80-year-old Arkansas man shoots teen breaking into his home

HUGHES, Ark. — A burglary suspect is recovering after being shot while another is on the run after they tried to break into a man’s house twice.

Thieves broke into 80-year-old Fred Burkes’ home two nights in a row.

Early Monday morning, he heard noises and found two men taking his 55-inch flatscreen TV.

“They ran out the house,” Burkes said. “And then I looked again, and my TV was gone.”

Burkes boarded up his front door with a wooden board, hoping it would prevent a future break-in.

Neighbors say they saw two men circling the block just hours later. One neighbor said they were watching Burke’s house very closely.

Burkes says the thieves struck again around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. They climbed through a back window and he says they tried to get into his bedroom. Burkes says they started asking him where his money was.

He began pushing against the door to keep them out but when they started threatening him, he took action.

“I reach and got my shotgun …” Burkes said.

Burkes shot one suspect in his bedroom doorway while the other ran off.

Hughes police says both suspects are juveniles with histories of prior break-ins. The one who was shot is still recovering.

Burkes will not face charges but is sad local teens are resorting to crime.

“I don’t feel good at all,” Burkes said. “I’m 80 years old. If he had gotten in there, I don’t know what he would’ve done.”

His neighbors say they will be keeping an eye out for Burkes.

At this time, no charges have been filed in this case.

Alleged burglar charged with murder after accomplices are shot down in attempted home invasion

Austin police have charged a man with murder after police said he and two of his accomplices tried to rob two roommates at their northeast Austin apartment on Feb. 18. That robbery left his alleged accomplices dead.

Octaviano R. Rodriguez, 30, along with Casaundra Hernandez, born in 1989, and Emilio Maisonet, born in 1990, attempted to rob a residence at the Creekside on Parmer Lane apartments located at 5401 E. Parmer Lane at around 10:30 p.m., according to Austin police.

The roommates in the apartment told police that Rodriguez, Hernandez and Maisonet knocked on their door and claimed to be with the City of Austin when one of the residents asked who they were. The affidavit said Rodriguez was wearing a hardhat and a construction vest.

The resident who opened the door told officers a man, who police identified as Rodriguez, forced his way into the apartment and put a pistol to the back of the resident’s head.

The other resident told officers he went to his bedroom to grab his handgun. He told officers that two or three people had entered the apartment and that the intruders fired a shot in his direction before he returned fire.

The resident who returned fire told police he saw Rodriguez flee the apartment. Additionally, the affidavit said one of the residents was able to identify Rodriguez in a photographic line-up.

According to the affidavit, officers heard Rodriguez screaming for help behind some bushes. Police said Rodriguez had a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said they found Hernandez, who was unresponsive and had multiple gunshot wounds in a breezeway in the complex. Police found a handgun underneath Hernandez’s body, according to the affidavit. Hernandez was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m., according to the affidavit.

Police located Maisonet as well, who police said also had an apparent gunshot wound. According to the affidavit, Maisonet was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m.

Rodriguez is being held at the Travis County jail on a $250,000 bond for a first-degree felony murder charge. According to the affidavit, Rodriguez “committed an act clearly dangerous to human life … which resulted in the unintended deaths of Casaundra Hernandez and Emilio Ortiz.”

Auburn Pair Attempt to Rob Couple, Get Shot in The Process

Yesterday we reported on a story that very few details were available on involving an armed robbery and shots fired in Auburn.

Beasley and his accomplice were attempting to rob a couple using a BB gun. The male victim said he needed to retrieve his wallet from the car to give them money. What the man actually retrieved was his 9mm pistol and began firing at the suspects, hitting Beasley’s accomplice.

An intruder was shot multiple times during a predawn home invasion Monday in Elmore County.

The ordeal began just before 5 a.m. in the 200 block of Clemons Road in the Flatwood community. Sheriff Bill Franklin said the scene is a residential area that consists of about a dozen or so mobile homes.

A man, who along with his wife and young child, were awakened at 4:55 a.m. by a loud banging at the front door. The homeowner grabbed his 9 mm handgun and went to investigate.

When he got to the front door, he came face to face with 39-year-old Charles Bowne, who lives nearby. At that point, the sheriff said, Bowne told the homeowner, “Give me your (expletive).”

Bowne then reached toward his pocket and the homeowner said he feared the intruder was going for a gun. The homeowner fired four to five rounds, shooting Bowne in the head, bicep, shoulder and left leg, and then called 911.

Try for the torso next time, dude…T-O-R-S-O.
Somewhere in right in the middle, between the Collar bone to Belly button.

Bowne was airlifted to a Montgomery hospital where he is in critical condition. The sheriff said a crack pipe was retrieved from Bowne’s sock.

Franklin said Bowne spent time in prison in Indiana and has previously had at least one other confrontation with another neighbor. He said he does not expect any charges to be filed against the homeowner.

“We don’t have that many home invasions in Elmore County,’’ the sheriff said. “It’s not every morning you wake up at 4:55 a.m. to somebody inside your front door. That’s pretty rough.”

