Call it what you wish- spiritual,\u00a0 metaphysical -there <strong>are<\/strong> consequences here on Earth for what we do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/two-murdersand-the-cost-of-luxury\">TWO MURDERS\u2014AND THE COST OF LUXURY BELIEFS<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-topper \">\n<div class=\"c-topper__content\">\n<p class=\"c-topper__standfirst\">The death of two progressive activists shocked the nation. And that says everything about crime and class in America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-topper__standfirst\">Recently, two high-profile supporters of \u201cjustice reform\u201d were murdered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<article class=\"c-post post tag-show-pop-up tag-politics tag-culture tag-rob-henderson\">\n<div class=\"c-content \">\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">At 4 a.m. on Monday, Ryan Carson, a 32-year-old social justice and climate change activist, was walking with his girlfriend in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, when he was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/05\/suspect-18-arrested-for-random-stabbing-of-nyc-activist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stabbed to death<\/a>\u00a0by a stranger. Only a few hours earlier in Philadelphia, activist and journalist Josh Kruger was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/02\/us\/josh-kruger-death-philadelphia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot and killed<\/a>\u00a0in his home.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">And two Democratic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bills\/117\/hr1280\/cosponsors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/trial-over-killing-of-george-floyd\/2021\/04\/21\/989500468\/where-efforts-to-overhaul-policing-stand-in-congress-after-chauvin-verdict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted<\/a>\u00a0to \u201credirect funding to community-based policing reforms\u201d have been recent victims of violent crime.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">On Monday night, blocks away from the Capitol in Washington, D.C., Congressman Henry Cuellar was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/10\/02\/1203165609\/henry-cuellar-carjacked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carjacked<\/a>\u00a0by three armed men. (The lawmaker survived the incident unscathed.) In February, Angie Craig was attacked in an elevator at her apartment building in Capitol Hill. A homeless man demanded she allow him into her home to use the restroom, then he punched her and grabbed her around the neck. She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/man-attacked-us-rep-angie-craig-elevator-pleads-guilty-rcna87365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">escaped<\/a>\u00a0after throwing hot coffee on him.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Of course, these people did not deserve harm because of their support for soft-on-crime policies. But I\u2019ve long argued that many people who hold \u201cluxury beliefs\u201d\u2014ideas and opinions that confer status on the upper class, while often inflicting costs on the lower classes\u2014are oblivious to the consequences of their views. Support for defunding the police is a classic example.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Luxury beliefs can stem from malice, good intentions, or outright naivete.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\"><strong>But the individuals who hold those beliefs, the people who wield the most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667319321000215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">influence<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0257335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/isps.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/2018\/04\/qjps_2018_coppock_op-eds_100.00016112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture<\/a>, are often sheltered when their preferences are implemented.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<article class=\"c-post post tag-show-pop-up tag-politics tag-culture tag-rob-henderson\">\n<div class=\"c-content \">\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Some online commenters have said that my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.robkhenderson.com\/p\/status-symbols-and-the-struggle-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">luxury beliefs thesis<\/a>\u00a0is undermined by these tragic events, because the victims were affluent and influential\u2014and they still suffered the consequences of their beliefs.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">But the fact remains that poor people are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/v8_thp_10crimefacts.pdf#p=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">far more<\/a>\u00a0likely to be victims of violent crime. For every upper-middle-class person killed,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/library\/publications\/criminal-victimization-2009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 poor people<\/a>\u00a0you never hear about are assaulted and murdered. You just never hear about them. They don\u2019t get identified by name in the media. Their stories don\u2019t get told.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/hpnvv0812.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>, the poorest Americans are seven times more likely to be victims of robbery, seven times more likely to be victims of aggravated assault, and twenty times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than Americans who earn more than $75,000. One 2004 study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1093\/jurban\/jth152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that people in areas where over 20 percent of inhabitants live in poverty are more than 100 times more likely to be murdered than people in areas where less than 10 percent of residents live in poverty.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Expressing a luxury belief is a manifestation of cultural capital, a signal of one\u2019s fortunate economic circumstances. And we are living with the consequences of the elite\u2019s luxury beliefs when it comes to public safety and criminal justice. Indeed, the massive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisnation.com\/politics\/violent-crime-rises-sharply-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spike in violent crime<\/a>\u00a0across the U.S. is a reminder of the power of elite opinion.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/perspectives-on-politics\/article\/testing-theories-of-american-politics-elites-interest-groups-and-average-citizens\/62327F513959D0A304D4893B382B992B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0from 2014 found that strong support for a policy among the middle class has virtually no effect on whether that policy will be adopted. In contrast, strong support among Americans in the top income decile\u2014those who earn at least $173,000 a year\u2014doubles the probability that a policy will be adopted.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Who was most likely to champion the fashionable \u201cdefund the police\u201d cause in 2020 and 2021?<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">A nationwide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cdn.yougov.com\/86ijosd7cy\/20200611_yahoo_race_police_covid_crosstabs.pdf#p=100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a>\u00a0from YouGov found that Americans in the highest income category were by far the most supportive of defunding the police. Among Democratic voters, white Democrats were more likely to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/08\/the-very-bad-reason-white-democrats-want-to-defund-the-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support<\/a>\u00a0reducing police funding than black or Hispanic Democrats.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">In response to elite opinion in 2020, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Austin, and many other major cities in the U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/mar\/07\/us-cities-defund-police-transferring-money-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced<\/a>\u00a0police spending.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">Most people didn\u2019t want to defund the police, but the most affluent sector of society did. And so it was implemented.<\/p>\n<div class=\"captioned-image-container\" data-substack-content=\"\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"image2-inset\">\n<div>French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robkhenderson.com\/p\/status-symbols-and-the-struggle-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cdistance from necessity\u201d signals high social class. Similarly, in his book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/93116\/9780671792251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Class: A Guide Through the American Status System<\/a><\/em>, Paul Fussell points out that the presence of physical danger is a marker of low social class. For instance, among occupations, a big reason why being a diesel mechanic or an electric power line installer is considered working class\u2014while being a schoolteacher is middle class\u2014is that the former jobs are more dangerous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\"><strong>The vast majority of educated people have never been in a real fight or experienced serious physical injury. On occasion, I\u2019ve wondered if this is why many of them believe words are \u201cviolence.\u201d<\/strong> They have never known serious physical pain. I recently spoke with an editor at a prestigious magazine who explained how shocked he was to learn from Tara Westover\u2019s memoir\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/93116\/9780399590528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Educated<\/a><\/em>\u00a0how frequently people who work in junkyards experience cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns. Physical pain\u2014even bodily soreness\u2014was just not a reality in this person\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p data-substack-content=\"\">I had a professor in college who liked to say that common sense is like air: the higher you go, the thinner it gets. Sadly, it will probably take more high-profile deaths and attacks for people to wake up. When a bunch of peasants are killed, the luxury belief class shrugs. But when the nobility and petty nobility are targeted, the narrative shifts.<strong><em> It\u2019s only when those in positions of influence and privilege feel the consequences of their beliefs and policies that real change is seriously considered.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m sorry, I hold no compassion for them.
