Thomas Massie \u201ctweeted\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday. \u201cMy amendment to defund that unconstitutional mandate failed tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-17\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1671218810065-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cHere is the roll call,\u201d Massie added, linking to the House Clerk\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2023\/roll616.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"ca0bd2bd9a28178b44740186bd6abd64\">Final Vote Results<\/a>\u201d for his Part B Amendment No. 60 to H R 4820, the \u201cTransportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2024.\u201d<strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em> 19 Republicans<\/em><\/span> joined 210 Democrats to defeat Massie\u2019s amendment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Gus Bilirakis (FL), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Mike Carey (OH), Chuck Fleischmann (TN), Andrew Garbarino (NY), Mike Garcia (CA), Garret Graves (LA), John Joyce (PA), Thomas Kean, Jr. (NJ), Kevin Kiley (CA), Young Kim (CA), David Kustoff (TN), Mike Lawler (NY), Nancy Mace (SC), Michael McCaul (TX), Zach Nunn (IA), Mar\u00eda Elvira Salazar (FL), Chris Smith (NJ), and Glenn Thompson (PA).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Still, this must be a tempest in a teapot, right? After all, didn\u2019t a January\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2023\/01\/19\/fact-check-false-claim-bill-mandates-kill-switch-cars-police-drunk-driving\/11066287002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"9608a9aa18a020283dd238dbb7c9fec5\"><em>USA Today<\/em>\u00a0Fact Check<\/a>\u00a0conclude, \u201cNo, there\u2019s no vehicle \u2018kill switch\u2019 in Biden\u2019s 2021 infrastructure bill\u201d? And it then followed up that headline with denial after denial until buried near the end of the piece came a curious admission:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhether or not the technology will become a part of the infrastructure bill\u2019s final rule remains to be seen\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Massie followed up his tweet by addressing the\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em>\u00a0denials with a copy of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-09\/IIJA-%20Pub%20Law%20117-58%20Nov%2015%202021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"28ec0b57cf5941e7ac0ae7c8c5428357\">Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act<\/a>\u00a0with an entry in the \u201cDefinitions\u201d section circled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The term \u201cadvanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology means a system that \u2026 can \u2026 passively monitor the performance of the driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired; and\u2026 prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1681151438500-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CLKKlvSluoIDFWgoswAdaRkIPQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22702991301\/Ammoland\/AL_In-Content_2_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"AmmolandDFPAdParallaxerCont_138452137711\">\n<div>\n<div>The wording implies that starting the car requires more than just a breathalyzer ignition interlock.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Besides, the technology to remotely disable cars has been in development for years.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/ibm-applies-for-right-to-stop-your-car-at-intersections-week-after-researchers-hack-car\/news-story\/1959455e88234f9d3deefe914a6d468a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"472181c6d0f5f865455f771bea9c819e\">From a 2010 report<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>\u201cIf you\u2019re crawling through traffic in 2025 and approach a traffic light, IBM hopes it will be able to take control of your car. And according to the patent, you won\u2019t be able to go again until it lets you. \u2026With a laptop and <\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>customized<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>\u00a0software called CarShark, the researchers disabled the brakes of a regular family car and switched its engine off \u2013 while it was moving.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And to show the incremental moves in development:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cIn 2008, it became mandatory for all American cars to be fitted with CAN (Controller Area Network), a standard protocol for enabling all the car\u2019s electronics to talk to each other, so there\u2019s one part of the puzzle in place.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>OK, fine, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoland.com\/2022\/09\/denver-thermostat-control-lockout-shows-smart-device-exploits-can-endanger-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"b37d56aa11e0140895177e541e3021d3\">what does any of this have to do with guns<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1681151478485-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CLOKlvSluoIDFWgoswAdaRkIPQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22702991301\/Ammoland\/AL_In-Content_3_0__container__\">Some of us have been raising this warning flag for as long as we\u2019ve been warning people about so-called \u201csmart guns.\u201d From \u201cThings to Come,\u201d a <em>Guns and Ammo<\/em>\u00a0article I wrote in 2002:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But perhaps the most immediate and insidious threat we face from technology comes under the guise of \u201csafety\u2014 for the children,\u201d so-called \u201csmart guns\u201d under development and soon to be required in a state near you. Because\u2026they\u2019re also lobbying for another technology they developed to be required on cars\u2014 a \u201cshutoff switch\u201d that police can activate by remote control, making the rest of us pay for the infinitesimal fraction of drivers who lead them on car chases.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As writer Vin Suprynowicz warns (and I and some others independently predicted), this technology could be used by the police as \u201can `electronic master key\u2019 to `disable\u2019 any `smart guns\u2019 in the house,\u201d and be used as a pretext to \u201cban the manufacture of any gun that ISN\u2019T a `smart gun\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So police can turn guns fitted with one \u201coff\u201d and incapable of firing\u2014and that could be mandated. Anybody doubt it will be if remote shutoff technology becomes widespread?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But the legal landscape has changed, some may argue. Such a move would surely fail under the\u00a0<em>Heller<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Bruen<\/em>\u00a0tests. No?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, look at the \u201crules\u201d that ATF and edicts Democrat strongholds have passed that are obviously nothing more than in-your-face challenges to the Supreme Court on devices, semi-autos, magazines, \u201csensitive areas,\u201d prior restraints and denials of due process\u2014look at how they have virtually unlimited war chests of tax plunder to drag complaints on for years. Then pray the Republicans don\u2019t blow it in \u201924 and enable a Democrat president and majority to alter the composition of the court and achieve whatever reversals and outcomes they desire.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the list of Republicans who voted against Massie\u2019s amendment, and there are enough that they could have turned it: We see some familiar names, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoland.com\/2023\/02\/bipartisan-gun-controller-fitzpatrick-shows-why-being-republican-is-not-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"f005e741b49f9276bb9470e0d33ecfbd\">Brian Fitzpatrick<\/a>, Giffords\u2019 poster Vichycon who never saw a gun he didn\u2019t want to grab. We see others, like Gus Bilirakis, assigned an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrapvf.org\/emails\/2020\/florida\/gus-bilirakis-fl-12-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uri=\"8121efec92dbc66e77fd123c58e8d811\">A-rating by NRA-PVF<\/a>\u00a0along with the assurance that he\u2019s \u201ca staunch defender of the Second Amendment and has earned your vote by protecting your fundamental right to self-defense from those who attempt to eradicate it!\u201d Then there are the \u201cmoderates\u201d from states like New York and California whose endless \u201ccompromises in the spirit of bipartisanship\u201d exemplify the reason why so many refer to the GOP as \u201cthe Stupid Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you see your representative siding with the Democrats (or is one of the five Republicans who did not vote), what would it hurt to take the amount of time it takes to post a comment here and contact them to ask, \u201cWhat the hell?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If past history is any indicator, a reprogramming of car computer software for this will just be added on the list of services hackers have.
