Florida woman fatally shoots man breaking into house with tire iron

A woman shot and killed a man who was using a tire iron to break into her home early Saturday morning, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

The incident occurred at about 6:40 a.m. Saturday on Ellie Road in an unincorporated area of Polk County near Auburndale.

At a news conference Saturday morning, Judd said the homeowner and the man she shot knew each other. They had been part of a group of four — two men and two women — who had gone out the night before. They all returned to the woman’s home at about 4 a.m., Judd said.

At some point, the man who would later be shot got into an argument with his girlfriend. He left the home in a car with the other man, but he returned later and started banging on and kicking the front door, demanding to see his girlfriend, Judd said.

Judd said the other man tried getting him to leave, but he refused and retrieved a tire iron from a car. He used it to break a window and tear through a screen The woman who owns the home then shot him dead. She and the man’s girlfriend were the only people inside the home at the time, Judd said.

Judd said deputies are investigating the shooting, but added that “it appears that the shooter was perfectly legal to defend her home from a burglar.”

The names of the people involved were not released Saturday morning. Judd said more details could be released later in the day.

 

Upshur County grand jury declines to indict veteran in June shooting death

An Upshur County [Texas] grand jury has declined to indict a veteran in a June 18 incident that left a man dead, determining the shooting was self defense.

Matthew Gregory Harris, 36, had been charged with murder in the death of Michael Clint Moses, 45, in western Upshur County.

“While any death is a tragedy, the absolute right of self-defense including deadly force was justified in this case,” Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said in a written statement. Continue reading “”

This is an example of the ‘felony murder’ rule, where the perpetrators are responsible for any deaths, even of bad guys when a homeowner kills one in self defense,  that happen during a crime.

Man charged in brother’s shooting death during burglary

A man died Thursday and two others were arrested after a homeowner fired his gun during a burglary, according to the Middletown Division of Police.

One of the men arrested is the deceased’s brother, officials confirmed Friday.

Andrew Roberts, 22, Jonathon Oatneal, 23, and Joshua Oatneal went to a residence in the 2600 block of Aspen Drive in Middletown late Wednesday evening to commit a burglary, according to a release from Middletown police.

During the burglary, the homeowner fired his gun. The bullet struck Joshua Oatneal, the release states. The two other men then transported Joshua Oatneal to the Atrium Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police responded to the medical center at 12:02 a.m. Thursday, the release states. Joshua and Jonathon Oatneal were brothers.

Police said Jonathon Oatneal and Roberts were charged with murder and aggravated burglary.

 

 

Woman shoots at armed suspect during convenience store robbery in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — An armed robber fled a north St. Louis convenience store Wednesday night after one of his victims pulled out her own gun and started shooting.

The robbery happened at around 11:35 a.m. at New Carrie’s Corner Market at 4500 Athlone Avenue in the O’Fallon neighborhood. A man entered the store, pointed a gun at two victims and demanded money from the cash register, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.

As one of the victims, a 55-year-old man, was getting money out of the register, a 46-year-old woman pulled out her own gun and fired shots at the suspect.

The suspect ran away. It was unclear if he was shot, police said. He was able to get away with some money, but police did not give an estimate of the amount.

Neither victim was injured during the robbery.

The investigation is ongoing.

Woman armed with handgun stops burglary, four people arrested

BELL COUNTY, Texas — A Bell County woman armed with a gun confronted a burglar who broke into her home in the 3800 block of Stillhouse Dr. Monday night, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was upstairs and heard what sounded like someone kicking down the front door, the sheriff’s department said. She went down stairs with a handgun and confronted the burglar, who the sheriff’s department said was also armed.

The burglar left the house without any shots being fired and got in a nearby vehicle. The vehicle, with four people inside, was later pulled over on FM 2410 in Belton. Continue reading “”

Cullman Co. homeowner shoots burglary suspect during break-in

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A burglary suspect is in the hospital after being shot by a homeowner, according to a social media post from the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said early Monday morning four people tried to break into a home in Garden City.

