Sacramento sheriff: Downtown shooting that killed six is result of ‘treating criminals like victims’

Smiley Martin, 27, was released from prison in February after serving less than half of a 10-year sentence for punching and whipping his girlfriend with a belt while she was hiding in her closet, despite pleas from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office that he “should not be released as he poses a significant, unreasonable risk of safety to the community.”

Just weeks later, he and his brother, 26-year-old Dandrae Martin, were allegedly involved in a gang shootout in downtown Sacramento in the early morning hours of April 3 that left six people dead and another dozen people injured.

The tragedy is just the latest example of what happens when society fails to punish repeat violent offenders, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones told Fox News Digital.

“The best predictor of future behavior is past conduct, and violent people, they’re going to be violent when they get out, and that’s what we’ve seen here,” Jones said.

“Every crime has a victim and these victims are racking up, sometimes minorly and sometimes catastrophically, like we saw in Sacramento. This is the latest, but it unfortunately won’t be the last. Because if we don’t change the way California and the rest of this nation treats criminals… then this is only going to be a continuing trend.”

Georgia shooting range robbery leaves 3 family members dead; 40 weapons stolen, police say

Police are searching for at least one armed suspect in connection with the killing of the owner of a gun range in Georgia and his wife and grandson, authorities said Saturday.

The Grantville Police Department said via Facebook that the robbery occurred Friday evening. When officers arrived at the scene around 8 p.m., they discovered the bodies of the owner of Lock Stock & Barrel Shooting Range, along with his wife and grandson.

According to WSB-TV, Grantville Police identified the victims as the gun range owner, Thomas Hawk, 75; his wife, Evelyn, 75; and their grandson, Luke, 17.

Police Chief Steve Whitlock said the Hawk family was well-known and well-respected in their small, tight-knit community. The Hawks had operated Lock Stock & Barrel for nearly 30 years. Their grandson was on spring break, helping his grandparents at the shop.

“This is just a shock to everybody in the community,” Whitlock told The Associated Press. “We’re trying to do the best that we can to figure this out.”

Whitlock said investigators believe the robbery and shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday, which is when the range normally closes. He said Hawk’s son, Richard, came by the business and was the person who found the victims.

There are no suspects as of early Saturday, and no arrests have been made, he said. Investigators said that as many as 40 guns and the range’s surveillance camera were also stolen.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating, but when contacted Saturday referred all inquiries to Grantville Police. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also called in due to the amount of weapons taken. Whitlock said he’s grateful for the help from other law enforcement agencies in the investigation.

“We’re just a small town, 12 officers. I’ve been here eight years and have never had to investigate anything like this. It’s been kind of hard on us. The crime rate is really, really low,” he said.

A reward of $15,000 has been posted for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer or killers in the case, according to the ATF Atlanta office’s Twitter feed.

“ATF and our law enforcement partners will work tirelessly to bring the killer(s) to justice,” ATF Atlanta Field Division Special Agent in Charge Benjamin P. Gibbons said in a statement. “The brutality of these senseless murders along with the fact that these killer(s) have acquired additional firearms makes solving this case our top priority.”

A message left with the ATF office in Atlanta was not immediately returned.

Police are asking any witnesses to come forward. Whitlock said they don’t have any video evidence to work with right now.

“Anyone having driven by the shooting range during the time frame of 530pm to 630 pm that may have seen vehicles other than a white Ford dually truck and a black Ford expedition are asked to contact the police department,” Grantville police said in their Facebook statement.

The shooting range is in rural Coweta County, about 50 miles (about 80 kilometers) southwest of Atlanta.

Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood said in a statement on Facebook that the entire community was forever broken by the “senseless and tragic” killings of the Hawk family members.

“I am also fervently praying that God will use our law enforcement community and the Coweta Community,” he said, “to bring justice swiftly.”

Suspect in Sacramento Mass Shooting Released on $500,000 Bond

One of the suspects arrested after Sunday’s mass shooting in Sacramento that claimed the lives of six people has been released on a $500,000 bond.

Daviyonne Dawson, 31, was released from the Sacramento County Jail Wednesday, only two days after being arrested and booked on one count of unlawful possession of a weapon. It remains unclear if Dawson paid all of the $500,000 bond or only a portion of the total.

Two other men arrested after the shooting are brothers Smiley and Dandrae Martin, aged 27 and 26 respectively who remain in custody on gun possession charges.

Currently, investigators don’t believe Dawson fired his weapon during the gang fight between two rival groups that led to the shooting, but that he was in the same place at the same time and was armed.

