Leaked emails expose Biden White House\u2019s attacks on the First Amendment<\/a><\/p>\n The\u00a0\u201cTwitter Files\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/u>reporting from last year exposed a disturbing collusion between\u00a0Twitter<\/a>\u00a0executives and officials from the federal government to censor the public\u2019s speech. But new revelations from Congress show that the Biden\u00a0White House<\/a>\u00a0and Facebook have engaged in similar collusion.<\/p>\n On Thursday, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who leads the House Judiciary Committee, released internal Facebook emails that show the Big Tech platform was explicitly pressured by the Biden administration to take down specific posts that the president\u2019s allies disliked.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This pressure campaign from the White House meaningfully influenced Facebook\u2019s moderation policies. For example, the Biden administration apparently complained about a specific Tucker Carlson video, and Facebook\u00a0responded<\/a><\/u>by saying it had reduced the video\u2019s reach by 50%.<\/p>\n Another internal\u00a0email<\/a><\/u>shows broad changes considered in response to pressure from Biden\u2019s White House: \u201c[Facebook\u2019s] Leadership asked Misinfo Policy … to brainstorm some additional policy levers we can pull to be more aggressive against … misinformation. This is stemming from the continued criticism of our approach from the [Biden] administration.\u201d<\/p>\n Other\u00a0emails<\/a><\/u>show Facebook censoring additional content at the behest of President Joe Biden\u2019s surgeon general.<\/p>\n Jordan\u00a0concluded<\/a><\/u>, \u201cThese documents, AND OTHERS that were just produced to the Committee, prove that the Biden Admin abused its powers to coerce Facebook into censoring Americans, preventing free and open discourse on issues of critical public importance.\u201d<\/p>\n Based on the evidence, it\u2019s hard to disagree with that conclusion. When private platforms choose of their own volition to censor or moderate certain content, that\u2019s not a First Amendment matter. (It still might be wrong or overzealous, and we\u2019re free to criticize their decisions.) But when they do so in response to aggressive pressure from governmental officials, that tramples all over the spirit of the First Amendment. So, with perhaps narrowly tailored exceptions for national security, it shouldn\u2019t even be legal for government officials to lobby private platforms to censor the public.<\/p>\n This is an outrage \u2014 and the backlash\u00a0should<\/i>\u00a0be bipartisan.
