{"id":96810,"date":"2023-10-14T11:13:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-14T16:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=96810"},"modified":"2023-10-14T11:13:56","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T16:13:56","slug":"96810","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=96810","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2023\/10\/14\/gen-z-gun-n76023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Guardian<\/em> floored that Gen Z isn&#8217;t more anti-gun<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a member of Gen X, I look at the younger generation as they\u2019re portrayed in the media and have concerns. Luckily, I know that generations aren\u2019t monolithic. Just as the Baby Boomers weren\u2019t universally hippies and my generation wasn\u2019t all building dot com businesses.<\/p>\n<p>With Gen Z, I expect much the same.<\/p>\n<p>So what does this have to do with guns? Well, it seems The Guardian is floored that a generation that has dealt with mass shootings\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/oct\/13\/gen-z-gun-violence-trauma-ownership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">isn\u2019t completely freaked out over guns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the US, Gen Z grew up doing active shooter drills and watching school massacres and other acts of violence unfold on TV. So it\u2019s perhaps unsurprising that many of them have been high-profile faces in the movement for gun reform. But at the same time, research shows many young people, like those Alvarado works with, remain open to \u2013 even interested in \u2013 gun ownership. What connects those two threads, experts say, is shared trauma and exposure to violence&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While one response to that sense of dread has been to join the gun violence prevention movement, another is to embrace firearms. The<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/peril-youth-attitudes-guns-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">2023 Peril<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">study showed that about one-third of youth under 18 believe they are safer with guns than without them. 39% of participants reported having easy access to a gun, and about half of those answers were from young people who purchased a firearm themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/60e993a094dc0f2fa15fff35\/t\/61de08b97bb56966255f5af3\/1641941178235\/InfluenceSG_KeyFindingsDoc_2022_Rev3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">another study<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">from 2019, 42% of boys and men ages 13-21 reported they will likely own a gun in the future, while 76% of all respondents agreed that gun ownership makes a home safer. And between 2002 and 2019,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/number-teens-carry-guns-rose-sharply-last-two-decades-rcna25931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">rates of gun ownership among teens rose by 41%<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the pandemic, one-third of people who purchased guns were between 18 and 29 years old.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These swings coincide with rising ownership among demographics not historically linked to firearms, like women<\/span>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/aug\/07\/latino-texas-guns-owners#:~:text=Across%20the%20United%20States,Foundation%2C%20a%20firearms%20trade%20association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Latinos<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/aug\/16\/asian-americans-gun-ownership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Asian Americans<\/a>. I<span style=\"color: #000000;\">n the latter two groups, new gun owners say that they are motivated to carry by the increased threat of racist extremism.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGun ownership has diversified dramatically,\u201d said Kelly Drane, research director at Giffords Law Center in San Francisco.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Of course, many on the anti-gun side simply cannot fathom the idea that people might actually embrace gun rights to any degree, especially in the face of threats of violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The thing is, though, that\u2019s not an irrational response to trauma as many people think. It\u2019s completely rational.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z understands that violence is an unfortunate part of our lives, which means that it\u2019s not going to go away with platitudes and protests. Sure, we can do that, but we also need to face the fact that gun control doesn\u2019t make criminals stop doing bad things.<\/p>\n<p>If you believe someone wants to hurt you, it\u2019s completely rational to want to be able to use violence in an effort to defend yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m actually glad see Gen Z stand up for defending themselves.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019m not glad to see is the gaslighting, an attempt to pretend that it\u2019s not that they see the world as it is and is instead a trauma response.<\/p>\n<p>Rationality is traumatizing, apparently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guardian floored that Gen Z isn&#8217;t more anti-gun As a member of Gen X, I look at the younger generation as they\u2019re portrayed in the media and have concerns.
