Data isn’t just being collected from your phone. It’s being used to score you.

Operating in the shadows of the online marketplace, specialized tech companies you’ve likely never heard of are tapping vast troves of our personal data to generate secret “surveillance scores” – digital mug shots of millions of Americans – that supposedly predict our future behavior. The firms sell their scoring services to major businesses across the U.S. economy.

People with low scores can suffer harsh consequences.

CoreLogic and TransUnion say that scores they peddle to landlords can predict whether a potential tenant will pay the rent on time, be able to “absorb rent increases,” or break a lease. Large employers use HireVue, a firm that generates an “employability” score about candidates by analyzing “tens of thousands of factors,” including a person’s facial expressions and voice intonations. Other employers use Cornerstone’s score, which considers where a job prospect lives and which web browser they use to judge how successful they will be at a job.

Brand-name retailers purchase “risk scores” from Retail Equation to help make judgments about whether consumers commit fraud when they return goods for refunds. Players in the gig economy use outside firms such as Sift to score consumers’ “overall trustworthiness.” Wireless customers predicted to be less profitable are sometimes forced to endure longer customer service hold times. Estimated Firearms Sales In July 2020 Increased Year-Over-Year By 134.6%

Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting’s Chief Economist Jurgen Brauer:
“The firearms market continues at its far accelerated pace. Our estimates suggest that the market for the first seven months of 2020 now has nearly matched that of the entire year of 2019.”

Approximate United States Firearms Sales (January 2000 to July 2020).

Notes: Apart from obvious seasonality effects during the year, three massive demand spikes occurred in December 2013, December 2016, and as from March 2020 during the covid-19 crisis. Likely handgun unit sales overtook likely long-gun unit sales as from the year 2014.

From the last time AK and I visited there, I figured they had run out of room at the facilities north of Ozark a long time ago.

Ammunition maker investing $15M, adding 57 jobs at Little Rock facility

An Italian ammunition manufacturer will invest $15 million and add 57 jobs at its Little Rock facility, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced Wednesday.

The U.S. subsidiary of Fiocchi Group previously produced ammunition parts at the facility on 145th Street in Little Rock. With the investment and additional employees, the facility will produce the finished ammunition, mainly centerfire products, the Fioccchi of America president, Anthony Acitelli, said.

Are ammo shortages the ‘new normal’ for the rest of 2020?
Well, I do know that most of the distributors I do business with are out of just about every caliber right now. With all the people buying guns for the first time, it’s to be expected that they’d lay in a supply of ammo too.

Gun stores seeing an ammo shortage they say could last into 2021

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Gun stores across the First Coast and the country are experiencing an ammunition shortage right now as many people try to stock up during these uncertain times.

“The gun store was totally sold out, and they told me they’ve been sold out for some time and they don’t know when they’re getting ammunition in,” gun owner Craig Riley said.

Demand for guns and ammo has never been higher according to Firearms Sales Manager Z. Farhat at Green Acres Sporting Goods. Business, he said, is up by about 300%.

“We’re selling at an all-time pace. We have never been this busy, and I think the gun business has never been this busy,” Farhat said.

He said it’s simply a matter of supply and demand. Continue reading “”

Arms industry: Gun buys up 95%, ammo 139%, sales to blacks jump 58%

The gun industry has never seen anything like 2020, and the explosion in sales driven by the concerns over rising crime, protests, the coronavirus crisis, and the presidential election are expected to continue.

“Bottom line is that there has never been a sustained surge in firearm sales quite like what we are in the midst of,” the National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry trade group, said in a report shared with Secrets.

New sales and customer data collected from gun stores are even more shocking than the latest historic level of FBI background checks for purchases, security clearances, and concealed carry permits. Continue reading “”

I used to explain that there was no such thing as a ‘standard cow’ made in a lab when one steak wasn’t as tender or juicy as the next one. Now they’re telling me KFC has what could be called a ‘standard chicken’?
Is beef next? Eeyahhhhh!

KFC will test lab-grown chicken nuggets made with a 3D bioprinter this fall in Russia.

KFC will test chicken nuggets made with 3D bioprinting technology in Moscow, Russia, this fall, the chain announced in a July 16 press release.

The chicken chain has partnered with 3D Bioprinting Solutions to create a chicken nugget made in a lab with chicken and plant cells using bioprinting. Bioprinting, which uses 3D-printing techniques to combine biological material, is used in medicine to create tissue and even organs.

The 3D-printed chicken nuggets will closely mimic the taste and appearance of KFC’s original chicken nuggets, according to the press release. KFC expects the production of 3D-printed nuggets to be more environmentally friendly than the production process of its traditional chicken nuggets. The fall release will mark the first debut of a lab-grown chicken nugget at a global fast-food chain like KFC.

“Crafted meat products are the next step in the development of our ‘restaurant of the future’ concept. Our experiment in testing 3D bioprinting technology to create chicken products can also help address several looming global problems. We are glad to contribute to its development and are working to make it available to thousands of people in Russia and, if possible, around the world,” Raisa Polyakova, the CEO of KFC Russia and Commonwealth Independent States said in the press release.