The suspects were met by the owners who were armed. When they tried to leave, the suspects were followed by one of the homeowners and shots were fired. One suspect was hit and is being treated at a hospital.

Three suspects have been detained, counting the suspect in the hospital, and one suspect got away in their vehicle.

Authorities believe there is no further danger to the community.

“This is a great example of citizens utilizing their second amendment rights and protecting themselves and their family. I have often stated that law enforcement can be minutes away when you only have seconds to defend yourself and your family. That’s why we at the sheriff’s office are proponents of not only having a weapon for self defense but also being proficient in how to use it,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry.

Men shot at Pembroke Lakes Mall were robbing jewelry store

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Two men who were trying to rob a jewelry store were shot by a store employee Friday afternoon at the Pembroke Lakes Mall, police say.

According to Pembroke Pines police, the two men went into Elite Fine Jewelry at 2:14 p.m., and one smashed glass display cases while the other began grabbing items.

A store employee pulled out a concealed firearm and shot both of the suspects, detectives say. The men were taken to a nearby hospital.

Police have not identified them, nor released an update on their condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Man shoots teen during attempted home invasion in Logan

LOGAN  neighborhood Philadelphia – Authorities are investigating after a man opened fire on a teenager and another man during an attempted home invasion in Logan early Friday morning.

Police were responding to the victim’s home when officers say they were flagged down by a wounded 17-year-old male near the intersection of 11th Street and Chew Avenue.

The teen told police that he was shot in the wrist and buttocks while walking down the street. Police found no evidence of a shooting where the teen claimed to have been shot. He was transported to a nearby hospital and his condition is unknown.

Through an investigation, police say the teenager and another man attempted to kick in the door of a 31-year-old man’s house. The homeowner opened fire on the suspects, striking the 17-year-old.

Police say the teen was arrested for his part in the attempted home invasion. Authorities are still searching for the teens suspected accomplice.

Robber Shot By Minneapolis Smoke Shop Employee

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A man may have gotten more than he bargained for after trying to rob a smoke shop Saturday night in south Minneapolis.

Fouad Elharfaoui owns USA Smoke Shop near Hiawatha Avenue and 46th Street. He says the robbery happened just before closing.

“Two guys walked in with a gun and tried to rob [my employee], but he has a concealed weapon and he pulled it out and tried to defend himself,” Elharfaoui said. “The guys took off, he chased them.”

According to Elharfaoui, his employee fired at the robbers’ car as they drove away, and hit the man in the passenger seat. Minutes later, a barely-conscious man stumbled into the Super USA convenience store at 38th Street and Minnehaha Avenue, a little more than a mile from USA Smoke Shop. Mohamed Kassab was working at Super USA that evening.

“We called the police for him to get help, you know. He’s bleeding. It’s very crazy, scary, you know?” Kassab said.

Police say the man was likely shot, and that he also matched the description of a suspect in a robbery a few minutes earlier. He was treated at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Elharfaoui feels his employee did the right thing. The robbers only got away with some cigarette cartons.

“I wasn’t worried at all about the store or the products or the money,” Elharfaoui said. “I was worried about my friend, you know. But when I heard he’s safe, that gave me a lot of relief, you know.”

Elharfaoui says his store’s in a great neighborhood, but it was looted during the riots, and now he must cope with this situation.

He also says he disagrees with the Minneapolis City Council’s plan to dismantle the city’s police department.

Brandon Woman Shoots And Kills Apartment Intruder

BRANDON, FL — A Brandon woman shot and killed an apparent intruder at her apartment on Sunday morning, authorities said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said that just before 4:30 a.m., a man the woman most likely knew knocked on her door at Woodberry Woods Apartments on Tealwood Drive. The woman cracked open the apartment door to see who was there but couldn’t see who he was, said authorities.

The man pushed the door open and an argument began between the two. The man then confronted another man who was also in the apartment, a police report said. Investigators said the intruder shot the man at least once, which caused an injury to his lower body.

In fear for her life, officials say the woman went back into a bedroom and got a gun. She returned to the living room area, where another argument took place and shortly afterward there was an exchange of gunfire between the intruder and the woman.  ………..

