Suspected burglar was shot by Provo resident

PROVO — A Colorado man who police say entered a random house uninvited was shot by one of the residents and later arrested on Thursday.

Lance Andre Hunter, 41, of Aurora, Colorado, was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of burglary, criminal mischief, two counts of theft, vehicle burglary and assault.

Utah County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the South Fork Neighborhood of Provo Canyon about 8 p.m. Thursday after Hunter allegedly entered the home uninvited. The home sits on a large piece of property that includes a hangar and a helicopter, according to the sheriff’s office. Hunter is believed to have burglarized the hangar before going to the house.

Once inside the home, Hunter was confronted by the homeowner’s adult son. Hunter began yelling at the people in the home, prompting two women to run into an upstairs bedroom and lock the door, a police booking affidavit states.

After Hunter pushed past the son, he went upstairs and “was attempting to kick in the door to the room they had locked themselves in.” That’s when the son reengaged Hunter, this time armed with a gun, according to the affidavit.

Detectives were told that “the son fired multiple shots at the suspect before the male fled, leaving behind a firearm he had taken from the residents. The suspect was then seen fleeing to a helicopter hangar near the residence,” the affidavit says.

Despite being shot once, police say Hunter stole a vehicle at the hangar that had the keys still inside and tried to leave the area, but was stopped by responding deputies.

“The suspect would not comply with deputies’ commands and had to be wrestled to the ground and handcuffed. The suspect was taken to Utah Valley (Hospital) and treated for his gunshot wound before he was transported and booked into Utah County Jail,” according to the affidavit.

A spokesman with the sheriff’s office says the investigation into Hunter’s activities was still ongoing Friday. Investigators believe another vehicle found in the area was used by Hunter to arrive at the home. Why Hunter chose that home and whether he is responsible for additional burglaries remained under investigation.

Des Moines homeowner shoots alleged intruder during late-night break-in

A 46-year-old woman is facing a felony charge after police say she forced her way into a Union Park home late Saturday night and was shot by the homeowner.

Des Moines police officers were called just before 11 p.m. to a residence in the 1500 block of Guthrie Avenue after a 911 caller reported that an intruder was attacking the homeowner. While officers were en route, the caller told dispatchers that the intruder had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found Stannita Wilson inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers provided first aid until Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel arrived and transported Wilson to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center for treatment.

According to investigators, the homeowner reported hearing someone yelling in the backyard, followed by banging on the back door. When the homeowner unlocked the door, Wilson allegedly forced her way inside and began assaulting the resident.

Police said the homeowner, who was armed with a handgun, shot Wilson during the confrontation.

Wilson’s injuries were described as minor. After being treated and released from the hospital, she was charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony.

Police said Wilson was not known to the homeowner. As of Sunday, no charges had been filed against the homeowner.

The incident remains under investigation

Man reportedly killed in self defense in Springfield ID’d; neighbors shocked it happened

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) — Police are investigating after an early morning shooting in Springfield Friday.

Officers were sent to a home in the 1700 block of Maiden Lane at 12:56 a.m. on a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, they located a man, later identified as Anthony Walker Jr., 28, who had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead by Springfield Fire Rescue Division medics.

Authorities say the shooting was in self-defense, and that there are no threats to the public.

Neighbors in the area who say incidents like these are rare for this neighborhood.

They said that this area is typically quiet and that fireworks were the loudest disturbances they were used to.

One person said the fireworks they thought they’d heard early in the morning turned out to be gunshots.

“We heard about five pops and thought someone’s shooting fireworks again,” said a neighbor, who says she has lived nearby for years. “They started roping off the area so we knew something was up.

“It’s just like a quiet small town.”

The neighbor says they were stunned learning someone had been killed.

“We were pretty shocked that kind of excitement unfortunately coming around here,” she says. “It’s not normal. Not at all.”

Neighbors stunned after burglary suspect was shot by homeowner in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — “It’s just crazy to know that that was just right next door.”

That’s how one neighbor on South Jefferson Street in New Castle was feeling Tuesday.

Early Monday morning, police said a neighbor on her street shot a man in the leg after they said the man broke into the home.

