writing at\u00a0Forbes,\u00a0<\/em>Ana Faguy relied on the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a pro-gun-control database which abandoned the long-standing definition of a \u201cmass shooting\u201d as\u00a0four or more deaths in a single incident by a single gunman and replaced it with\u00a0\u00a0\u201ca minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, not including any shooter who may also have been killed or injured in the incident.\u201d GVA\u2019s new definition allows drive-by shootings, targeted gang attacks, and other non-mass shootings to be counted as \u201cmass shootings,\u201d thus inflating the number of reported incidents.<\/p>\n

For example, on Monday Baltimore WBALTV\u00a0reported<\/a> that GVA was still counting the April 15, 2023, Dadeville, Georgia, birthday party attack as a \u201cmass shooting.\u201d GVA is doing this although at least six people have been arrested in connection with the attack.<\/p>\n

Yet Faguy\u00a0quoted<\/a> GVA numbers, saying, \u201cThere have been more than 330 mass shootings so far this year, according to data collected by the Gun Violence Archive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breitbart News\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0The Hill<\/em>\u00a0relied on GVA numbers last year and ended up claiming over 600 mass shootings in the United States by Thanksgiving Day 2022.<\/p>\n

On July 26, 2021, Breitbart News\u00a0observed<\/a>\u00a0that the GVA is also able to report higher numbers of \u201cmass shootings\u201d because it lists defensive gun uses and officer-involved gun uses against criminals as \u201cgun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breitbart News\u00a0pointed out<\/a>\u00a0on May 7, 2023, that GVA\u2019s new definition allows drive-by shootings, targeted gang attacks, and other non-mass shootings to be counted as \u201cmass shootings,\u201d thus increasing the number of reported incidents. While President Joe Biden was claiming there had already been \u201croughly 200 mass shootings\u201d in America for the year,\u00a0a database maintained by the Associated Press\/USA Today<\/em>\/Northeastern University\u00a0showed<\/a>\u00a0there had actually been 19 such incidents in the United States from January 1, 2023, to May 2, 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