“We believe the decedent and woman involved in this shooting knew each other,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a news release. “We are still investigating the events that led up to this incident, however, it does appear domestic in nature.”…….

Great Bend homeowner shoots suspect during attempted burglary

GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) – An attempted burglary in Great Bend left the suspect with a gunshot to the face after being confronted by the homeowner, police say.

On Saturday Aug. 8, Great Bend police responded to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 1300 block of Jefferson St. Officers were told a man had entered into the home and a disturbance had taken place between the suspect and homeowners. When officers arrived they located and identified the suspect as 27-year-old Zachary Horyna with a gun shot wound to the face.

Horyna was restrained and treated from his injures by Great Bend EMS. Horyna was transported to KU Med Great Bend where he was then flown to a Wichita hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition. ………..

Armed intruder trying to steal two dogs is shot by resident

The resident of a Nebraska home shot an intruder trying to steal two dogs from the property Tuesday night, police say.

Terrion Richardson, 29, told police that an armed man broke into his Omaha home and tried to “forcefully steal two dogs,” KPTM reported. Officials did not indicate the breeds of the two dogs.

Richardson told police he disarmed the suspect and shot him, according to KETV.

Not long after, a man who’d been shot walked into an area hospital, police said. He was identified as the suspect, according to the outlet.

Police arrested Demetrion Washington, 29, after he was treated for his injuries and released, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Homeowner fires shot after trespasser pries open door

WILKES-BARRE — A homeowner on Carbon Lane discharged a round from a firearm when a man entered his house Sunday night, according to court records. Police arrested James Brewington, 35, of North Sherman Street, when he returned to the house with his hands in the air at about 10 p.m.

The homeowner told police a man he never saw before pried open the screen door and entered the house, causing him to discharge a round from a firearm into the floor.

Customer confronts suspects with gun at Columbia Waffle House, shots fired

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County deputies say two suspects have been arrested in an early morning attempted armed robbery of a Columbia Waffle House.

Officers charged 19-year-old Jamal Ford and 22-year-old Kenji Yates with attempted armed robbery.

Investigators say it happened around midnight on Tuesday, August 11 at the Waffle House located on 2345 Broad River Road.

According to officials, the suspects walked into the business, pointed guns at the cook, and demanded money.

Deputies say one customers in the restaurant who is also a licensed gun owner confronted the suspects. Gunfire was exchanged in the restaurant and the suspects ran away without any money.

No injuries were reported.

Officers say deputies and K-9 units were able to track down the suspects after a perimenter and track had been set up.

Yates and Ford were taken to the Richland County Detention Center.

Florida homeowner utilized Second Amendment right when he killed intruder

LAND O’LAKES, Fla. – A Pasco County man is dead after breaking into the home of a family who was supporting his estranged wife during their divorce proceedings, according to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

Authorities say 55-year-old Ronald Fleet broke into the home in the Sunset Lakes subdivision in Land O’Lakes just after noon on Saturday.

Fleet, armed with a handgun, was able to kick the door open and enter the house. The homeowner and Fleet exchanged gunfire which initially caused Fleet to leave, though a short time later he charged back inside. At that point, the homeowner fired again, killing Fleet.

Security guard shoots man who attacks him at Greyhound Bus Depot

DENVER — A security guard at the downtown Greyhound Bus Depot shot a man who attacked him with a metal pipe and knife-like object early Friday, according to the Denver Police Department (DPD).

Denver police officers responded to the incident at 2:35 a.m. Friday at 19th and Curtis streets in downtown Denver.

A DPD spokesperson said that a man stabbed a security guard at the bus depot and the security guard shot him.

Two unidentified security guards were patrolling the area around the bus depot when they spotted a man standing behind a concrete post connected to the bus terminal parking garage on the west side of Curtis Street, according to a probable cause statement for the man’s arrest from DPD.

One of the security guards approached the man, identified as Adell T. Phillips, 30. Phillips hit the guard with a metal pipe and then stabbed at him with a knife-life object, according to the statement.

The security guard suffered stab wounds to his neck and left arm, then drew his gun with his right hand and fired several shots, the statement says.

