A recreational vehicle is parked in the deserted streets of downtown Nashville. It explodes and causes widespread communications outages, taking down police emergency systems and grounding flights at the airport.
Okay.
AT&T said the affected building is the central office of a telephone exchange. The blast interrupted service, but the company declined to say how widespread outages were. The AT&T outages site showed service issues in middle Tennessee and Kentucky, including Bowling Green about 60 miles north-northeast of Nashville. Several police agencies reported that their 911 systems were down because of the outage, including Murfreesboro and Knox County and Knoxville about 150 miles east-southeast of Nashville. The FAA shut down Nashville International Airport because of telecommunications issues too.
Remember the electric substation in Silicon Valley that was shot up and a bunch of AT&T fiber optic cable were cut back in 2013 and no one ever figured out whodunit? It’s like someone is demonstrating their ability to monkey wrench things whenever they want.
Aaaaand, if your 911 system can be taken down by an exchange 150 miles away being taken out of service, your system sucks.
