{"id":95846,"date":"2023-09-09T11:53:20","date_gmt":"2023-09-09T16:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95846"},"modified":"2023-09-09T11:53:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-09T16:53:20","slug":"95846","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95846","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/campusreform.org\/article?id=23932\">Students are entering college unable to write.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>K-12 public education has failed to prepare incoming college students how to write at the public level.<\/p>\n<p>In a desperate attempt to catch high school graduates up to speed, many universities are providing remedial writing classes to college students.<\/p>\n<p>About 68% of those starting at two-year public institutions and 40% of students enrolled in public four-year universities took at least one remedial writing class between 2003 to 2009, according to an original\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/pubs2016\/2016405.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Average math and reading test scores dropped significantly from 2019 to 2021, according to a 2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edworkingpapers.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ai22-521.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0by two Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). It seems likely that the 2016 figures would be much worse if they were resampled in 2023, after the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/research\/our-researchers\/megan-kuhfeld-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Megan Kuhfeld<\/a>, one of three NWEA study researchers, told\u00a0Campus Reform\u00a0Aug. 30 that \u201cIt seems likely but with two caveats: (a) the students in our study have not reached college yet so it is hard to extrapolate from middle school test results and (b) colleges may have changed their criteria for routing students into remedial courses as a results of the pandemic, which would also change the proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The remediation statistics from the NWEA study indicate that many incoming and current college students are not prepared for university-level coursework. As such, numerous institutions are offering remedial writing courses aimed at preparing incoming freshmen on how to write at the college level.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Empire State University\u2014which is part of the State University System of New York \u2014is providing a zero-credit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.esc.edu\/courses\/comw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">class<\/a>\u00a0for college students this academic year called \u201cPreparing for College Level Writing.\u201d The University of Florida offers a similar class, and according to the course catalog\u2019s description of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/writing.ufl.edu\/programs\/first-year-writing\/eng1001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ENG1001<\/a>, it is \u201cdesigned to help students develop basic college-level writing skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State University provides students with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reg.msu.edu\/Courses\/Search.aspx?CourseID=357807#Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list<\/a>\u00a0of several different options of \u201cPreparation for College Level Writing\u201d classes for the fall 2023 semester. The University of Cincinnati also offers students an optional\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uc.edu\/about\/continuing-ed\/test-prep\/college-essay-writing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workshop<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cCollege Essay Writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0Higher Education Fellow and Suffolk Community College Professor Nicholas Giordano weighed in on how he sees the trend reflected in his classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy classroom, along with many other college classrooms across the country, inevitably receive students who have been repeatedly cycled through the education system despite their lack of readiness for college-level coursework,\u201d Giordano said.<\/p>\n<p>Giordano also criticized K-12 education for failing to prepare students for higher education. \u201cThis is a shameful indictment on the K-12 public education system where the overwhelming majority of students are not performing at grade level,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Giordano also noted the contrast between the decrease in students\u2019 academic performance and the simultaneous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campusreform.org\/article?id=18467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rise in grade point averages<\/a>, calling it \u201csimply more evidence\u201d of standards being \u201croutinely lowered to cycle students through and create the illusion of success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Universities are not the only institutions that have to bear the cost of a failed K-12 public education system. According to a study from CollegeBoard, and as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/kaleigh-moore\/study-poor-writing-skills-are-costing-businesses-billions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by\u00a0Inc.<\/a>, businesses are spending nearly $3.1 billion every year on remedial writing training for employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that even a college degree doesn\u2019t save businesses from the effects of poor writing skills,\u201d the study claims.<\/p>\n<p><em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0contacted all universities mentioned, the other two NWEA researchers James Soland and Karyn Lewis.
