Anti-Gunners Offer Surface-Level Takes On Shootings<\/a><\/p>\n

Right now, a lot of attention is focused on Lewiston, Maine, and for a pretty good reason. When 18 people are killed and another 13 injured, folks are going to notice and talk about it.<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
\n

I don\u2019t have an issue with that, even if I also know a lot of people are just going to regurgitate anti-gun talking points.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But there were a number of other shootings that didn\u2019t quite rise to the level of \u201cmass shooting\u201d as most of us think of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet the anti-gunners are still going to\u00a0<\/span>offer surface-level takes<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

On the heels of Maine officials\u00a0<\/span>confirming<\/span>\u00a0that the shooter who\u00a0<\/span>killed<\/span>\u00a018 people in Lewiston earlier this week was found dead, shootings in Florida, Illinois, and Indianapolis early Sunday fueled further calls for action by U.S. lawmakers to reduce gun violence.<\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in a statement: \u201cThis morning, we are waking up to news of another deadly shooting. Our communities are exhausted\u2026 My heart breaks for the victims\u2019 families whose children did not make it home, for the people who were injured in the gunfire, and hundreds of others who ran for their lives in Ybor City last night.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGuns turned this night out into a nightmare,\u201d she added. \u201cHow many more times do we have to wipe the blood off our streets before action is taken? Once again, we urge Congress to do their jobs and pass responsible gun laws to protect all Americans from gun violence.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts\u00a0<\/span>called<\/span>\u00a0the incident \u201cthe logical outcome of Florida\u2019s permitless carry law, which went into effect in July\u201d and means that \u201ccivilians no longer have to have background checks or training to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Kris Brown, president of the gun violence prevention group Brady,\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>e<\/span>clared<\/span>\u00a0in response to the violence in Tampa that \u201cthis isn\u2019t normal and we don\u2019t have to live this way,\u201d highlighting that the U.S. gun homicide rate is\u00a0<\/span>26 times<\/span>\u00a0that of peer nations.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s amusing, in a dark way, because they\u2019re completely ignoring the fact that one of these shootings happened in gun-controlled Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, there\u2019s absolutely no evidence that permitless carry had anything at all to do with what happened in Florida or in Indiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Unsurprisingly, all the shootings are being used to justify an assault weapon ban, but I don\u2019t actually see any evidence that such a weapon was used.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then again, what do anti-gunners need with evidence?<\/span><\/p>\n

See, in all of these cases, all they see is that a gun was used. They\u2019re not looking at the multiple stabbings or beatings that occurred during this time period. Granted, many of those didn\u2019t result in quite as much bloodshed, but\u00a0<\/span>it has happened before<\/span><\/a>\u00a0where it did.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, if challenged, these anti-gun voices will claim the only common denominator is the gun, but that\u2019s wrong. It looks right but only because you\u2019ve decide to only pick instance where that is\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span><\/em>\u00a0common denominator and excluded everything else.<\/span><\/p>\n

The common denominator in all mass killings? People.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a person who is trying to hurt others. The anti-gun side always ignores this aspect and instead thinks that if you take away their guns then they\u2019ll somehow become peaceful, law-abiding citizens. That\u2019s delusional to the extreme.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet these surface-level takes in the wake of mass shootings, even by Gun Violence Archive definitions, don\u2019t actually accomplish a thing. Then again, all they\u2019re meant to accomplish is to take our guns away. When they\u2019ve gotten our AR-15s and AKs and FALs and other such weapons, then they\u2019ll start focusing on something else, probably our handguns.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re not interested in resolving crime. If they were, they\u2019d at least pretend to be interested in addressing the root causes of it, yet that\u2019s never even looked at by the anti-gun crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, doing that is tough and would require more effort than what we\u2019ve currently seen out of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