What Would A Joe Biden Presidency Retirement System Look Like? Farewell, 401(k), For Starters.

The Biden campaign has now (yes, two weeks ago) rolled out its released its policy recommendations, hammered out with supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, in a new 110 page document, the Biden-Sanders Unity Task Force Recommendations. Is this a dramatic lurch to the left? It’s all a matter of interpretation, I suppose: for example, there is no promise of “Medicare for All,” but there is a plan to include a “public option” in which Medicare sets reimbursement rates, and in which those with income less than 200% of the poverty line have no premiums and every participant is promised a premium cap of 8.5% of income on a plan with no deductible and no copay for primary services. And there’s a lot that’s unsaid in this document; to take a random example, they pledge to “prohibit the continued taxpayer underwriting of pharmaceutical advertising” which sounds commonsense but actually would penalize drug companies by requiring them to calculate their profits (upon which they pay taxes) without considering advertising as a business expense, based on legislation proposed in January of last year, the “End Taxpayer Subsidies for Drug Ads Act.”

All of which is to say that it’s very difficult to take such a document at face value without knowing the “code” that underlies it. And that’s the case for the retirement provisions as well.

To begin with, these recommendations call for spending a lot of money. How much exactly is never tallied, but there are a long list of promises: “transitioning the entire fleet of 500,000 school buses to American-made, zero-emission alternatives within five years,” “universal, high-quality prekindergarten programs for 3- and 4-year-olds,” a massive infrastructure program including “historic investments in clean energy, clean transportation, energy efficiency, and clean and advanced manufacturing,” “Section 8 housing support for every eligible family,” and more.

It’s not yet clear why the weapon was seized and there have been no charges lodged against the couple.

People who care about the Constitution were very troubled by the action against the McCloskeys.

Colt Resumes Civilian AR-15 Production as Gun Sales Soar Across US.

Colt resumed AR-15 production and sales to the civilian market last week, refuting naysayers that said the sky was falling last year. Last September, Colt garnered headlines, as rumors spread Colt had abandoned the civilian market. In reality, military contracts took precedence, at a time when civilian markets plummeted.

Colt Resumes AR-15 Production, Sales to Civilian Market

The news broke last week from multiple sources. It proved what industry insiders have said all along: That it was a matter of fulfilling contracts. Quite simply, rifle sales sunk in a saturated market. So Colt focused on military sales.

“There have been numerous articles recently published about Colt’s participation in the commercial rifle market,” Colt President and CEO Dennis Veilleux said last year. “Some of these articles have incorrectly stated or implied that Colt is not committed to the consumer market. We want to assure you that Colt is committed to the Second Amendment, highly values its customers and continues to manufacture the world’s finest quality firearms for the consumer market.

“The fact of the matter is that over the last few years, the market for modern sporting rifles has experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity,” Veilleux continued. “Given this level of manufacturing capacity, we believe there is adequate supply for modern sporting rifles for the foreseeable future.”

Well, the future is evidently now, with Colt sending AR-15s back to the civilian market. Any why not, gun sales continue to skyrocket, setting records month after month. It’s a good time to send any type of firearm toward civilian sales.

As long as they leave their big city leftist politics behind.
Yeah, I know. I’m dreaming.

‘Shark Tank’ investor Herjavec: We’re about to see biggest exodus from cities in 50 years.

“Shark Tank” investor Robert Herjavec said Thursday he believes the coronavirus pandemic has shifted attitudes about city living, altering the dynamics of the real estate market for years ahead.

“This is one of the greatest moves to the suburbs from urban areas since the 1950s or the ’60s,” Herjavec said on CNBC’s “Squawk Alley.” “I recently moved out of Los Angeles into a suburban area, and I can tell you on a very personal level, my area is on fire.”

Herjavec, CEO and founder of cybersecurity firm Herjavec Group, said he feels that the changes in geographic preference will persist beyond just the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, predicting it will “be a trend for a while.”

“Everybody wants to leave large urban communities and move out into the suburbs,” said Herjavec, who also owns stakes in many small and medium-size businesses. “And I think urban real estate is going to hurt for a little bit.”

New head of news at NBC-Universal openly promises to discriminate against Caucasians

After just over a month in his new job as head of the newly formed NBC-Universal News Group, combining NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, and all streaming operations, Cesar Conde is making news himself.  In a video and memo to the approximately 3,000 employees he supervises, Conde announced a goal of 50% of employees being female and 50% “people of color,” an expression commonly taken to mean non-Caucasians.

Since Caucasians account for more than 76% of the United States population according to the Census Bureau, this amounts to a vow of racial discrimination.

Ben Smith of the New York Times tweets out the memo:

According to the Los Angeles Times, women already constitute about half of the workforce, so the goals outlined by Conde are exclusively aimed at reducing the employment opportunities for Caucasians:

Gun-related online businesses bemoan growing Big Tech’s suppression of the Second Amendment

After Karl Kasarda’s YouTube channel, InRange TV, was wiped without warning in early 2018, the firearm enthusiast said he had little option but to turn to posting clips and reviews on a platform of a different kind: PornHub.

