From the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/ranjit-singh\/2023\/08\/28\/jacksonville-assailant-found-a-soft-target-after-security-scared-him-away-from-the-first-n74200#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jacksonville assailant found a soft target after security scared him away from the first<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Prior to the shooting, the gunman had been turned away from the campus of a nearby historically Black university, Edward Waters University. There, he refused to identify himself to an on-campus security officer and was asked to leave, the university stated in a news release.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cThe individual returned to their car and left campus without incident. The encounter was reported to the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office by EWU security,\u201d the school said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was obvious why the assailant ran away from there. An armed on-campus security officer arrived. That would have meant an immediate confrontation, which the assailant did not want. He wanted to take his own sweet time ending the lives of innocent, unarmed victims.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out, however, that this was not a one-off occurrence. The assailant had initially planned to attack a\u00a0<i>different<\/i>\u00a0Family Dollar store and ran away from there also because he saw the possibility of immediate armed resistance.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/29\/us\/jacksonville-florida-shooting-dollar-store-tuesday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN\u2019s newer report<\/a>\u00a0states this (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/bD1ir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230829114733\/https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/29\/us\/jacksonville-florida-shooting-dollar-store-tuesday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">links<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The Jacksonville gunman\u2019s dad called 911 after the deadly rampage started. Here\u2019s what he said about his son<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Authorities have released details from a 911 call made by the father of [***] \u2013 the gunman who killed three people in what authorities called a racially motivated rampage at a Dollar General store in Florida. [\u2026]<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>After the gunfire started, [***] texted his father and told him to go into his room, where the father found a will and a suicide note, Jacksonville\u2019s sheriff said. [\u2026]<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>[***] had been getting psychiatric help and was on medication, but it looked like his son had stopped taking his medication because there was a full bottle that was filled on July 23, his father told the operator.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The father said he called the Clay County Sheriff\u2019s Office a few years ago when his son threatened to kill himself.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>[***] flunked out of college, then worked at Home Depot and was \u201cpretty much been living in his room\u201d after losing that job, his father told the operator.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The same factors \u2013 mental illness, self-isolation, unemployment \u2013 play out in a lot of these incidents. Clearly, this man was sick to begin with. At some point, he also went down the path of hate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Investigators believe the gunman originally intended to attack a different dollar store \u2013 a Family Dollar he visited just minutes before driving to the university, Waters told CNN\u2019s Abby Phillip on Monday night.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Waters believes the sight of a security vehicle arriving at the store and parking outside deterred the shooter.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t think he wanted to have any confrontation with someone that would create an issue for him or stop him from doing what he wanted to do,\u201d Waters said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cHe had a goal in mind,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cI think he wanted those stores \u2013 one of those stores. I don\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, the assailant first went to a Family Dollar store, saw a security vehicle, drove away to Edward Waters University. a Historically Black College\/University (HBCU),\u00a0<em>again<\/em>\u00a0encountered security there, and finally ended up at the Dollar General where he committed his atrocity.<\/p>\n<p>Duval County Sheriff T. K. Waters does not think that the assailant intended to attack the HBCU:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Surveillance footage shows two young African American men getting into the car next to the suspect\u2019s as he was sitting in the lot, the sheriff noted. That bolsters Waters\u2019 belief that the gunman didn\u2019t intend to carry out an attack at the university, he said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cHe had the opportunity to do so, and he did not,\u201d Waters told CNN on Monday.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The shooter immediately started to drive away after being approached by a security officer, and he was followed until he left campus, Edward Waters University President and CEO A. Zachary Faison Jr. said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is where I disagree with the Sheriff. We have seen enough assailants target universities and colleges. I am skeptical that this man parked by a HBCU just to prepare and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Edward+Waters+University,+1658+Kings+Rd,+Jacksonville,+FL+32209\/Dollar+General,+Kings+Road,+Jacksonville,+FL\/@30.3464809,-81.6954061,16z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x88e5b75a79b10b6b:0x52dba8f2d880d673!2m2!1d-81.6836991!2d30.3436839!1m5!1m1!1s0x88e5b9fc6d196483:0xf6ae43c706e39e8c!2m2!1d-81.6960105!2d30.3491513?entry=ttu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drive two minutes down the street<\/a>\u00a0to a dollar store for his attack.<\/p>\n<p>Assailants love target-rich environments with unarmed targets. They are on a kamikaze mission, and all they want to do is take as many people as possible with them. That\u2019s why they avoid hard targets and go for softer ones instead. It\u2019s not much different from a thief who encounters two bicycles, one securely locked and another poorly secured, and goes for the \u201clow-hanging fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lesson learned here is to harden targets and for the people to be prepared. Statistically, public mass shootings by a stranger are exceedingly rare.
