Bill Gates: AI Will Save \u2018Democracy,\u2019 Make \u2018Humans Get Along With Each Other\u2019 & \u2018Be Less Polarized\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has suggested that he hopes artificial intelligence (AI) will dictate how \u201chumans\u201d behave toward one another.<\/p>\n

According to Gates, powerful AI technology will \u201chelp\u201d society to \u201cbe less polarized.\u201d\u00a0Gates believes allowing the human race to have different opinions regarding politics and society is a \u201csuper-bad thing\u201d because it \u201cbreaks democracy.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In a Thursday podcast discussion with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Gates said that AI can fix these alleged problems by making \u201chumans\u201d \u201cget along with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gates also expressed his vision of how AI could lead to increased world peace and social cohesion in an ideal world in the episode of \u201cUnconfuse Me with Bill Gates\u201d\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0to GatesNotes, the billionaire\u2019s blog website.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Microsoft briefly\u00a0usurped Apple to become the world\u2019s biggest company by market value.\u00a0The company\u2019s soaring value is due to the boom in artificial intelligence, which has given a massive boost to Microsoft.<\/p>\n

The software company\u2019s shares climbed around 1 percent in early trading on Thursday to take its market value to $2.87tn, just ahead of the iPhone maker, whose shares fell by almost 1 percent.<\/p>\n

Both Microsoft and\u00a0OpenAI, along with their main figureheads, have been involved in AI regulatory talks with the\u00a0White House<\/a>,\u00a0senators<\/a>, and\u00a0world leaders<\/a>. \u201cI do think AI, in the best case, can help us with some hard problems,\u201d Gates stated.\u00a0\u201cIncluding polarization because potentially that breaks democracy and that would be a super-bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the podcast, Gates and Altman also discussed the potential for AI to establish world peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether AI can help us go to war less, be less polarized; you\u2019d think as you drive intelligence, and not being polarized kind of is common sense, and not having war is common sense, but I do think a lot of people would be skeptical,\u201d Gates said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019d love to have people working on the hardest human problems, like whether we get along with each other. I think that would be extremely positive if we thought the AI could contribute to humans getting along with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that it will surprise us on the upside there,\u201d Altman responded.\u00a0\u201cThe technology will surprise us with how much it can do. We\u2019ve got to find out and see, but I\u2019m very optimistic. I agree with you, what a contribution that would be.\u201d<\/p>\n
