{"id":95609,"date":"2023-08-31T11:20:09","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T16:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95609"},"modified":"2023-08-31T11:20:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T16:20:26","slug":"95609","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95609","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoland.com\/2023\/08\/mass-shootings-have-no-correlation-to-gun-laws-says-report\/#axzz8ByyDJeEd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mass Shootings Have \u2018No Correlation to Gun Laws,\u2019 says Report<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S.A.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Washington, D.C.\u2014a jurisdiction with some of the strictest gun control laws in the country\u2014leads the nation with \u201cthe highest rate of mass shootings per capita,\u201d according to a report in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12340185\/Americas-mass-shooting-hotspots-revealed-kind-study-breaks-thousands-massacres-state-appears-NO-correlation-gun-control-laws.html\" data-uri=\"0be70426e91f35e46c612a6e31eeb8e0\">Daily Mail<\/a>, citing new research released this week by medical researchers in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how the Daily Mail headlined its story: \u201cAmerica\u2019s mass shooting hotspots revealed: First of its kind study breaks down thousands of massacres by state \u2013 and there\u2019s NO correlation between gun control laws.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study is published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamanetworkopen.2023.25868?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=072623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-uri=\"f941e2ab04611d9463ac134449c607f9\"><strong>JAMA Network Open<\/strong><\/a>, and it relies on data from the Gun Violence Archive, a database often criticized by the firearms community. The work was done by researchers at the University of Colorado: Leslie M. Barnard, MPH, Department of Epidemiology, Colorado School of Public Health; Erin Wright-Kelly, DrPH, MA, Injury and Violence Prevention Center, Colorado School of Public Health, and Marian E. Betz, MD, MPH, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-17\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1671218810065-0\">The report may cool some jets in the gun control community, which has maintained that states with the most guns and \u201clax\u201d laws have the highest number of shootings. But here\u2019s what the report says:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe rate of mass shootings per 1,000,000 people was highest in the District of Columbia (10.4 shootings), followed by much lower rates in Louisiana (4.2 mass shootings) and Illinois (3.6 mass shootings), the states with the next 2 highest rates<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2807638?utm_campaign=articlePDF&amp;utm_medium=articlePDFlink&amp;utm_source=articlePDF&amp;utm_content=jamanetworkopen.2023.25868#zld230133t1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tab-toggle=\".tab-nav-figure-table\" data-uri=\"f80e7c064c9dffe543ba584fa00ac1c6\">Table<\/a>).\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Translation: Gun laws do not appear to have an impact, since the District of Columbia and the state of Illinois have restrictive laws, while Louisiana is far less restrictive.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As detailed by the Daily Mail, the \u201cTop Ten\u201d jurisdictions for mass shootings are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Washington, D.C. (10.43 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Louisiana (4.28 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Illinois (3.61 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi (2.91 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Alabama (2.32 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Missouri (2.29 per million)<\/li>\n<li>South Carolina (2.26 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Delaware (2.18 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Tennessee (2.03 per million)<\/li>\n<li>Maryland (2.2 per million)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1681151438500-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CLXkyZmmh4EDFWXPKAUdI9gLhQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22702991301\/Ammoland\/AL_In-Content_2_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"AmmolandDFPAdParallaxerCont_138444134786\">\n<div>\n<div>Another interesting revelation in the report explains, \u201cFrom 2014 to 2022, there were 4011 mass shootings, ranging from zero events in Hawaii and North Dakota to 414 events in Illinois. For these 9 years, one-third (27.3%) were social-related mass shootings, 15.8% were crime related, 11.1% were domestic violence (DV) related, 1.4% were school or work related, and 52.0% were not a part of these categories (<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2807638?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=072623#zld230133t1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tab-toggle=\".tab-nav-figure-table\" data-uri=\"06d8fbec4b70935a1a79fd3aaa705ced\">Table<\/a>). There was a median of 45 mass shootings per state for all states and the District of Columbia (mean, 78.6). A total of 21\u202f006 people were killed or injured (<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2807638?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=072623#zld230133t1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tab-toggle=\".tab-nav-figure-table\" data-uri=\"06d8fbec4b70935a1a79fd3aaa705ced\">Table<\/a>).\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>More data which may be problematic for proponents of stricter gun control laws, shows Illinois had the most mass shootings (414), California came in second with 367 while Texas reportedly had 270 such incidents. Gun law differences between the three states are dramatic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The state with the highest rate of gun ownership, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/state-rankings\/gun-ownership-by-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-uri=\"d8f915a0dc39ac5a1666833d329f284f\">World Population Review<\/a>, is Montana, where 66.3 percent of adults own a gun, and it had one of the lowest numbers of mass shootings at 4. Neighboring Wyoming, which is second highest for gun ownership at 66.2 percent of adults owning guns had only one (1) mass shooting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1681151478485-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CLbkyZmmh4EDFWXPKAUdI9gLhQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22702991301\/Ammoland\/AL_In-Content_3_0__container__\">Meanwhile, New York, with 19.9 percent gun ownership, had 186 mass shootings, and neighboring New Jersey, with 14.7 percent gun ownership, had 93 mass shootings, according to a state-by-state chart published with the study.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>And to demonstrate further how gun laws do not correlate with mass shootings, Hawaii, with 14.9 percent gun ownership and North Dakota, with 55.1 percent gun ownership, had no (0) mass shootings, the only two states on the chart with zero incidents during the study period.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Daily Mail report quotes Ph.D. student Barnard, who stated, \u201cWe wanted to help explain the \u2018why, where and how often\u2019 to give people an understanding of this issue.\u00a0\u201cThis study is not intended to answer every question, but highlights components to generate more hypotheses,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Barnard acknowledged that the definition of a \u201cmass shooting\u201d varies, \u201cdepending on the source. While we consider mass shootings as four or more persons shot or killed,\u201d Barnard said, \u201csome data sources only count deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She acknowledged that this discrepancy could make research difficult for epidemiologists.\u00a0The report could make things just as difficult for the gun prohibition lobby, which has argued frequently that states with so-called \u201clax\u201d gun laws are more deadly than states with more restrictive laws.