Both men were taken to a hospital. The security guard had minor lacerations to his neck and arm, and Phillips had gunshot wounds to his back and leg, according to the statement.

Phillips was booked into the Denver jail without bail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

Suspect shot in home invasion dies; police seeking accomplice

Tulsa police are searching for a man with a gunshot wound after a homeowner reportedly shot two men who broke into his home early Friday morning.

Officers responded to the home in the 800 block of North New Haven Avenue about 1:40 a.m. Friday and found the homeowner bleeding from the head after being pistol whipped.

Another man — believed to be one of two who entered the home while the homeowner, his wife and child were sleeping — was found on the floor in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

The homeowner said his dog’s barking alerted them to the intruders’ presence. Despite being pistol whipped, the homeowner told investigators he managed to take the gun away and shoot both intruders.

The man found in the bedroom, who remains unidentified, was taken St. John Medical Center and was pronounced dead later Friday morning. The homeowner was reportedly hospitalized with head injuries.

The second man remains at large after fleeing the scene before officers arrived. Police say they have checked local hospitals unsuccessfully.

Pulaski man cleared of murder, attempted murder

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Grand Jury decides a Pulaski County man acted in self defense when he fatally shot one man and wounded another during an altercation on his property in the Sloans Valley community in the southern part of the county on July 2.

A Pulaski County Grand Jury returned a “No True Bill” Wednesday against 65-year-old Bobby Ross, of Incline Road in Burnside, according to his attorneys, Jeremy A. Bartley and Kerri N. Bartley.

Ross originally was charged with murder, attempted murder, and wanton endangerment in an incident that took place on his property at about 9:20 p.m. on July 2, 2020. In that incident, 47-year-old Estle “Toby” Ridner, was killed, 45-year-old Danny Ridner, of Waynesburg, was wounded and shots were fired in the direction of Sharlene Helton, 46, and Tony Ridner, 43, investigators said at the time. Elderly man shoots woman during burglary

PORTLAND, Ore. — An elderly man opened fire Monday morning on a woman suspected of burglarizing his home in Portland, Oregon, according to authorities.

Police responded to a report of a burglary in progress just before 7 a.m. Monday at a home in the 1300 block of Northeast 81st Avenue.

“Officers were advised an elderly male homeowner was associated with the residence and a female was involved and may still be in the garage,” police said Monday in a news release. As officers were responding, police said they learned that the homeowner had shot the woman.

The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, which did not appear to be life-threatening, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Authorities said the homeowner, who was not identified, is cooperating with investigators.

Brownsville Woman Shoots, Kills Intruder Climbing Through Her Window

Miami-Dade police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead early Friday morning. He was shot by a woman who says the man was climbing into her apartment through a window.

Wentzville man killed after stabbing driver in the neck in Lincoln County

ELSBERRY, Mo. (KMOV.com) — An investigation is underway after deputies said a man shot another person to death after being stabbed in the back of the neck in Lincoln County.

The sheriff’s office said three people were in a car driving along Highway W just west of Elsberry on July 28. Around 9 p.m. the car stopped and the two passengers got out.

Law enforcement said when the driver tried to get out of the car, one of the passengers allegedly stabbed the driver in the back of the neck. Deputies said the driver then grabbed a gun and fired one shot at the passenger who stabbed him.

The man who did the stabbing, who law enforcement later identified as 54-year-old Stephen Johnson, of Wentzville, died at the scene. The driver was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The prosecuting attorney will review the case.

Security guard shoots, kills knife-wielding man in midtown Saturday

TUCSON, Ariz. — Police say a man is dead after he was fatally shot by the security guard of an apartment complex in midtown Tucson over the weekend.

According to the Tucson Police Department, it happened at a building on the 3800 block of Fort Lowell Road, between Dodge and Alvernon.

Officers arrived at the scene just before 9 p.m. There, they came to an apartment where they found 49-year-old David Reed, who had been shot. Officers rendered first aid to the man before Tucson Fire Department responders took over. They took Reed to the hospital, where he later died, Police said.