He said navigating the social media landscape when it comes to the Second Amendment is only becoming more frustrating and confusing.

“The issue of oligarchical control over the Internet and all the impact over the ability to use it for free speech is going to only get worse,” Kasarda told Fox News, alluding to the “big five” — YouTube, Google, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“It is unclear what the rules are,” he added. “Specifically, with YouTube, they pretty much enforce whatever they feel based on their bias of the day. Regardless of your personal belief, firearms and their accessories are legal in the United States. So why are we seeing continuing restrictions and challenges towards content about something demonstrably legal yet not against that which is clearly illegal?”

More of that ‘decoupling’

Colorado on cutting edge to reduce China’s rare earth element domination.

WHEAT RIDGE—A Colorado city is now home to the tip of the spear in combating China’s domination of the world-market for rare earth elements (REE).  Manipulation of the REE market by China most recently resulted in the shutdown of the Mountain Pass REE mine in California in 2015 after an attempt by Greenwood Village-based Molycorp to reopen what has been the only developed REE mine in the U.S.

A pilot plant, now in operation in Wheat Ridge, which borders Denver to the west, will fine-tune existing technology to extract and purify elements including lithium, scandium, zirconium, beryllium, gallium and hafnium, among others, from domestic ore deposits in Texas.

Record jobs gain of 4.8 million in June smashes expectations; unemployment rate falls to 11.1%.

Nonfarm payrolls soared by 4.8 million in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1% as the U.S. continued its reopening from the coronavirus pandemic, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting a 2.9 million increase and a jobless rate of 12.4%. The report was released a day earlier than usual due to the July Fourth holiday.

The jobs growth marked a big leap from the 2.7 million in May, which was revised up by 190,000. The June total is easily the largest single-month gain in U.S. history.

Two words; decoupling and control. Decoupling is wonkspeak for separating supply chains. The word is easy; the process is complex. “Control of production” means “build it yourself.”

On Point: Decouple and Control: U.S. Must Secure Supply Chains and Production

by Austin Bay
June 30, 2020
Beijing’s June 30 decision to impose its national security law on Hong Kong renders the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 null and void. Promising one China, two systems, that treaty guaranteed Hong Kong’s political autonomy through 2047.

So another Chinese Communist Party guarantee has entered the dustbin of history. Now tyrannical whim backed by military threat will rule the city. After a decent interval of propaganda glorifying “one China, one system,” the Pearl of the Orient’s free media and honest courts will die along with its democracy.

CCP guarantees go poof when its senior leaders decide breaking a treaty, ignoring a contract or hedging a deal serves them. In short form, that’s unfortunate Hong Kong’s strategic lesson.

To protect their own political, economic and military security, the U.S. and other democracies must treat Beijing’s CCP regime as the aggressive adversary it is.

Gun Sales Continue to Soar, Texas Sets Another Record for Background Checks
Amidst the coronavirus lockdown and violence erupting in American streets, Texas saw the highest number of background checks for gun sales conducted in the month of June.

In a typical year, gun sales in Texas tend to slow down during the hot summer months. But this year, the Lone Star State set a record high for the number of firearm background checks conducted in the month of June.

According to data published by the FBI, there were a total of 227,232 NICS checks conducted in Texas throughout June, about 27 percent higher than the checks conducted last month.

That total is the fourth highest record for the state, just behind March’s high of 274,211 and approximately 240,000 checks conducted in the Decembers of 2012 and 2014. Continue reading “”

Below The Radar: Freedom Financing Act

United States – We have discussed the threat that corporate gun control poses to our Second Amendment rights multiple times. One of the threats is when companies like Salesforce have attempted to leverage their products to force companies to go along with infringements on our right to keep and bear arms. In many ways, the fight for our Second Amendment rights has now expanded to the boardroom and cubicle.

That said, the biggest threat is the financial blacklist. If banks, credit card companies, and credit unions refuse to do business with Second Amendment supporters or the firearms industry, any legal battle won at the Supreme Court can be rendered meaningless.

The good news is that there is legislation that can shut off the financial blacklist. Representative Roger Williams (R-TX) has introduced HR 2079, the Freedom Financing Act. This legislation pretty much tells major banks, credit unions, and credit card companies that they cannot discriminate on the basis of “reputational risks.”

Remington Arms Prepares for Bankruptcy, Weighs Sale to Navajo Nation

Remington Arms Co. is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is simultaneously weighing a possible sale of the company to the Navajo Nation.

The Wall Street Journal reports Remington is “[making] preparations for the Navajo Nation to serve as the lead bidder to purchase Remington’s assets out of Chapter 11.”

Reuters reports that this is the second time Remington has looked to bankruptcy protection. The first time was March 2018, with the company emerging from bankruptcy that same year.