Sacramento Mass Killing Shows Failure of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Crime Agenda
Alleged killer was released from prison six years early. Electronic monitoring, or just keeping him in prison, would have saved six lives

One of the alleged shooters in a mass shooting that killed six people in Sacramento last Sunday was released from prison six years early by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, even though the man has a long and violent criminal record.

The Sacramento District Attorney’s office strongly opposed the man’s early release, claiming, correctly, “If he is released early, he will continue to break the law.”

Responsibility for the mass shooting, which killed a homeless woman, lies with Governor Gavin Newsom who appointed the head of the California Department of Corrections, which already reduced California’s prison population by nearly 30,000 inmates since 2019, and is seeking to reduce it by an additional 76,000.

The tragedy could have been prevented had Martin not been released, or been released under strict parole supervision, including electronic monitoring, and unannounced searches of his home by a parole officer for weapons.

“Despite a two-page letter to the Board of Parole Hearings urging that Martin remain in custody,” reports the Sacramento Bee, he won his release and was in Sacramento on Saturday night recording himself on a Facebook Live video brandishing a handgun hours before the shooting.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom used the incident to demand more gun control, tweeting “We cannot continue to let gun violence be the new normal.”

But there is little reason to believe more gun control would have prevented the killing. California already has the most gun control laws of any state. The automatic gun Martin apparently used is already illegal. And there is little reason to think Newsom’s proposal to let individuals sue people who help people get guns would have prevented Martin from getting a gun.

Dandrae Martin was taken into custody and booked on charges of assault with a firearm and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, police Chief Kathy Lester told KCRA 3’s Ty Steele in an exclusive interview Monday morning.

Waukesha Parade Suspect Darrell Brooks Jr. Back in Court Over Trial Jury Selection, Potential Date Change

Waukesha, Wisconsin, Christmas parade suspect Darrell Brooks Jr. was back in court on Tuesday, when attorneys from both sides discussed any potential jury biases and what should be included in the juror questionnaire.

Lawyers representing Brooks, 40, told Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Dorow that they did not expect to be ready for trial if it begins as scheduled in October, notifying the jurist of their plans to request that the date be pushed back.

Both parties also went back and forth regarding their concerns about possible jury exposure and bias. After roughly 40 minutes of publicized discussions, Dorow ordered attorneys from both sides to meet off-the-record and behind closed doors in the courtroom to go over what questions would be included in a jury questionnaire.

Spiraling Violence in Chicago: Causes and Solutions

For several years prior to 2020, violent crime in America’s major cities was on the decline. But since the riots that summer following the death of George Floyd, it is heading in the opposite direction.

Murders nationwide in 2020 rose a stunning 29.4 percent over the previous year, the largest annual increase since the FBI began tracking that data in the 1960s. The number of murders in Chicago climbed even more sharply, rising 55 percent. It was as if a switch had been flipped. At least ten major U.S. cities hit new murder highs in 2021, but Chicago led the way with 797, the city’s highest number in 25 years.

Chicago’s violent crime epidemic is not limited to murder. The city’s 3,561 shooting incidents in 2021 were up 63 percent over 2019. Expressway shootings in Chicago-Cook County rose even more dramatically, from 51 in 2019 to 130 in 2020 to 273 in 2021. These expressway shootings pushed Chicago’s actual 2021 murder total north of 800.

Violent Crimes Up 60% in LA According to Latest LAPD Data Since 2019
There has been an increase in the levels of violence and and firearm use during robberies

During a Los Angeles Board of Police Commission meeting earlier this week, LAPD Chief Michel Moore revealed that violent crimes have risen exponentially in the past year, moving the city closer to San Francisco in terms of the highest crime rates in the country.

According to the LAPD, citywide robberies are up 18% compared to this time last year, and up 5% compared to 2020. City wide robberies with a firearm also went significantly up, climbing 44% from this time last year, 57% from 2020, and 60% compared to 2019. While 36% of robberies and 74% of all robberies as part of the increase from last year used a firearm, the LAPD also got into specifics, such as noting that those who wore expensive jewelry in  public have been targeted more often in armed robberies.

“Over the course of this year, the Department has experienced an increase in robberies taking place in various communities in the City of Los Angeles,” the LAPD said in a press release on Tuesday. “Most concerning is that there has been an increase in the levels of violence used during these robberies and the frequency in which a firearm was used. During the Board of Police Commission meeting on March 22, 2022, Chief Moore discussed citywide robbery statistics, crime prevention techniques, situational awareness, and mitigation.”

Did NBC News and Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office break both federal, state, and local laws during their recent NBC Nightly News story on JSD Supply?