Police say they later learned an armed security guard hired by the apartment complex was conducting a check of the building when he heard noise inside a vacant apartment. He spoke to two people inside — Reed and a woman. As he was detaining the woman, police say Reed took out a knife and the guard shot him. The security guard also suffered minor injuries.

Detectives have not made an arrest in the case and are continuing their investigation.

Off-duty Troy cop fatally shoots man to stop stabbing, victim in critical condition

TROY NY (WRGB) – An off-duty Troy police officer jumped into action Thursday night, attempting to stop a stabbing in process, according to Troy PD’s Deputy Chief Dan DeWolf.

According to police, the officer was off-duty Thursday night at his home on 17th Street in Troy, when he heard a domestic incident upstairs. He went to investigate, and discovered a 26-year-old man in the process of stabbing a 25-year-old woman.

Police say the officer repeatedly told the man to back off, before eventually firing a shotgun, stopping the stabbing.

Police say multiple people called 911 for reports of the stabbing.

Graves man arrested after home invasion

A Graves County Kentucky man was shot early Thursday morning after reportedly kicking in a door and breaking into a home.

Graves Sheriff Jon Hayden reported that at about 3 a.m., a homeowner called 911 to report that a man wearing a mask forced his way into his home while armed with a shotgun. The home is on Ky. 1710 just south of Ky 58 East. The homeowner met the suspect, later identified as James Page II, 19, who reportedly fled the area after getting into a small vehicle. Homeowner shoots home invasion suspects near Ithaca

Enfield, N.Y. — A Tompkins County homeowner stopped an attempted home invasion by shooting two men who tried to break into his home, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers responded to the home on Rumsey Hill Road in Enfield at 7:21 a.m. Saturday, police said in a news release Wednesday.

Deputies investigate after homeowner shoots, kills uninvited visitor in Lancaster County

INDIAN LAND, S.C. (WBTV) – Deputies are investigating a shooting death after a homeowner fatally shot an uninvited visitor in Lancaster County over the weekend.

Deputies responded to a burglary call around 3:30 a.m. Sunday at a home on Fox Ridge Lane in Indian Land.

Officers said a 37-year-old man drove to the residence uninvited where his ex-girlfriend was visiting.

Deputies said the 37-year-old man, identified as Anastasio Kroustalis, from Matthews, NC, upset that the woman was there. The homeowner, a 40-year-old man, allowed Kroustalis to come inside to the downstairs kitchen.

The homeowner went upstairs to talk with the woman, who was in a walk-in closet in the master bedroom suite. Soon after, Kroustalis made his way upstairs and confronted the homeowner and the woman at the closet door.

Officers said a disturbance ensued and the homeowner fired a handgun at Kroustalis, who was shot and died at the scene. The woman was taken to a medical facility to be treated for injuries and later released.

A search warrant for the home and the Kroustalis’s automobile was obtained, and evidence was collected.

There have not been any arrests.

Exited their car and just walked in through the front door? Did they bust it in, or did they simply walk in because the homeowner didn’t lock the door or – at least – the screen door?

Resident shoots suspect during home invasion in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) — The Pueblo Police Department is investigating a reported home invasion in which at least one of the three suspects was shot.

Around 12:15 a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to the 700 block of Box Elder Street for a reported home invasion.

The two residents told officers that a white car pulled up and parked in front of the home. Three men exited the vehicle and entered the home through the front door. A physical altercation followed and one of the residents fired a handgun at the intruders. The three intruders quickly left and the residents said they believe that two of the three suspects were hit by the gunfire.

Shortly after, a 39-year-old man arrived to a hospital with two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police say they believe the man is one of the suspects during the home invasion.

One of the other suspects is described as a bald Hispanic male with a cleft lip, according to Pueblo Police. He was wearing a white basketball jersey with red trim, and he had chest tattoos. The third unknown intruder was described as an older Hispanic man, 6’5″ tall and about 230 pounds. He had grey hair and no facial hair. Police say one of these two intruders may have also been shot during the invasion.

Detectives are still investigating and no arrests have been made as of this article’s writing.
