William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate created the organization after they were &#8220;dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops,&#8221; states the NRA in its online history.<\/p>\n<p>The association was determined to &#8220;promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis,&#8221; Church wrote in a contemporary magazine editorial, the NRA reports.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-da\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" tabindex=\"0\" data-entity-id=\"Ambrose_Burnside\" data-ylk=\"cid:Ambrose_Burnside;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\"><a class=\"link \" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Ambrose%20Burnside\" data-i13n=\"cid:Ambrose_Burnside;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ambrose Burnside;cid:Ambrose_Burnside;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">Ambrose Burnside<\/a><\/span>\u00a0was the first president of the fledging organization.<\/p>\n<p>General Burnside led federal troops in many of the early encounters of\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/meet-american-wrote-ben-hur-tale-christ-lew-wallace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Civil War;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"17\" data-v9y=\"1\">the Civil War<\/a>. Undated photograph by William Brady.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several other Union officers shaped the NRA during their stints as president of the organization in its earliest years.<\/p>\n<p>Among them: General Alexander Shaler, who earned the Medal of Honor for heroics at the Second Battle of Fredericksburg; General Winfield Scott Hancock, whose troops repelled Pickett&#8217;s Charge in the dramatic final encounter of the Battle of Gettysburg; and the Union&#8217;s greatest officer, Ulysses S. Grant, who led the NRA in 1883 and 1884 after serving two terms as\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/elections\/presidential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:president of the United States;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"20\" data-v9y=\"0\">president of the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 5.5 million Americans from all walks of life and political persuasions are members of the National Rifle Association today.<\/p>\n<p>The organization&#8217;s very first efforts included building a rifle range to promote marksmanship. The NRA&#8217;s original 1872 range on Long Island, New York, was moved to New Jersey in 1892.<\/p>\n<p>The first National Rifle Matches were held at a new and larger range\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/midwest\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:in Camp Perry, Ohio,;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"1\">in Camp Perry, Ohio,<\/a>\u00a0in 1907.<\/p>\n<p>The matches are still held at Camp Perry today, attracting nearly 6,000 competitive shooters each year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\">\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/FVL4iylt0tLBnKefBl8MpQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTIwNDg7aD0xMzY2O2NmPXdlYnA-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/fox_news_text_979\/0197dbd6d9c472b89c7e390594db7cee\">Students from the Osage High School trap team compete in a trapshooting match at the Mitchell County Trap Range on May 5, 2018, in Osage, Iowa. Jones urged the establishment of rifle clubs at all major colleges, universities and military academies,&#8221; the association writes of its history.<\/p>\n<p>Rifle and shooting clubs are still an active part of high school and university life in many parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/midwest\/minnesota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Minnesota State High School;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"0\">Minnesota State High School<\/a>\u00a0Trap Shooting Championship expects 7,900 student competitors from 340 high schools to compete in its 2023 competition; it&#8217;s dubbed &#8220;the world&#8217;s largest shooting sport event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gun ownership was widely accepted as a part of life throughout most of the nation&#8217;s history. But in recent decades, attitudes toward firearms changed dramatically.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\">\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/bounpKn4oq9nbg1xHKkm9g--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTI0MDA7aD0xNTk4O2NmPXdlYnA-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/fox_news_text_979\/d17ff9678634e28bf58940f36c1725a5\">The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that &#8220;the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/personal-freedoms\/second-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Second Amendment has become;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"27\" data-v9y=\"0\">Second Amendment has become<\/a>\u00a0the target of ever-increasing efforts to undermine the authority of the U.S. Constitution and to deny Americans their &#8220;right to keep and bear arms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The organization itself has become a high-profile scapegoat for wider social ills, including issues such as mental health.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, New York attorney general Letitia James filed a lawsuit in an effort to break up the NRA. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Joel Cohen tossed that claim in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dissolving the NRA could impinge, at least indirectly, on the free speech and assembly rights of its millions of members,&#8221; the judge stated.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (now senator-elect Fetterman) called NRA members &#8220;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/john-fetterman-nra-members-lunatic-fringe-gun-ownership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:the lunatic fringe;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"28\" data-v9y=\"1\">the lunatic fringe<\/a>\u00a0of gun ownership&#8221; in an April 2022 speech.<\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Board of Supervisors called the NRA a &#8220;domestic terrorist organization&#8221; in a 2019 resolution \u2014 which the NRA derided as a &#8220;ludicrous stunt&#8221; by a city that coddles criminals at the expense of law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA responded to challenges such as these in recent decades by becoming increasingly involved in legal, lobbying and legislative activity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\">\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/XeLoqL_87QL3OkpBmTz3XA--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTI0MDA7aD0xMzUwO2NmPXdlYnA-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/fox_news_text_979\/06428e2b1e716e538096603846d4affa\">The association created the Institute for Legislative Action in 1975 to provide legal and political defense of the Second Amendment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Gun safety and marksmanship remain the core of the NRA&#8217;s mission, the organization says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In civilian training, the NRA continues to be the leader in firearms education.
