Grisham responds to backlash, ruling blocking her order<\/a><\/p>\n New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham had to know that she\u2019d get pushback with her declaration of a \u201cpublic health emergency\u201d regarding violent crime in Albuquerque and the subsequent order banning the lawful carry of firearms there.<\/p>\n I mean, it\u2019s a gun order. There\u2019s literally no way that she could be oblivious to the fact that a lot of people weren\u2019t going to like it.<\/p>\n However, Grisham got a lot more than she likely bargained for.<\/p>\n I mean, members of\u00a0her own party pushed back<\/a>. Then, on top of everything, a court issued\u00a0a restraining order stopping enforcement<\/a>\u00a0of the rule.<\/p>\n But Grisham isn\u2019t taking her lumps and learning from them. No,\u00a0she\u2019s trying to push back<\/a>.<\/p>\n The governor told \u201cGMA3\u201d earlier Wednesday she has the \u201ccourage\u201d to take a stand against gun violence<\/span>\u00a0in response to backlash<\/a>\u00a0over her emergency public health order.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEveryone is terrified of the backlash for all of these political reactions,\u201d Lujan Grisham told Eva Pilgrim on \u201cGMA3\u201d Wednesday. \u201cNone of those individuals or groups focused on the actual injuries or deaths of the public.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThey aren\u2019t dealing with this as the crisis that it is,\u201d she continued.\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHow would you feel in a city or a community if people had handguns in their belts, on parks, near schools, on public trails, at the grocery store?\u201d Lujan Grisham told \u201cGMA3.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s outrageous and it must stop. And I will keep doing everything that\u2019s based in science and fact and public safety efforts to clean up our cities to make this the safest state in America. And I will not stop until that\u2019s done.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The thing is, it\u2019s not the bad guys walking around openly carrying. Criminals\u00a0never<\/em>\u00a0open carry so far as I\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n If this is what Grisham is pushing then it\u2019s about theater, not safety. It\u2019s about giving the illusion of making things better. What\u2019s more, she knows it.<\/p>\n Of course, much of this is about responding to the pushback to her order.<\/p>\n She also had this to say following\u00a0the restraining order being issued<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAs governor, I see the pain of families who lost their loved ones to gun violence every single day, and I will never stop fighting to prevent other families from enduring these tragedies,\u201d Lujan Grisham said in the written statement.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOver the past four days, I\u2019ve seen more attention on resolving the crisis of gun violence than I have in the past four years,\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n No, she hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n What she\u2019s seen is her entire party\u2013at least those who spoke out\u2013calling her out for this blatantly unconstitutional action. Everyone has been telling her that she can\u2019t do what she\u2019s tried to do and now a federal court has done the same.<\/p>\n Grisham\u2019s problem is that she can\u2019t see beyond her own partisan blinders. She can\u2019t comprehend that there might possibly be ways to address violent crime in cities like Albuquerque that don\u2019t involve restricting people\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n Which is funny, because this whole \u201cpublic health crisis\u201d isn\u2019t just about restricting guns. Among other things, it calls for state police to go to Albuquerque to help crack down on violent crime in the city. It actually does do a few things that might well help all on its own, and they\u2019re far less controversial than trying to unilaterally restrict someone\u2019s basic, constitutionally protected rights.<\/p>\n Then again, so many anti-gun Democrats can\u2019t think beyond gun control for solutions to such issues.<\/p>\n And that\u2019s a problem since gun control doesn\u2019t really solve those issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Grisham responds to backlash, ruling blocking her order New Mexico Gov.
