{"id":94344,"date":"2023-07-13T02:10:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T07:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=94344"},"modified":"2023-07-13T02:10:41","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T07:10:41","slug":"94344","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=94344","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/slaynews.com\/news\/california-democrats-block-bill-trafficking-minors-serious-felony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Democrats Block Bill Making Trafficking of Minors a Serious Felony<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Democrats on the California Assembly\u2019s Public Safety Committee have blocked a bill that would make the trafficking of minors a serious felony.<\/p>\n<p>The inexplicable move was met with outrage from human trafficking victims who have been advocating for the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, HB 14, noted that \u201cCalifornia consistently ranks number one in the nation in the number of human trafficking cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman trafficking is among the world\u2019s fastest-growing criminal enterprises and is estimated to be a $150,000,000,000 a year global industry,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would have made human trafficking of a minor subject to California\u2019s Three Strikes Law.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law, someone convicted twice could be sentenced to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The bill had already passed unanimously in the State Senate.<\/p>\n<p>However, not even one of the six Democrats on the committee would vote on the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The only yes votes were cast by two Republicans, Assemblymen Juan Alanis and Tom Lackey.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Democrat Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, the Assembly Public Safety Committee\u2019s chairman, opposed the bill.<\/p>\n<p>GOP state Sen. Shannon Grove, who co-authored the bill, said she had spoken with Democrats on the committee prior to the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey all thought it was a good bill and said they would consider it, but there is this issue of rolling the chair, so I don\u2019t think anyone was going to stand up against the chair,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re horrible!\u201d yelled members of the audience at the meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Democrats Block Bill Making Trafficking of Minors a Serious Felony Democrats on the California Assembly\u2019s Public Safety Committee have blocked a bill that would make the trafficking of minors a serious felony.
