Lynchburg gun groups challenge Governor’s executive order

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Judge Frank Patrick Yeatts of the Lynchburg Circuit Court will make a decision on Monday regarding a challenge to Governor Ralph Northam’s Executive Order 53.

The plaintiffs in the case; the Citizens Defense League, Gun Owners of America, SafeSide Lynchburg, and the Association of Virginia Gun Ranges; argue that indoor gun ranges should be considered “essential” and allowed to reopen. Attorney David Brown cited the Second Amendment and argued that ranges are needed for gun owners to be properly trained to handle a firearm.

Solicitor General Toby Heytens argued on behalf of the Commonwealth, saying the Governor’s Executive Order applies to indoor ranges, not outdoor ranges, where the risk of spreading coronavirus among individuals in an enclosed space may be higher.