Many people in the gun community are asking if any laws were broken after the story ran on the NBC Nightly News. When the hit piece was filmed, the news organization and the Pennsylvania AG’s office appeared to have broken multiple laws to produce their sensationalized hit piece on Americans building guns at home.

Now gun rights advocates are demanding answers.

NBC News did a hidden camera investigation at an Eagle Shows gun show in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Eagle Shows is owned by Jordan Vinroe, who also owns JSD Supply. JSD Supply is one of the country’s largest 80% firearms retailers. Last fall, JSD Supply was banned from the gun shows due to pressure from the AG’s office and others. Vinroe turned around and purchased Eagle Shows and not only let sellers of unfinished firearms back into the show, but he also started holding classes where buyers could learn how to finish their products into fully working Firearms.

Disney employees and former judge among 108 arrested in human trafficking sting, Florida police say.

Authorities have arrested 108 people, including alleged child sexual predators and those seeking prostitutes, in a six-day undercover human trafficking operation in Florida. Among those taken into custody were four Disney employees and a retired judge, police said.

“The arrests of a human trafficker and four child predators alone makes this whole operation worthwhile,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. “Where there is prostitution, there is exploitation, disease, dysfunction and broken families.”

Disney Workers Planning Walkouts Over Florida Law That Bans K-3 [that’s 5 to 8 year old kids, by the way] Students From Being Taught About Sexual Orientation.

Disney workers are planning daily walkouts during their breaks this week to protest CEO Bob Chapek’s lack of response to a new Florida law falsely labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

The bill, falsely called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by opponents, refers to the “Parental Rights in Education” bill recently passed by the Florida legislature. The bill states, “[c]lassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate.”

What Did She Say? Here’s the Braindead Remarks DC Offered About the Latest Fatal Carjacking in the City

What did DC Mayor Muriel Bowser just say? I had to do a double-take. The recent carjacking in Washington DC that left a man dead was…not intentional. The killing wasn’t on purpose. That’s the line here? It doesn’t matter, Bowser. It really doesn’t. You can still be charged and sent to jail for accidentally killing people. What reality are Democrats living in here? Soft on crime has rotten the Left’s brains where they think if a crime was committed by accident, then it’s not a crime. Nope. It’s a crime. In the real world with real people and real laws, committing a crime is bad and people get sent to jail for it. At times, probation and penalties are involved. In severe cases, the state puts the perpetrator to death. This is not deep stuff, mayor.

Here’s the backstory that prompted this heinous remark from the mayor (via Fox5DC): MedStar doctor is dead after police say he was struck and killed by his own vehicle that had just been stolen from him in Northwest D.C. That MedStar Doctor has been identified as 33-year-old Rakesh Patel, of Silver Spring. His parents drove from Ohio to identify his body.

The incident began a little after 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of Vernon Street NW. Officers say Patel’s vehicle was left running in that area. A close friend of the victim’s girlfriend, Kristine Froeba, told FOX 5 Patel went to drop off something to his girlfriend that night. The two were hugging goodbye when Froeba said the couple saw Patel’s vehicle start to move.

Police say an unknown suspect entered the Mercedes and drove off east on Vernon St. Patel apparently pursued his stolen car.

He “probably didn’t intend to kill anybody,” Bowser said regarding the incident.

How have we come to this? Mayor, this may be hard for a liberal Democrat like yourself to understand, but criminals are bad people. This car thief is a murderer. He should be sent away for a long time if caught. How is this hard? He didn’t mean to kill anyone. That is beyond irrelevant in this case. He stole a car and killed someone. This person is criminal trash. End of story.

There’s this addiction among liberals that seeks to refrain from calling criminals out for who they are in society.

And within is how this case might apply to the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen case’s decision.
From what I’ve seen of his judicial writings, Gorsuch is a big fan of ‘personal liberty’ overriding .gov powers. This can cut both ways as he was on the majority side of the court’s Obergefell v Hodges approval of same sex marriage, but if he’s just as much for pro RKBA as he was for that, we may get a very good decision.

Wooden, ACCA, and Supreme Court Gun Crime Jurisprudence

On Monday, the Supreme Court released its opinion in Wooden v. United States, ruling unanimously in favor of the criminal defendant. At issue in the case is the different-occasions provision in the Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA), which imposes a mandatory minimum 15-years in prison when a person convicted of unlawfully possessing a firearm has three or more prior convictions for violent felonies, like burglary, that are “committed on occasions different from one another.”……………

Notably, Justice Gorsuch concurred only in the Court’s judgment and, in a part of the opinion not joined by Justice Sotomayor, castigated the majority for creating what he deemed an unworkable multi-factor test. In words that might be a harbinger of things to come in Bruen, he wrote: “Multi-factor balancing tests of this sort, too, have supplied notoriously little guidance in many other contexts, and there is little reason to think one might fare any better here.” As we’ve discussed at length, one of the key points to watch in Bruen is what the Court does with the methodological framework the federal courts of appeals have been unanimously using to assess Second Amendment challenges, but which some justices have considered an improper balancing test……………..