The neighbor didn’t want to be on camera, but said her street is always quiet.

“I’ve been here for four years, and this is a very quiet street,” she told Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek. “The kids go out and play every day, I mean, they’re always nonstop running around outside. It’s very quiet, nobody bothers you, I mean, the kids go to church right up the street, so that was just very alarming when I heard that. It was just like…Wow.”

Lt. Steven Brooks with the New Castle Police told Channel 11 the suspect is still in a Youngstown hospital and might be for some time. Charges have not been filed and he said the investigation is still ongoing.

Brooks said the man and the homeowner did not know each other. Right now, police do not expect charges to be filed against the homeowner.

“I’m so thankful he was able to protect his family,” the neighbor said. “I mean, luckily, he had that on him and he was able to do that. Sorry, it had to go to those lengths, but luckily he was there at that time to make sure his family was safe.”

That neighbor said she has cameras, but they didn’t catch anything.

“I definitely think I’ll be way more alert, definitely on high alert as of right now, just until everything’s under wraps and they figure out why they did it,” she said.

Dan Bongino Breaks Down What Just Happened at Mar-a-Lago

Early Sunday morning, the U.S. Secret Service shot and killed a man in his twenties after he breached the secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM, and according to officials, the man was observed near the north gate of the property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can.

No Secret Service protectees were present at the time.

Dan Bongino, the former FBI deputy director, appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend Sunday morning to break down what happened.

“Breaching the property, if what we have from the early reports is accurate, and we have no reason to believe otherwise, with a gas can and a shotgun, it appears the intent seems built in,” Bongino told host Charlie Hurt.

Mar-a-Lago is no ordinary location to stumble into. Bongino, who knows the property well, pointed out that serious security upgrades have already been made — particularly on the north side, where the incident occurred. “That side of the property, the north side of the property over there, they’ve made a number of significant security enhancements,” he said, adding that significant money has been poured into technology and physical security at the site.

Bongino noted that in the end, it was a human being who made the call. “Ultimately, in the end, you know, there was an interdiction here by a human being, and they’re gonna be the ones who are obviously the decision makers,” Bongino said. Under the law, that decision requires a specific threshold. “In order to enact any kind of deadly force, which happened in this case, you have to have a fear of serious physical injury or death. It appears the agent or officer who was involved thought that to be the case.” He didn’t leave much ambiguity about why: “The early reporting of a weapon seems to indicate the obvious reason why.”

That said, it’s also worth noting here is that this was a team effort. Bongino pushed back on the Hollywood image of lone Secret Service agents with earpieces as the only line of defense. “It’s not just Secret Service agents. You see that in these movies, it’s always the Secret Service agents with the earpiece, but we rely heavily on the fantastic work of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and others.” Indeed, the official Secret Service statement confirmed that a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy was also involved in the shooting.

Bongino walked viewers through the procedural mechanics of what will happen next. The FBI, per a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Secret Service, will take over the crime scene — a safeguard designed to prevent any appearance of self-investigation. “If there was some kind of security lapse that required an investigation later, you wouldn’t want the Secret Service investigating themselves,” he explained. “So we’ll generally take over the crime scene, and there’s usually a smooth transition.”

The Secret Service confirmed in its statement that the involved agents have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation — standard protocol. The FBI, Secret Service, and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are all jointly investigating the incident, including the man’s background, potential motive, and the use of force.

Bongino said questions remain about how exactly the suspect got as close as he did. The north side of the property isn’t easy terrain to breach undetected. “Was there a backpack involved? Was there some security footage, some security cameras that may have been following this guy sooner?” he asked. “That’s the kind of stuff we’re gonna find out as the fact pattern starts to emerge.”

Deputies: Victim Stabs Intruder in Self-Defense During Early Morning Home Invasion

Two men were arrested after Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies say they forced their way into a residence and attacked the occupant, before fleeing after one was stabbed.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office booking report, Kobi Issiah Torrealba Ruiz, 18, of Lauderhill, and Christian Micheal Chirino, 38, of Lauderhill, were arrested on February 14. Deputies say they responded to a reported home invasion at a Tamarac residence at approximately 5:00 a.m., in which the victim told deputies the men forced their way into his home while looking for his nephew.

