{"id":99328,"date":"2024-01-16T19:30:58","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T01:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=99328"},"modified":"2024-01-16T19:30:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T01:30:58","slug":"99328","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=99328","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.printfriendly.com\/p\/g\/44kydK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Truth Behind &#8216;Assault Rifles&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">On any given day, you won\u2019t be surprised to see some lawmaker calling for an assault weapon ban as part of some effort\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2024\/01\/13\/gun-violence-wont-n79349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-pf_style_display=\"inline\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">they\u2019re trying to sell<\/a>\u00a0as a way to reduce violent crime.<\/p>\n<p data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">Of course, most of these people don\u2019t know what an assault rifle is.<\/p>\n<p data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">If you noticed the difference in those terms, you\u2019re a gun person. An assault rifle and an assault weapon, as people try to define them, are very different. One is already banned and the other just looks similar to the other, which makes way too many people nervous, apparently.<\/p>\n<div class=\"thm-piano-mop-premium pf-candidate\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">\n<p data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">But these difference are often ignored, all because\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2024\/01\/14\/assault-rifle-is-a-real-term-but-is-misused-to-spark-fear-in-gun-control-debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-pf_style_display=\"inline\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">some want people scared<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Are \u201cassault rifles\u201d even a real thing?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Yes, but frequently not in the way that the term, or the slight variance of it, is used in debates over gun control, a Wyoming firearms policy expert said.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">The term \u201cassault weapons\u201d in the popular or politicized context dates back to the 1980s as an attempt to evoke public fear and \u201creinvent the gun control movement,\u201d George Mocsary told Cowboy State Daily.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Moscary is a professor of law at the University of Wyoming and director of UW\u2019s Firearms Research Center.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Military Vs. Civilian<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">\u201cAssault rifle\u201d has a specific meaning in the military context, Mocsary said. It dates back to World War II, and is said to have been coined by none other than Adolf Hitler.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">In military contexts, \u201cassault rifle\u201d refers to an infantry weapon that has three basic characteristics. First, it\u2019s fed by high-capacity, detachable ammunition magazines. Second, it\u2019s chambered for a mid-sized cartridge: larger than the ammunition for pistols and submachine guns, but smaller than cartridges for battle rifle or machine guns.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Also, the weapon features a selective fire switch. That means it can be toggled between semi-automatic fire (one shot per pull of the trigger) and fully automatic fire (once the trigger is pulled, it fires rapidly until the trigger is released or the ammunition runs out).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\">Some more modern military weapons also have \u201cburst fire,\u201d meaning about three shots are fired for every pull of the trigger.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Now, that last bit is why \u201cassault rifles\u201d are essentially banned. There are a few that were in civilian hands prior to 1986 and are thus available for purchase today, but not a whole lot of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Yet somewhere along the way, the term \u201cassault\u00a0<\/span><em data-pf_style_display=\"inline\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">weapon<\/span><\/em><span class=\"text-node\">\u201d came into being, and Moscary has commentary on how and why that happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\">\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The term \u201cassault weapon\u201d entered popular discourse in the 1980s, Mocsary said. And he contends that it was introduced deliberately in favor of more gun control.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">A 2017 paper that he co-authored quotes a gun control advocate as pushing for the use of the term. A passage titled \u201c\u2019Assault Weapons\u2019 \u2013 the Quintessential Demonization Campaign\u201d argues that the term was introduced to shift the focus from handguns to semi-automatic rifles.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cIn the mid-1980s, Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center found that neither Americans nor the media were interested in banning handguns,\u201d the paper states.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Sugarmann is quoted in the paper as having said: \u201cAssault weapons \u2014 just like armor-piercing bullets, machine guns, and plastic firearms \u2014 are a new topic. The weapons\u2019 menacing looks, coupled with the public\u2019s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons \u2014 anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun \u2014 can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0 added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><strong><span class=\"text-node\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Mocsary said that proves the term \u201cassault weapon\u201d was designed to muddy the gun control debate.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Of course, absolutely no one reading this is going to be shocked by this revelation. We always knew the term \u201cassault weapon\u201d was being thrown around simply to make these guns sound far scarier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Especially because it equates assault\u00a0<\/span><em data-pf_style_display=\"inline\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">rifles<\/span><\/em><span class=\"text-node\">\u00a0with assault\u00a0<\/span><em data-pf_style_display=\"inline\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">weapons<\/span><\/em><span class=\"text-node\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">In a lot of cases, \u201crifle\u201d and \u201cweapon\u201d can be used almost interchangeably\u2013all rifles are weapons, after all, even if all weapons aren\u2019t necessarily rifles\u2013which only makes it easier those trying to muddy the waters in the gun debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Yet here\u2019s the thing we all need to consider. If their cause were righteous enough and backed by all the research and common sense anti-gunners claim, why would they need to resort to rhetorical tricks to get people to support banning these firearms in the first place?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Especially since assault rifles are already banned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">But anti-gunners simply want to ban as many kinds of firearms as they can. They\u2019ll use existing bans to try and get new ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">The push against \u201cassault weapons\u201d had nothing to do with how supposedly dangerous these weapons are but instead had everything to do with the fact that they were legal and could be framed to be terrifying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">\u201cBut, Tom, mass shooters use these all the time!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1 pf-delete\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">No, they really don\u2019t. Most mass shooters use handguns, which no one has any interest in banning anymore. While some might use a modern sporting rifles\u2013none have used actual assault rifles so far as I can recall\u2013the question that\u2019s not being asked is how those individuals decided on those particular weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">I can\u2019t help but figure that all the doom-and-gloom reporting on just how terrible these firearms actually are may have pushed many of these shooters to pick a modern sporting rifle over, say, a handgun. At least at first\u2013and the media hysteria after shootings where they were used certainly hasn\u2019t helped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">But no one is actually asking the question of surviving shooters, so we have nothing but supposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"added-to-list1\" data-pf_style_display=\"block\" data-pf_style_visibility=\"visible\"><span class=\"text-node\">Regardless, Moscary\u2019s underlying premise, that assault rifles are real but the term assault weapon exists to terrify people into supporting gun control remains true.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Truth Behind &#8216;Assault Rifles&#8217; On any given day, you won\u2019t be surprised to see some lawmaker calling for an assault weapon ban as part of some effort\u00a0they\u2019re trying to sell\u00a0as a way to reduce violent crime.