Student charged in Olathe, Kansas school shooting

MISSION, Kan. (AP) – An 18-year-old football player was charged Saturday in a shooting that wounded an administrator and a school resource officer at a suburban Kansas City high school.

The Johnson County prosecutor’s office announced Saturday that Jaylon Desean Elmore is charged with attempted capital murder in the shooting Friday at Olathe East High School. His bond is set at $1 million and no first appearance has been set..

Online records show he has a previous conviction for aggravated robbery.

KMBC 9 News learned that a school administrator pulled the student, who was a senior, from class this morning after receiving a tip that the teen had a gun in his backpack.

They went to the administrator’s office. The student refused to open his bag. That’s when the assistant principal called for the school resource officer. When SRO entered the office and that’s when the shots were fired.

 

Report: Good Guy with Gun Stops Kansas High School Shooter

An armed school resource officer shot and wounded an alleged school shooter, and the officer himself was shot and wounded, at Kansas’s Olathe East High School on Friday morning.

An administrator, a school resource officer, and a student — the alleged shooter — were injured in the incident, which occurred around 11 a.m., the Kansas City Star reported.

“Police said it was that school resource officer who shot the suspect,” KMBC noted.

The school administrator and resource officer were both in “stable condition,” as of 2:30 p.m. local time, KSHB observed.

Carjackings in cities like NYC, Philadelphia jump over 200% – often with kids behind the wheel, officials say.

Carjackings have skyrocketed 200% — or more — in multiple big cities across the county in past years, as law enforcement officials and crime experts pleaded with lawmakers on Tuesday for help addressing the rampant issue, with one official warning: “Anyone in a car is a potential victim.”

“The primary goal is to do our best to ensure that no one has a gun in their face demanding their car in the first place.”

Law enforcement executives and officials from crime monitoring agencies from across the country convened on Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing to address the startling trends related to carjackings. During his time at the microphone, National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) president and CEO David Glawe revealed some cities saw carjacking upticks as high as more than 280% between 2019 and 2021.

Carjackings have soared by 286% in New York City from 2019 to 2021, while Philadelphia saw the second-highest increase, with 238, the NICB found. Chicago followed with the third-highest increase, 207%, from 2019 to 2021, then Washington, D.C. with a 200% increase and New Orleans with 159%, Glawe told lawmakers.

“A disturbing subplot to these bleak numbers is that many carjackings are often committed in furtherance of other serious violent crimes, and many carjackings are committed by juveniles are committed by juveniles — some as young as 11 years old,” Glawe explained.

Glawe was joined by Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart, Metropolitan Family Services executive director Vaughn Bryant, Alliance for Automotive Innovation president and CEO John Bozzella, former U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman and Dallas Police Department Chief Edgardo “Eddie” Garcia.

Garcia, who also spoke on behalf of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, testified that the increase in carjackings is being driven by certain factors, such as financial gain and to further other violent criminal activity.

“Many of these carjackings are also committed by juveniles seeking to gain notoriety on social media or as part of gang initiations,” he said.

He pointed to reluctant prosecutors and judges who “continue to release violent and repeat offenders pretrial,” and noted that the challenges also apply to juvenile offenders.

Authorities believe the incident was domestic violence-related

‘domestic violence – related’ Really? It was the children’s father and he killed all 3 of them, from accounts their escort, then himself. And that restraining order and ‘gun free zone’ of the church building were worth exactly what they accomplished…..nothing.
Bad about the kids, but people just seem to not recognize danger, near or far away.

At least five people are dead, including the suspected gunman, following a shooting at a church in Sacramento, California, on Monday, authorities said.

The gunman killed his three kids before turning the gun on himself around 5 p.m. at an Arden-Arcade area church in Sacramento. Those killed were pronounced dead at the scene and authorities believe the incident was domestic violence-related. The fifth person who died was described as an adult………….

There already is a proven solution to this. Richmond Virginia tried it out awhile back and it worked very well;  Project Exile.
Among those 500 people, I’m betting about half of them have evidence that can lead to more arrests. DC has about 3400 officers, so why can’t they round up about 2000 officers to pick them all up simultaneously?

Study: DC gun crimes involve ‘small number’ of people

A study finds that suspects in violent crime in the District share a lot of characteristics.