Investigators say that after the victim asked the two men to leave, they both allegedly struck him multiple times. During the altercation, the victim stabbed Chirino in what authorities described as self-defense.

The affidavit states that both suspects fled the scene in a silver Nissan Altima. Deputies later located the vehicle in Lauderhill and detained both men. Chirino was observed with a stab wound consistent with the victim’s account and was treated at the scene by Lauderhill Fire Rescue.

The victim positively identified both suspects during a show-up, according to the report.

Both Torrealba Ruiz and Chirino were arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail.

Homeowner shoots suspect in Nassauville burglary attempt

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — An attempted home burglary in Nassau County turned into a shooting Wednesday night.

“If you break into somebody’s home, you should beg to get shot. And that’s exactly what happened,” said Sheriff Bill Leepe, with the Nassau County Sheriffs office.

The sheriff’s office said the shooting was in self-defense. Investigators [say] 18-year-old Anson Shawn Drew and a juvenile broke into a home on Clearwater Road in Nassauville. The report states the suspect pointed a flashlight at the homeowner, who then shot his revolver at the suspect in fear for his life.

The juvenile suspect is recovering at the hospital and is in stable condition after being shot in his lower back. Sheriffs office says both suspects tried to flee on foot after the shooting. The report states Drew left one of his shoes behind when he ran off. He was later arrested at his home.

“Individuals said they liked to break into vacant homes to smoke weed. This time, they broke into their own homes,” said Sheriff Leepe.

The sheriff’s office said the suspects didn’t have any marijuana on this occasion.

This wasn’t the first time the victim’s house had been broken into, as sheriffs say the house was burglarized about a month earlier, and he did have some firearms stolen.

Drew is in Nassau County jail on a bond of more than 10 thousand dollars, and the juvenile suspect will be charged pending a warrant for his arrest.

Deadly Stockton Flea Market shooting was an act of self-defense during robbery, police say

shooting at the Stockton Flea Market earlier this month that left two men dead and a woman wounded has been ruled a case of self-defense during a robbery, Stockton police said on Tuesday.

Stockton police said Wednesday that employees at the business involved are not currently being charged, police said.

Two men were killed and a woman injured when gunfire broke out during the Jan. 19 shooting. Both of those who died were involved in the robbery, police said. Police did not have more information to share about the woman who was wounded.

KCRA 3 previously spoke to Salvador Cervantes, a longtime resident and jewelry business owner at the flea market, who recounted the shooting.

He said his son had traded gunfire with one of those involved.

“This individual came, was walking out of my booth with the gun pointing, and I threw myself on the floor when I saw him,” he said. “There was an exchange of fire between my son and them. My son is the one who saved my life for the second time, so I’m pretty much blessed that he was around again for the second time.”

In 2012, Cervantes’ father was shot and killed while selling jewelry at the same flea market.

Stockton police said their investigation is ongoing.

Bradenton man shoots kidnapper dead for trying to abduct his wife, detectives say

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A Bradenton man fended off a kidnapper who tried to abduct his wife on New Year’s Day, deputies said.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Nicholas Palomo, a 36-year-old felon who had previously gone to prison for kidnapping and other crimes, attempted to abduct a woman who was walking her dog in the area of 18th Place East in Bradenton.

The woman managed to escape Palomo by running from his car and made it to her home and warned her husband about what happened.

Detectives said the husband went outside and confronted Palomo who behaved “in a threatening manner” toward the couple. When Palomo began approaching the victim’s husband, the husband shot him a single time in the driveway.

The sheriff’s office said the whole ordeal occurred within a matter of minutes.

Deputies responded to the shooting at 12:27 a.m., and despite efforts to save him, Palomo died at the scene.

After collecting further evidence in the shooting, investigators determined that Palomo did not know the couple, classifying the shooting as a “random incident.”

Detectives also found that Palomo previously caused a disturbance at a Circle K before the shooting. It is believed he may have been under the influence of narcotics.

