Do Gun-Control Groups Care What Really Causes Mass Shootings? Everytown Lawsuit Says No<\/a><\/p>\n

The Biden administration has already put nearly\u00a02,000 gun sellers<\/a>\u00a0out of business in just two years. Just a few years ago, a lawsuit helped drive the 200-year-old Remington Arms into bankruptcy. But activists won\u2019t stop suing gun shops and anyone else that comes close to the industry.<\/p>\n

Last week, attorneys from Everytown Law, the legal arm of Michael Bloomberg\u2019s gun-control group Everytown\u00a0for Gun Safety,\u00a0filed<\/a>\u00a0a lawsuit against\u00a0a shop that sold the gun used in the fatal shooting of 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, in May 2022. The murderer is a racist who specifically targeted racial minorities. Everytown claims the attack \u201ccould have been prevented<\/a>,\u201d but in fact, the gun seller performed all of the proper background checks.<\/p>\n

Others are also being sued, including the 18-year-old murderer\u2019s parents and social media companies that allegedly \u201ctransformed and addicted\u201d the murderer by allowing extremist content on their sites.<\/p>\n

But the lessons from this shooting, like\u00a0many other mass public shootings<\/a>, are hiding in plain sight. One needs only to read the killer\u2019s manifesto.<\/p>\n

\u201cAreas where CCW [carrying a concealed weapon] are outlawed or prohibited may be good areas of attack,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0the shooter. \u201cAreas with strict gun laws are also great places of attack.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But Everytown ignores those quotes. Nor does the organization mention that the Buffalo mass murderer\u00a0self-identified<\/a>\u00a0as an \u201ceco-fascist national socialist\u201d and a member of the \u201cmild-moderate authoritarian left.\u201d The shooter expressed concern that minority immigrants have too many children and will damage the environment. \u201cThe invaders are the ones overpopulating the world,\u201d he wrote. \u201cKill the invaders, kill the overpopulation and by doing so save the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The murderer argued that capitalists are destroying the environment and are at the root of much of the problem. \u201cThe trade of goods is to be discouraged at all costs,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

Overpopulation, business-hating, and the environment are hardly signature conservative issues. It\u2019s certainly not something you\u2019ll hear from any of the Republican presidential candidates. And while some Republicans believe in limiting international trade, it\u2019s not for environmental reasons.<\/p>\n

So who is to blame for radicalizing this murderer? The media and politicians warning of a climate crisis deserve some blame for the killer\u2019s \u201ceco-fascism.\u201d Indeed, climate activists argue time and again that overpopulation is part of the problem. \u201cIt does lead, I think, young people to have a legitimate question: Is it OK to still have children?\u201d\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., in 2019. That same year she also\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0that the \u201cworld will end in 12 years if we don\u2019t address climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nor does President Biden help matters when he\u00a0tells the nation<\/a>\u00a0that the environment \u201cposes an existential threat to our lives. \u2026 This is code red.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Everytown wants to sue Big Tech outlets for radicalizing this mass murderer, maybe it should sue them for running \u201cextremist content\u201d from AOC, Biden, and various environmentalists.<\/p>\n

Psychiatrists had previously evaluated the shooter without finding him to be a danger to himself or others \u2014 which is nothing unusual.\u00a0Half of the mass public shooters<\/a>\u00a0since 1998 had seen mental health professionals. But if trained mental health professionals couldn\u2019t realize this man was so dangerous, it\u2019s hard to blame the parents. It certainly doesn\u2019t make sense to sue them.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, lawsuits, such as this one by interest groups like Everytown, are more interested in punishing people they oppose or causing others to change their behavior in desired ways than seeking the truth. With billionaire Michael Bloomberg\u2019s deep pockets, Everytown does not worry about funding its lawsuits. The same can\u2019t be said for their targets, such as a small gun store. Social media companies aren\u2019t going to be bankrupted by the lawsuits, but they may be even more likely to censor material that gun-control groups such as Everytown dislike.<\/p>\n

The killer wasn\u2019t born an eco-fascist. For the sake of our society\u2019s health and safety, we should be thinking twice before engaging in hyperbolic alarmism that can work impressionable young people into a frenzy, though lawsuits when we disagree with people isn\u2019t the obvious answer. And when someone does go crazy, people need to be able to defend themselves. It\u2019s either that or we could give in to gun-control activists by giving shooters more \u201cgreat places of attack.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