Gun stores, firearm instructors notice number of women buying guns on the rise

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) – New numbers show more women have a gun at home and local gun stores and teachers of firearm classes say they notice the difference.

That study shows, since 2017, the number of women buying guns has been on the rise. Some site social media, but others say now is the time women are taking things into their own hands when it comes to safety.

Boys move over because lately, more girls just wanna have guns!

Wisconsin Church Self-Defense Bill Hearing

On February 20th, the Senate Committee on Insurance, Financial Services, Government Oversight and Courts will hear Senate Bill 822 to improve the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their loved ones in churches.

Senate Bill 822 affirms that law-abiding adults with a license to carry firearms for self-defense may do so in places of worship unless the property is specifically posted to prohibit carry. This ensures that such decisions involving security are left up to individual places of worship rather than the government mandating a one-size-fits-all solution. So-called “gun-free zones” simply disarm law-abiding citizens and leave them defenseless against criminals who ignore arbitrary boundaries.

Couple shoots 3, kills 2 after attempted home invasion

“Two outta three ain’t bad.”

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police say people living in a northeast Austin apartment shot three people breaking into their home, killing two of them. A man and woman died Tuesday night in the attempted home invasion.

The third person who was shot, a man, was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Police say the shooting took place inside a unit at the Creekside on Parmer Lane apartment complex at 10:30 p.m. Police say people inside the unit fired the shots but did not say who they were, how many people fired a gun, or how many shots were fired.

“They were running around everywhere, ambulances and everything,” said Witness Tyler Watts. “With their assault riffles running, they were huge.”

Police had the majority of the complex blocked off with crime scene tape.

Tyler Watts was just moving into his new Creekside apartment when the shooting happened. He thought a spot farther from where he used to live at Lamar and Rundberg two years ago would be safer.

The boxes are still piled up in his new unit. He recently moved away from violence in California.

Women With Firearms: 23 Truths You Should Know

  1. You can never have too much ammo. It’s amazing how quickly one or two people can shoot through 100 rounds or more in a single target practice.
  2. If you’re smart, your firearms will be common calibers. It will be easier to find ammo and easier to get replacement parts.
  3. If you’re even smarter, you’ll own firearms that are of popular makes and models. It will be easier to find a gunsmith capable of making repairs and handling customized requests.
  4. Unless you’re at the range every day, it’s hard to get too much practice. If the range masters know you by name, that’s a good sign that you’re getting enough practice!
  5. It’s a mistake to limit your practice to shooting at a piece of paper under optimal conditions. Take classes that will challenge your shooting skills in high-pressure scenarios. Until the adrenaline is really pumping and your brain feels scrambled, you’ll never know how you’ll respond in a life or death situation. (Note: The first time I was firing a gun under pressure, I got so rattled that I was using my non-dominant eye.  I was fortunate that any shots hit my target!)
  6. shotgun should be at or near the top of your list when it comes to firearms for home defense. Your choices are the 12 gauge, 20 gauge and the 410. Once you’ve made your decision, get to the range and practice, practice, practice. When it comes to stopping power, a shotgun can’t be beat. According to the study, 50 percent of women with firearms have at least one shotgun and 56 percent have a semiautomatic pistol.
  7. Don’t fall into the trap of buying the smallest gun at the store. Believe it or not, a larger gun will be more comfortable and will shoot more accurately. Read my reviews of the Sig Sauer MosquitoWalther P22 and Ruger Mark III.
  8. Learn how to clean your own gun. Learn how to completely dismantle it (field strip), clean each part, and put it back together.
  9. Your safety is your responsibility. Not your husband’s, nor the police, nor your kids.
  10. A gun isn’t the end-all when it comes to personal or home security. Think in terms of layers: Situational awareness, home security systems, a watchdog, cacti or rose bushes along the back fence. It all adds up to more peace of mind and less dependence on any one strategy.
  11. If a gun isn’t possible or desirable in your circumstances, come up with Plan B. One of my friends keeps a baseball bat near the front seat of her minivan. Another always has the most powerful pepper spray on the market in her purse, and yet another keeps an 18″ length of steel rebar wedged between the driver’s seat of her car and the middle console. Whatever your choice, always be aware of the location of your weapon, practice using it, and be comfortable with the thought that one day you may have to use it.
  12. Don’t listen to celebrities and politicians who go on hysterical anti-gun rants. Remember, they can afford armed bodyguards and state-of-the-art home security systems. (Interesting that it’s okay if their bodyguards are armed but they don’t think law-abiding citizens should be able to own and carry guns.) I am my kids’ armed bodyguard.
  13. Practice rapid firing when you’re at the range. If your life, or that of your children’s, is ever on the line, and your only choice is to draw your gun, your best tactic will be multiple, rapid shots at the bad guy(s).
  14. Don’t assume you will only ever have to deal with a single bad guy. Just like roaches, bad guys stick together. You may very well be confronted with several all at once. Keep that in mind.
  15. There’s a reason why experts prefer to keep their sidearms concealed. Open carry is okay if you’re trying to impress people, but it also makes you a target. According to the study by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, more than 42 percent of women with guns have a concealed carry permit.
  16. Your life should never depend on a gun you’re afraid to shoot. If the recoil is too powerful, if the trigger pull is too heavy, if firing it hurts your hand, do not plan on using that gun as a defensive weapon. Sell it. Give it away, but whatever you do, have a gun you are comfortable with and actually enjoy shooting. If that life or death moment should ever come, there cannot be even a moment’s hesitation due to fear of using your gun.
  17. If you choose to carry your handgun concealed, practice drawing it from its holster or from its concealed location. And then practice another hundred times.
  18. It’s a really good idea to keep an extra loaded magazine in your purse, the glove compartment, wherever it will be safe and easily accessible.
  19. You just might be able to easily handle a larger caliber of handgun than you think at first. Don’t underestimate your ability.
  20. Nothing beats not being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  21. Be willing to back down in a confrontation or willing to run or call for help. Your goal is to survive, not show off to the world your awesome marksmanship skills.
  22. Every gun-nut has his/her own opinion about the best make, model, caliber, shooting stance, etc. Be willing to listen but keep in mind that they are just opinions.
  23. Don’t get overly cocky just because you have a firearm in the house, your purse, or have a certificate from your shooting range for completing an advanced course. Law enforcement officers miss their target in a shooting confrontation about 70% of the time. Think about that.