An autopsy found Palomo died of a single gunshot to the chest, and toxicology testing is being done to determine what drugs were in his system at the time.

As such, the State Attorney’s Office classified the shooting as self-defense, justifying the homeowner’s actions.

Police identify alleged intruder shot, killed by Buckeye homeowner

BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — Authorities have identified the man who police say was shot and killed while attempting to break into a Buckeye home late Sunday.

In an update on Monday afternoon, police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Michael Diaz.

Just before 9 p.m., police responded to a home on Desert Bloom Street, near Yuma and Watson roads, on reports of shots fired, according to the Buckeye Police Department.

Officers arrived and discovered Diaz had been shot multiple times inside the home. He died at the scene, authorities said.

Details are extremely limited, but Buckeye police confirmed a man is dead after being shot Sunday night.
Detectives say a mother and her two adult children were inside the home when they heard banging on the door.

A woman answered the door, and Diaz reportedly tried to force his way inside. Police say the woman’s son grabbed a handgun and shot the intruder after he broke through the security door and stepped inside.

Police say the family did not know the intruder. No family members were injured during the break-in.

“I feel bad for the family that had to endure this, and I feel bad for someone who didn’t take the responsibility of realizing you don’t go into people’s homes,” said CeCe Lopez.

Lopez and her husband, Enrique, live two doors down from the house where the break-in happened. They say a man wearing a hoodie knocked on their door Friday night.

CeCe said she was on the phone and did not answer. Enrique checked the doorbell camera and saw the man leaving. However, on Sunday night, the man came back and knocked on their door again.

“It was about the same time. Our dogs went crazy again,” said CeCe.

Enrique said he stepped outside, but the man was gone. He then ran to see where he might have gone.

“Then I heard four gunshots,” said Enrique.

They say it could’ve been them who shot the intruder if they had answered their door.

“What do you do? You know what I mean? You’re not just gonna let someone come into your home, and you’re certainly not going to let someone hurt my dogs,” said CeCe.

Howard Snader, a Senior Criminal Attorney for Attorneys for Freedom, said in this case, the homeowner who shot Diaz should be in the clear.

“This incident, as reported, appears to be a stereotypical textbook example of the Castle Doctrine, where you have an absolute right to protect yourself, your family from and intruder in your own residence,” he said.

He said if you’re in fear of being hurt or killed in your home, you can use lethal force. However, if you shoot someone outside of your house, like on the front porch, for example, a self-defense claim will be trickier.

“It gets into a really gray area, and you’re going to look at all the circumstances. So in Arizona, do you have the right to stand your ground? Absolutely. But that comes with risk,” said Snader.

Homeowner shoots intruder during attempted robbery in Redlands, police say

REDLANDS, Calif. (KABC) — A Redlands man was arrested late Thursday after police say he broke into a home, pointed a shotgun at the resident and was then shot by the homeowner.

The Redlands Police Department responded to a report of shots fired shortly before midnight on Jan. 15.

The homeowner arrived home and found the intruder inside. He armed himself with a handgun before confronting the intruder, who pointed a shotgun at the homeowner, according to police.

That’s when the homeowner shot the intruder and immediately exited the home to call police, officials said.

When officers arrived, they cleared the home and followed a blood trail that led to the back yard where they found the intruder suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Daniel Torres Carrion, had property from the home on his person. They also recovered the shotgun, which Torres had found inside the residence.

Torres was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was later discharged from the hospital and booked at West Valley Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681 ext. 1.

Winston-Salem man shot, killed; investigators determine self-defense

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the county’s first homicide of 2026, which deputies say has been ruled a justifiable act of self-defense.

Deputies responded to reports of shots fired around 11 p.m. Thursday at a home on Hartman Plaza Court. When they arrived, they found a man who’d been shot multiple times.

Investigators said the man was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. He has been identified as 54-year-old Floyd Leonard Denney of Winston-Salem.

After reviewing evidence, technology, and witness statements, and after consulting with the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office, investigators determined the shooting was a justifiable self-defense homicide.

“Our prayers and our thoughts are always with those involved in such a tragic incident,” Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said in a statement.
