{"id":94278,"date":"2023-07-10T16:27:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T21:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=94278"},"modified":"2023-07-10T16:27:06","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T21:27:06","slug":"94278","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=94278","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2023\/07\/10\/st-louis-gun-control-n72382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis mayor trying to backtrack from gun control texts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>St. Louis is, like a lot of larger cities, pretty anti-gun.<\/p>\n<p>They can\u2019t do as much about it as they\u2019d like there, but that\u2019s because Missouri has preemption, and that handcuffs city leaders a fair bit. Officials there are still willing to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2023\/07\/06\/st-louis-open-carry-n72265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pass what gun control they can<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, as we\u2019ve pointed out more than once, gun control isn\u2019t really the answer.<\/p>\n<p>It seems\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/politics\/st-louis-mayor-text-messages-gun-laws\/63-2238e48a-faa6-436d-a436-9f8af68ebbe9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mayor of St. Louis agreed<\/a>, though she\u2019s backtracking now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones\u2019 office is in damage control mode after someone at City Hall released thousands of text messages from her personal cell phone, some of which raise questions about her views on gun laws.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The message<\/span>s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/politics\/st-louis-mayor-sunshine-request\/63-bb45c23c-7e86-4f26-b001-6823a43106ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0were released earlier this week\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">under an open records request.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cChicago has strict gun laws as well but that doesn\u2019t deter gun violence,\u201d Jones texted in a group chat to her father Virvus Jones and advisor Richard Callow on March 21. \u201cIt\u2019s about investing in the people.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On the surface, the mayor\u2019s private remarks appear to contradict some of her public statements calling for stricter gun control laws in Missouri.\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The mayor\u2019s office issued a statement through one of her spokesmen on Friday afternoon seeking to clarify her position.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGun laws are just one part of the solution,\u201d Jones spokesman Nick Desideri said. \u201cThere\u2019s a difference between deterring behavior and making it harder to get firearms and weaponry; for example, there\u2019s no doubt that gun laws in the blue region around Newark help reduce violence as opposed to here.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In her private text messages, the mayor also made a reference to prolonged community investment delivering a significant reduction in violence in Newark, New Jersey.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNewark, NJ has the same size population, same size police force, and similar racial demographics, yet had 50 murders in 2022,\u201d the mayor wrote. \u201cI visited these programs first hand and I know that they work. We just need the will\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, there\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0doubt that the gun laws around Newark had any impact on the violent crime rate versus other interventions attempted there.<\/p>\n<p>We can say this because, frankly, the rest of New Jersey has tons of gun control and still has plenty of high-crime areas. If gun control were even part of the solution, we wouldn\u2019t be seeing that.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that Jones really wants these community intervention programs but because of her party affiliation, she has to spout the gun control line. That\u2019s a shame, too, because I happen to think these community interventions could do wonders for St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>Guns are not the problem and gun control is not the answer.<\/p>\n<p>The problem has always been people, which is why even our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2022\/06\/02\/guns-problem-n58985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-gun homicide rate is higher<\/a>\u00a0than many other nations\u2019 total murder rates.<\/p>\n<p>The interventions would probably work and Jones really should stick with her instincts here and stop pushing for gun control.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are pointing out the hypocrisy here, and they\u2019re right to do so. Jones knows gun control doesn\u2019t work, but she\u2019s pushing for it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of pro-gun people have long figured Democrats knew this anyway and still wanted gun control despite this fact.
