{"id":95889,"date":"2023-09-10T17:41:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-10T22:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95889"},"modified":"2023-09-10T17:41:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-10T22:41:16","slug":"95889","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=95889","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All the other &#8216;smith degrees offered by schools are 2 year associates<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/news\/2023\/09\/06\/murray-state-college-oklahoma-gunsmithing-bachelors-manufacturing-business\/70772011007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oklahoma school to offer nation&#8217;s first bachelor&#8217;s in gunsmithing<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">State officials could have a new weapon in their arsenal as they try to lure gun and ammunition manufacturers to Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Murray State College leaders say the school\u2019s gunsmithing program could become a huge economic development driver thanks to a $10 million legislative investment that will allow the college to offer the nation\u2019s first bachelor\u2019s degree in gunsmithing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">With backing from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, campus officials approached lawmakers in the spring with a pitch that expanding the school\u2019s gunsmithing program to offer four-year degrees could turn Oklahoma into a hub for gun businesses and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe idea was this is an investment in an industry that can locate in our state, and regionally, we have the ability distribution-wise to become a powerhouse in this,\u201d Murray State College President Tim Faltyn said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Although the funding measure passed overwhelmingly, some lawmakers questioned the new investment in a college that\u2019s located in the district of House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\"><strong>\u2018Major shift toward embracing modern technology\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Murray State College has offered a gunsmithing program since 1979. Annually, the school admits 30 students to its two-year degree program at its Tishomingo campus.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ok-oklahomacity-C6636-native-article_link-news-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"2\">By offering a bachelor\u2019s degree in gunsmithing, the college could admit more students and offer training on industry trends, campus officials said.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cGunsmithing is a very old profession, but we\u2019re seeing a major shift toward embracing modern technology,\u201d said Chad Mercer, Murray State\u2019s gunsmithing program chair. \u201cThe industry\u2019s been begging for students to come out of here with some higher, more technical knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The two-year program teaches students how to customize guns, in addition to the fundamentals of firearms design and repair. But Mercer said the bachelor\u2019s degree curriculum will be crafted with the needs of the firearms industry in mind as gun-makers are increasingly seeking graduates with digital skills in areas like 3-D printing and laser welding.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ok-oklahomacity-C6636-native-article_link-news-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"3\">Mercer\u2019s graduates are spread out across the firearms industry. Some alumni are working in small-town gun shops. Others have taken jobs working for the military, the federal government or custom firearm companies.<\/div>\n<div data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"3\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI can place 100% of my students if they\u2019re willing to move,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cThere\u2019s a demand out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">After graduating from Murray State\u2019s two-year program last year, Logan Hill, 27, accepted a full-time job at H&amp;H Shooting Sports in Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hill\u2019s friends convinced him to apply to the gunsmithing program after he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a human relations degree. Now, he splits his time helping customers in the gun shop and fixing and customizing patrons\u2019 firearms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He praised the hands-on training he received at Murray State, and said his enrollment in the program helped him get his foot in the door at H&amp;H, where he worked part time on the weekends during the school year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ok-oklahomacity-C6636-native-article_link-news-5\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI learned so much down there in just a short amount of time,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was 100% worth every minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Faltyn hopes recruiting additional firearm companies to Oklahoma\u00a0keep more program graduates close to home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/firearms\/docs\/report\/2021-firearms-commerce-report\/download\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">According to a 2021 report<\/a>\u00a0from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Oklahoma has 138 gun manufacturers \u2014 up from just 33 in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Oklahoma also has the 12th-highest rate of gun deaths, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/sosmap\/firearm_mortality\/firearm.htm\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">National Center for Health Statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The expansion of Murray State\u2019s program is expected to cost about $19 million. The college will use the $10 million in new state funding to build a 47,000-square-foot building for the program, which students will use in addition to the on-campus firing range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">College officials are soliciting donations for the remaining funding that will be used to hire three new gunsmithing instructors and purchase new equipment.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ok-oklahomacity-C6636-native-article_link-news-6\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"5\">Enrollment for the new program is expected to begin this fall, and students could start as soon as the spring semester.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">\u2018Boondoggle\u2019 or boon?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Details of the new degree program emerged in the final days of this year\u2019s regular legislative session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Rep. John Waldron, D-Tulsa, called the project a \u201cboondoggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe have a desperate need when it comes to higher education for nurses and teachers,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, why did we spend $10 million on a building with \u2026 tools? It seems like a misplaced priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">McCall, the House speaker, said the Legislature funded the new program after Murray State officials indicated it was important to grow their gunsmithing program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The $10 million in new funding for Murray State was included in a bill that contained funding for several other colleges and new programs, he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe bill received bipartisan support, and I was happy to see it pass as the majority of the House continued to support important funding for our state\u2019s institutions of higher learning,\u201d McCall said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Oklahoma Second Amendment Association President Don Spencer praised Murray State\u2019s gunsmithing program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But Spencer said the state\u2019s GOP-led Legislature needs to do more to recruit firearm manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThey need to get away from who\u2019s making batteries to who\u2019s making ammunition,\u201d Spencer said, referencing legislative efforts to recruit Panasonic to build a massive electric vehicle battery plant near Tulsa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Touting the more firearm-friendly laws, low cost of living and business friendly environment, Gov. Kevin Stitt and GOP lawmakers have tried to lure gun-makers and other firearm companies to Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cCommerce hopes that funding for programs like the gunsmithing program at Murray State will further our pro-business culture and efforts,\u201d said Becky Samples, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. \u201cCommerce is committed to supporting our higher education institutions and CareerTechs as they find innovative programs to equip tomorrow\u2019s talent with the skills needed to support companies looking to grow in Oklahoma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lawmakers in recent years introduced several bills aimed at attracting gun manufacturers to the state, but the legislation has stalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Those measures included a bill to grant tax credits to gun-makers and legislation that would prevent state contracts with companies that \u201cdiscriminate\u201d against firearm businesses or trade organizations like the National Rifle Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Stitt, a former businessman, has attended national gun shows to encourage firearm manufacturers to move to Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Several gun manufacturers in recent years have decided to move their operations from blue states to red states with more firearm-friendly policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Remington Firearms, the nation\u2019s oldest gun-maker, is relocating its headquarters from New York to Georgia. Smith &amp; Wesson Brands is moving its headquarters from Massachusetts to Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fear around guns,\u201d said Faltyn, the college president. \u201cWe want to be a national example of safe and responsible gun ownership and operation for the country because there\u2019s an industry there that\u2019s important.