Vancouver homeowner shoots, kills suspected burglar

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was shot and killed while breaking into a home overnight, according to Vancouver police.

Vancouver PD responded to what they believe was a burglary around 10:20 p.m. in the River View Neighborhood along Southeast Beach Drive. Police said an unknown man kicked in a back door and was inside the home when he was confronted by the homeowner, who had a gun.

The burglar charged the homeowner, who fired and shot the suspect. The suspect ran outside and collapsed. When authorities arrived the suspect was already dead.

The homeowner and his family were not injured.

One woman who lives in the neighborhood said she’s sorry for the tragedy that someone died “for trinkets or whatever. It wasn’t worth it. But I totally support the homeowner’s desire to protect themselves.”

Mike Murphy, who lives nearby, said it seems people are more desperate and brazen these days.

“Homeowners have a right to protect themselves. You can’t just expect to break into somebody’s home and there’s not going to be repercussions to their actions.”

Murphy said it’s a nice, quiet area. “You just don’t think there would be those kind of people down here up to no good.”

Oklahoma State Senate passes bill making it easier to arm teachers

The Oklahoma Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that could make it easier for Oklahoma teachers and school personnel to carry a firearm at school.

The bill by Republican Sen. David Bullard, R-Durant, and Rep. Sean Roberts, R-Hominy, would change requirements for teachers to be able to be armed at school.

Bullard said the rural school districts in his area want the legislation because it could take a significant amount of time for law enforcement to respond to a mass shooting on campus.

“We have students right now that are vulnerable if someone walks in with a gun,” he said. “It’s a manslaughter and there’s nothing they can do about it.”

Teachers would no longer be required to complete a 240-hour Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training certification course in order to be armed at school. Bullard said the requirement is cost prohibitive and time intensive to a point that it deters teachers from participating.

Instead, under House Bill 2336, school personnel who undergo the eight-hour concealed carry class or the 72 hours of armed security guard training would be eligible to carry on campus at K-12 schools. The personnel also would have to go through “campus-specific active shooter training” as stipulated by local law enforcement agencies.

The campus-specific training would vary based on a school’s size and layout and would be intended for law enforcement to work one-on-one with teachers or school staff who intend to be armed, Bullard said.

Senate Democrats said the legislation could result in teachers having various levels of training depending on which district they teach.

Convenience Stores, where crooks can go to conveniently get shot

Suspect shot during armed robbery attempt outside gas station

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating an attempted armed robbery that ended with the suspect getting shot.

Officers responded to the Sunoco gas station at 1416 Oxford St. around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to an FWPD lieutenant at the scene, witnesses told police a group of people walked out of the convenience store and got in a car at one of the pumps.

That’s when a man wearing a mask apparently walked up to the car, pulled out a handgun, and tried to rob them at gunpoint.

While that was happening, another man with the group walked out of the store and saw what was unfolding. He pulled out a gun and exchanged fire with the robbery suspect.

The suspect and some of the victims then ran from the scene.

As police searched the area, they found the suspect about a block away with a handgun and a face mask nearby. Police said he was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Medics took the injured suspect to a hospital, but doctors determined his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police also eventually found all of the robbery victims that left the scene. Detectives took them to the police station to interview them about the incident.

During their search for more evidence around the area, officers found multiple guns in various places. It’s still not clear whom they belonged to, and police said it was too early to say what other charges, if any, may result from the situation.

The robbery suspect is being guarded at the hospital and will likely be charged with armed robbery once he is discharged from the hospital, according to a lieutenant at the scene.

One woman who lives across the street from the gas station where the shooting happened said bullets came into her apartment during the incident, but they didn’t hit anyone.

Nobody besides the robbery suspect reported any serious injuries.

Detectives interviewed victims and witnesses, and also planned to review security video at the scene to learn more about the incident and confirm the details of what happened.
