It is often celebrated by one side or the other. I\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2023\/04\/10\/i-was-screaming-before-you-interrupted-me-american-politics-has-become-amplified-rage\/\">previously discussed<\/a>\u00a0how a scene like the recent confrontation on the floor of the Tennessee House perfectly captured our \u201cage of rage.\u201d Protesters filled the capitol building to protest the failure to pass gun-control legislation. Three Democratic state representatives \u2014 Justin Jones from Nashville, Justin Pearson from Memphis, and Gloria Johnson of Knoxville \u2014 were unwilling to yield to the majority. They disrupted the floor proceedings with a bullhorn and screaming at their colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>It is a scene familiar to many of us in academia, where events are regularly canceled by those who shout down others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The three members yelled \u201cNo action, no peace\u201d\u00a0and \u201cPower to the people\u201d as their colleagues objected to their stopping the legislative process. Undeterred, the three refused to allow \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d to continue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nobel Laureate Albert Camus once said, \u201cInsurrection is certainly not the sum total of human experience but \u2026 it is our historic reality.\u201d Those words came to mind when Tennessee\u2019s House of Representatives\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2023\/04\/10\/i-was-screaming-before-you-interrupted-me-american-politics-has-become-amplified-rage\/\">expelled two members<\/a>\u00a0accused of disrupting legislative proceedings in what some called an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/04\/06\/tennessee-house-expels-one-dem-over-gun-protest-targets-two-more-00090908\">insurrection<\/a>\u201d or a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/04\/06\/tennessee-expulsion-vote-democrats-justin-jones-gloria-johnson-justin-pearson\/70079929007\/\">mutiny<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only a few days before the Tennessee House floor fight, a confrontation occurred off the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington which captured perfectly this new political reality.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/jamaal-bowman\/\">Jamaal Bowman\u00a0<\/a>(D-N.Y.) was shown on videotape\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2023\/03\/30\/i-was-screaming-before-you-interrupted-me-rep-bowman-raves-in-capitol-on-gun-control\/\">screaming about gun control<\/a>\u00a0in the Capitol as his colleagues left the floor following a vote. Various Democratic members, including former House Majority Whip\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/steny-hoyer\/\">Steny Hoyer\u00a0<\/a>(D-Md.), tried to calm Bowman. However, when Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/thomas-massie\/\">Thomas Massie\u00a0<\/a>(R-Ky.) asked Bowman to stop yelling, Bowman shouted back: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wswidqI4CjA\">I was screaming before you interrupted me<\/a>\u201d \u2014 which could go down as the epitaph for our age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem is that political figures on both sides are attempting to harness this rage.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0They are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/09\/30\/proud-boys-and-antifa-emerge-as-the-winners-from-the-presidential-debate\/\">playing a dangerous game<\/a>. Trump\u2019s inflammatory tweets are an example. Likewise, former Democratic National Committee deputy chair Keith Ellison, now the Minnesota attorney general, once said Antifa would \u201cstrike fear in the heart\u201d of Trump. This was after Antifa had been involved in numerous acts of violence and its website was banned in Germany.
