Mike Parson spoke to KCUR&#8217;s Up To Date about the case of Kansas City Police officer Eric DeValkenaere, the expansion of I-70, the 2024 gubernatorial race, and Kansas City&#8217;s new gun ordinances.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"PCEP-articleContainer\">\n<div class=\"PCEP-articleBody\">\n<p>Criminal justice advocates across Kansas City have speculated that Gov. Mike Parson might pardon Eric DeValkenaere, the former Kansas City Police detective\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/news\/2023-09-05\/judges-question-white-kansas-city-officer-eric-devalkanaeres-defense-in-killing-cameron-lamb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who was convicted in 2021 for killing Cameron Lamb.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Parson told Up To Date&#8217;s Steve Kraske that he hasn&#8217;t sat down to discuss a potential pardon. He said that the legal process has to work out before he comes into play \u2014 DeValkenaere is currently appealing his conviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been unfortunate,\u201d Parson said of the speculation. \u201cI think a lot of people got spun up by that, elected officials up there are kinda claiming that. But the reality of it is that I haven\u2019t had a conversation about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parson also criticized the\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/news\/2023-08-10\/kansas-city-council-passes-2-gun-control-measures-to-mitigate-the-surge-in-homicides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new gun laws\u00a0<\/a>recently passed by Kansas City Council, outlawing certain modified firearms and prohibiting the transferring of weapons and ammo to minors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;You can&#8217;t supersede state law, just like I can&#8217;t supersede federal law. I wish I could sometimes, there&#8217;s lots of things I&#8217;d like to change,&#8221; Parson said. &#8220;The reality is that it needs to go in front of the General Assembly or needs to be voted on by the people to make those changes.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Parson signed into law the &#8220;Second Amendment Preservation Act,&#8221; which penalized law enforcement for enforcing federal gun restrictions.