The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform looked at the numbers for homicides and nonfatal shooting in D.C. in 2019 and 2020, and found that “most gun violence is tightly concentrated on a small number of very high-risk young Black male adults that share a common set of risk factors.”

Those factors include involvements in street crews, a previous criminal justice history and connection to a recent shooting. Often, they’ve been the victims of crime themselves. While the motive for the shooting “may not be a traditional gang war,” the report says, “often shootings are precipitated by a petty conflict over a young woman, a simple argument, or the now-ubiquitous social media slight.”

The homicide rate in D.C. rose by 18% in 2020 compared to 2019, the study found, and about 500 identifiable people are behind 70% of the 863 incidents involving gun violence. The studies also showed that about 200 people are driving a majority of these incidents at any one point in time.

More than 90% of victims and suspects in 2019 and 2020 were male and about 96% were Black.

The study also found that another 86% of victims and suspects have been involved with the criminal justice system and the average age of victims is 31, while the average age of suspects is 27 years old.

They found that, in terms of prior arrests, “victims and suspects were remarkably similar.”

NICJR is now recommending a clear, citywide strategic plan and is working with the District and community members to create a path forward, stressing that “a small number of very high-risk individuals are identifiable; their violence is predictable and therefore it is preventable.”

The study says the strategy will require intervention for people at high risk, which “requires frequent and regular assessment of recent shootings and identification of individuals likely to retaliate based on the findings of this report.”

If Dems Wants to Do Something About ‘Rise in Anti-Asian Hate Crimes,’ They Can Start By Being Tough on Crime

Saturday marks the 80th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing an executive order that began the removal of 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned in internment camps. DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison and DNC AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong issued a joint statement commemorating that day. The joint statement also closed by claiming it’s Democrats who are righting for the safety of Americans, while at the same time calling out anti-Asian hate crimes.

Such a mention may be bold, or even stupid. In many Democratic-run cities, crime has exploded. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, as Katie reported, has dismissed a “soft on crime policies” approach as an “alternate universe.” Worse, Democratic DA’s are no help.

“Unfortunately, Japanese Americans and the AAPI community continue to face violence and discrimination because of their identities,” the joint statement acknowledged. “The rise in anti-Asian hate crimes must stop, and perpetrators must be prosecuted. Democrats have fought and will continue to fight to secure the rights, safety, and prosperity of all Americans, including those facing injustice and discrimination, in order to ensure a better and brighter future for our nation,” it closed with.

The version of the statement shared on Twitter did not mention such a modern-day application, curiously enough.

If Democrats truly feel that “perpetrators must be prosecuted,” then they can start in their own cities, with their own DAs.

A recent and tragic case in point is with Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, who only just recently has been reversing course on his super soft on crime approach over backlash, as Landon has covered. According to the New York Post, which I’ve mentioned in my own articles, there have been whispers of a recall effort against Bragg, who only just took office at the beginning of this year.

Among many changes, Bragg initially made, as Spencer highlighted, was the lack of prison time except for crimes of homicide and some other of the most violent offenses. Bragg also had the audacity to claim “I don’t understand the pushback” when people expressed concerns.

These changes from Bragg’s office haven’t been enough, though.

Activist Quintez Brown charged in attempted shooting of Louisville mayor hopeful Greenberg

A Louisville activist has been identified as a suspect in the attempted shooting of mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg — a case that has drawn national attention and unproven accusations of radicalism amid a tense racial and political climate.

Quintez Brown, 21, was charged late Monday with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment after Greenberg was shot at in his campaign headquarters that morning.

No one was injured in the shooting, but a bullet grazed Greenberg’s sweater and shirt.

Brown, a former intern and editorial columnist for The Courier Journal, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday, where a judge set his bail at $100,000.

U.S. Marshal questions measure aimed at banning ghost guns in Maryland

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Veteran crime fighters are questioning the impact of a measure aimed at banning the purchase and possession of ghost guns in Maryland.

Its a key component of a crime package introduced by Democratic lawmakers who have twice failed to approve a crime package proposed by the Governor.

However, the impact of the proposed ghost gun ban is being questioned by those on the front lines of the crime war.

“If you eliminated all ghost guns you’re still going to have a big crime problem,” said U.S. Marshal Johnny Hughes.

The homemade guns are untraceable and undetectable.

Police seized more than 300 on the streets of Baltimore last year. 11% of those guns were linked to actual crimes.

Hughes believes the only action which will have an impact on the city’s soaring homicide rate, is focusing on the users of illegal guns instead of the guns themselves.

“The gun doesn’t shoot people, it’s the violent offender pulling the trigger who we need to go after,” said Hughes.
