Incompetent \u2018Contagious Disease\u2019 Diagnosis for Guns a Prescription for Tyranny<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cNew Mexico Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham held a recent press conference to praise herself for implementing dubious gun control measures,\u201d the\u00a0National Shooting Sports Foundation reported<\/a>. \u201c\u2018I won\u2019t rest until we don\u2019t have to talk about (gun violence) as an epidemic and a public health emergency,\u2019 the governor said.\u201d<\/p>\n

If a prominent politician declares an epidemic and imposes edicts and orders to enforce them, it\u2019s fair to ask, \u201cWhere\u2019s the science?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLujan Grisham was born in Los Alamos and graduated from St. Michael\u2019s High School in Santa Fe before earning undergraduate and law degrees from the University of New Mexico,\u201d the\u00a0governor\u2019s official biography<\/a>\u00a0states. Neither her education nor her claimed career highlights show her qualified to make such a proclamation on her own, which makes it fair to ask, \u201cWho\u2019s advising her?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That would be Patrick M. Allen, her New Mexico Health Department Secretary.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn simple terms, violence, especially gun violence, behaves like a contagious disease,\u201d Allen\u00a0<\/span>pontificates in his op-ed<\/a>, \u201cTackling Gun Violence: A Public Health Challenge \u2014 DOH secretary says rapidly-spreading violence behaves like a contagious disease.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cImagine treating violence as if it were an infectious disease. Just as we study diseases\u2019 origins to combat them effectively, we can apply the same approach to violence,\u201d Allen proclaims. \u201cHow do we address gun violence as the contagious disease it is? Gun violence is a public health emergency.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He sounds like he knows what he\u2019s talking about, doesn\u2019t he? The thing is, like the governor, the secretary in charge of the Land of Enchantment\u2019s public health doesn\u2019t have a qualified medical background, either.<\/strong><\/p>\n

True, his LinkedIn profile<\/a>\u00a0shows he\u2019s been an administrator and a bureaucratic policy wonk, but when it comes to \u201cEducation,\u201d he\u2019s only claiming a B.S. in Economics from Oregon State University. So, when it comes to diagnosis and treatment, we haven\u2019t even established a proficiency at changing bed pans, emphasized by\u00a0the requirements for his degree<\/a>: Essentially, get a \u201cC\u201d average on 51 credits.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We\u2019re still not seeing much to justify declaring a public health emergency, are we?<\/p>\n

OK, so where does Allen get his parroted talking points from? That\u2019s assuming his concurrence with them is relevant, competent, and material. And talking points they are, as a cursory\u00a0Google search shows<\/a>. The media\u2019s all over it.<\/p>\n

The big gun there appears to be one Gary Slutkin, M.D., of \u201cThe University of Illinois at Chicago, and Cure Violence (formerly CeaseFire).\u201d No \u201cagenda science\u201d bias there, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cVIOLENCE IS A CONTAGIOUS DISEASE<\/a>,\u201d Slutkin\u2019s headline screams in his National Library of Medicine \u201cContagion of Violence\u201d workshop summary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe begin by reminding ourselves that the great infectious diseases and violence have each killed tens to hundreds of millions of persons throughout history. Nothing else has caused this level of human fatalities,\u201d Slutkin recalls for us. \u201cViolence has all of the historical, population, and individual characteristics of an infectious disease. It has routes of transmission, incubation periods, and different clinical syndromes and outcomes. There are definable biological processes underlying the pathogenesis.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, if someone else does it you can catch it? What\u2019s the agent of transmission, and how does it enter the body? Can we vaccinate against it? With the estimated \u201cmore than 494 million firearms<\/a>\u00a0[that] have been produced for the U.S. market since 1899, includ[ing] imports from foreign gunmakers, but exclud[ing] exports by domestic gunmakers,\u201d shouldn\u2019t we all be in our beds or wearing face diapers or something? And the \u201csolution\u201d is citizen disarmament enforced by a government monopoly of violence?<\/p>\n

So, we\u2019re to accept that governments \u2013 the\u00a0historic perpetrators of genocides<\/a>\u00a0against unarmed populations, carry some kind of natural immunity? That\u2019s our healthy choice\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n

But Slutkin\u2019s a doctor, some may counter. He did better than a bachelor\u2019s degree with a 2.0. Who are we mere mortals (and being gun owners, probably deplorable knuckle-draggers, Trumptards, and white supremacists to boot) to argue with him?<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t have to. Aside from common sense and life experience that tells us the gun quacks are selling Professor Bloomberg\u2019s Miracle Cure snake oil, we have our resources to consult, too. Some of my proven reliable go-tos are Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership<\/a>, and a personal favorite, \u201cThe Perversion of Science and Medicine<\/a>\u201d by Miguel A. Faria, Jr., M.D., \u201ca consultant neurosurgeon, Adjunct Professor of Medical History (1993-1996) at Mercer University School of Medicine\u2026 [who served] as Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Sentinel, the official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS).\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Now is a good time to recall that Grisham, with Allen\u2019s \u201ccorroboration,\u201d justified her totalitarian impulses by classifying \u201cgun violence as an epidemic.\u201d It\u2019s also a good time to ask, \u201cWhat is an epidemic?\u201d which the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health does, both for us and for their medical postal carriers [just seeing who\u2019s still awake], by\u00a0citing the Centers for Disease Control<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201c(CDC) describes an epidemic as an unexpected increase in the number of disease cases in a specific geographical area\u2026 Epidemics can refer to a disease or other specific health-related behavior \u2026 with rates that are clearly above the expected occurrence\u00a0in a community or region<\/em>\u00a0[emphasis added].<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That actually comports nicely with\u00a0the findings of Dr. John Lott<\/a>\u00a0(a\u00a0real economist<\/a><\/em>, Patrick), and president of the Crime Preventios Research Center, who documents:<\/p>\n

\u201cMurder isn\u2019t a nationwide problem. It\u2019s a problem in a small set of urban areas, and even in those counties, murders are concentrated in small areas inside them\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Disarming you and me will not affect those concentrated areas. It will, however, make us more vulnerable to criminals, predators, violent lunatics, and assorted control freaks and evil aberrations who come into ours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the estimated four-in-10 U.S. households that own a gun were susceptible to the \u201cdisease\u201d the freedom prohibitionists insist we\u2019re all at risk of being infected with, they\u2019d know it with all their in-your-face provocations that would have had the Founders who ratified the Second Amendment responding with \u201cevery terrible implement of the soldier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The evil, collectivist morons are pushing worse than junk science. \u00a0It\u2019s clown science.<\/p>\n
